I think RC already hinted awhile ago that the motor could be similar to dry-sump 991 GT3 RS with turbos added...

    Well... Smiley

Engine will be closer to next 992 Turbo though but in principle, you are not wrong.

PDK should be interesting and there will be a "hint" of hybrid tech (don't even ask, I don't have a clue, just passing on what I heard...) but the GT2 RS is not a raw track car but a very powerful limited edition (yes but not strictly limited Smiley) 991 and very likely the last GT model of the 991 model group.

    No manual on this one...

A high revving turbo engine a la McLaren ? This is completely at odds with Porsche's philosophy so far on its street turbo engines, they have all been about big fat torque curves and max 6750 red limit - very confusing, but interesting !

That wasn't so much a question of philosophy as one of having to make do with what was available: flat six engines with relatively large individual cylinder displacements.
A different philosophy was followed when the opportunity arose to develop a 1.5l V6 turbo engine starting with a blank sheet of paper. It could rev to over 11,000 rpm back in the 1980s.    Smiley

It seems quite difficult to produce a turbo motor which will produce 750NM at 2000rpm and still 600NM by 8000rom (640hp) and Porsche have always concentrated on the lower end of the rev range which has always given their turbo cars enormous road performance.

9ff turbocharges 997 GT3 engines and produces huge power at ~8000rpm but because of the turbo sizing needed and thermal constraints they are pretty gutless under 5000rpm.

For Porsche to follow their road turbo engine philosophy (yes I think it has been one) of bringing the max torque on very low in the rev range and maintaining a high degree of it (80% in above example) at high (8000+) revs is technically very difficult because of turbo sizing and thermal problems (heat generated by variable geometry turbo needed for such a feat with high boost required all the way up the rev band)

You see what I am getting at, there is definitely a conflict (even with todays advancements) unless they start using different sized sequential blowers like on the 959 ?

RC, lets hope the hybrid you heard about is some kind of electric support for the turbochargers enabling some larger ones without to much lag. And being a GT car- no 4WD please.

    olli:

I think RC is absolutely right, the 9A1 based turbo engine is more or less maxed out at its current power level, so it is likely to be either a variant of the new 9A2 or a new development to be used in the 992 generation (and a basis for the RSR and future turbo-charged GT models a la GT2/RS).

As we know, Porsche need to come up with a homologation model for the 2017 GTE car. There was some talk (from very qualified sources) that the 2017 car would be mid-engine. However, since then there has been a few changes in direction. At this point , I think it may be safer to assume that the 2017 GTE car (currently under development) will be based on a 911 rather than the rumored (strongly) mid-engine platform. If this is true, I think Porsche are making a mistake (given the competition) but time will tell.

If the new GTE car is in fact based on the 911, then it would not surprise me that this new GT2 would serve as the homologation car. If this is the case, then one can expect turbo, but no hybrid. (Hybrid technology is not allowed in GTE cars ...for the time being). The timing of this car coincides with the 2017 GTE car, and the "limited" production does as well.

    Lets see.

Based on the rumor posted by RC, if this car is no longer a raw track car, why'd they slap a 2 or maybe an RS badge ? The GT2 was always about precision, raw feeling and providing extra downforce + high-tech lightweight engineering.

Just call it a Turbo S2 (Big Mac) and be done with it Smiley

Yeah, no airbags, I am sure Porsche would street certify such a car.

Looking at the current legal trouble they seem to have with the Carrera GT, you can forget about this stuff (and I'm not even talking airbags here).
