to say it in Autocar's words : No matter how much those who want Porsches to stay naturally aspirated whine and stamp their feet, you can’t stop Progress  Smiley

Downsizing and compensating via turbocharging in pursuit of lower fuel comsumption and CO2 because of EU burocrat agendas in a "sports"car is not progress

if diesel engines would not only be more fuel efficient and torquey but also less polluting, would going diesel in sportcars also be progress?

Performance enhancing hybrid tech, thats progress for sportscars...

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

Hybrid is not progress. It is the marriage of reason between one too old technology and one too young. The problem is space and weight due to the dual systems. It will not become mainstream especially if fuel price stay as low as they are in the US. Full electric is the future, not sure why many here don't see it. TODAY you can buy a car with 300 miles range that can be charged in 40 minutes and has some of the best performance (if not THE best) in their segment. A car that 10 years ago people said could not be built. Where do you think we will be in another 10 or 20 year? My guess is we will be where combustion engine will be as relevant as carburetors are today...

Real world example: my colleague bought a uber specced out Cayenne Hybrid because he thought it was cool (over $130k). Then he drives it and realizes then engine comes on all the time when he thought it wouldn't. And then his first delivery reaction? "Why did they put the spare wheel in the rear cargo space  It takes away my trunk space" Smiley Then he drives the car and doesn't find in better than the regular Cayenne. And he might save some fuel but again he paid $130k for a Cayenne S so does it really matter? With retrospect he said it was a big mistake and he now drives a GL 63 AMG...

The 918 and LaFerrari for example beg to differ, and well as the next generation 992... it's precisely the ability to marriage effectively the two technologies that give something better than the sum of its parts what constitutes the progress,

What progress will come in 20 years NOBODY knows inspite many "couch nostradamus" out there of what will be, but that won't define what progress is now anyways, that will be progress then, and it will likely just build on the previous.

why not ? also in F1 is less fuel consumption with more torque and similar HP Progress. we're not talking noise here.... - it's like you would Claim Porsche is going backwards for changing 718&991 to Turbo - and you're mad because you have not been asked....Smiley

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

To each his own opinion. At least I tried to explain my position and there is a very high probability it will come true. The only real question is the timing. Hybrid is a temporary fix especially in its current form. Some cars might have a combustion "generator" to extend the range even further, but even that is in doubt with hydrogen and fuel cells.

Yea cause we all love for tbe pinnacle of motororacing to be fuel efficient most of all, who cares if they sound like 4-liter  diesel hatchbacks Smiley I think they should also be made of reciclable materials and run on solar enegrgy too Smiley

I didn't say Porsche is going backwards for turbocharging the 991, turbocharging is a big part of the 911 and there should always be turbocharged models, but turbocharged for extreme power and performance like the 911 Turbo or GT2. What is backwards is to eliminate all the n/a versions (GT3 will be next) for fuel efficient turbocharged version, and its a decicion we all know Porsche did not take for themeselves because its progress, its because they were forced to by strickter and strickter EU legistation on fuel efficiency and CO2. Porsche made a heck fo a job with what the were forced to do, but its not better than if they could have still gone n/a in those models in which the n/a engine is a better choice.

Same here. Not really interested in watching races anymore, I am bored (age thing?). In the past, it was fun watching this stuff with friends but now? Not interested anymore. Not even F1. I enjoy spending time with the family much more. Smiley

Formula E race? Same thing, not interested anymore. I would probably watch it once for the novelty factor but... Smiley

The GT3 RS is a very special car and has real street presence. I can understand where you're coming from (458) and why you or your wife would prefer a Ferrari but I think you did the right thing, unless you were going for that 458 Speciale you were thinking about. If you don't like the GT3 RS, you can still sell it...maybe (if your contract doesn't have that 6 months period paragraph).

What would be the alternative? Well, the F12tdf is difficult to get but what about the F12? The F12 is a fantastic car, I don't think you can go wrong with it.

Its a hell of a car Peter, the best 911 on the line up IMO, looking forward to your impressions when you get it. The only problem may be the compromises this model makes in usability, comfort and versatility that you will have to decide if you can live with  for the type of use you will give it (trips for ex?).

That may be the only problem because everything else how could you not fall in love with. My only suggestion is to start now scoring some brownie points with the wife to cash in at delivery day  Smiley

Just came back from the Porsche Ice training in Levi - Finland.  I was very surprised to find all those 991 GT3 RS parked in the snow whilst the other less special Porsches parked in the garage. I did not take a picture but saw also the 918 Spyder (Weissach ed.) being prepared for the event that will take place next week . thumb_IMG_3209_1024.jpg

Whoopsy - when talking to the instructors in the evening (at the bar with a drink Smiley)   they mentioned they were  quite stressed about this event as they were told not to put a single dent on the 918s !  The tracks were in fantastic conditions (it has been snowing a lot in the last three weeks in Levi). I think you are in for a treat. Please post pictures .

    Re: 991 GT3 RS

I've done Camp 4s twice and Ice Force once, at Rovaniemi and Levi, it's the Ultimate Man vacation.  Driving all day, eating and drinking good food and great company.  There are two things that are a must while there, Ice Go Karting outdoors and going for a Husky Sleigh ride through the forrest.  The Snowmobile trip is also fun, but if you do that regularly where you live then not the greatest thrill.
