To me the 997 GT3 RS 4.0l is far more special than the 991 GT3 RS. None of the latest incarnations of the GT4, GT3 or GT3 RS feels "special" in this sense. The GT3 and RS the least, since they are neither the first, nor the last. Once the next generation is out both will be surpassed. The GT4 is not special enough to be special  but it is the first.

The 997 GT3 RS 4.0l is a very different machine. The last of an era. I doubt we will ever see anything like it.

The jury is still out on the R. It could be special like the 997 GT3 RS 4.0l or it is a "SportClassic with GT3" engine. I lean towards the latter for now.

You are wrong. The 911 R is basically a GT3 without rear wing.

The SportClassic had nothing to do with the Porsche GT models, it was basically a normal 997 Carrera GTS with a few special ed (design) goodies.

    Big difference!

Which department is responsible for the R?

Actually, it is a combined project with the involvement of Porsche Motorsport but yes, Porsche Exclusive certainly had nothing to do with it this time. The entire tech of the 911 R comes mainly from the GT3, so this is no Sport Classic rip-off, not by a long shot.

The manual gearbox is the single feature which so far really sticks out. The R is not going to be special because there is no rear wing and has Exclusive Dept seat inlays.

    Re: 911 R Thread Closed

Indeed the R looks like a special car. But they didn't go far enough for the rumored price. And now they will make 911 of them?

PDK should be an option. And rear seats, maybe removable or as an option. All for less than $160k. Personally to make it really special I would also have chopped the roof and make it $250k. And real weight savings, not what is rumored...

The 991 GT3 engine is a lot cheaper to produce than the 997 GT3 Mezger,  I feel this is an important factor in why the 911R gets the 991 GT3 motor, it doesn't cost that much more than the regular 9A1 Dfi motor. Putting a Mezger GT3 in the 007 sport classic would have added what ? 20K + to the production cost and unnecessary particularly as Porsche likes profit margin so much Smiley

It would have been a much greater deal if the sport classic had got the Mezger making the car much more special, it is interesting to muse whether or not this would have affected the current high resale values at all - my guess is probably not much, collectors like rarity, little else.
