Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

I just tried out the new Carrera S for curiosity.. I have to say it's a supremely good daily driver - quiet and refined, the PDK is better, and the torque throughout the rev range makes it very easy to drive.  I felt the steering had more feedback than before and the overall feeling of the drive was very positive.

    Now the downsides..

The car had PSE, and that did improve the sound, but I got the impression that though the car is loud from the outside, you don't get much of that to enjoy from the inside.  Even with the window open it seemed pretty muted.  It would be better if somehow some of the noise just got transmitted to the cabin instead (real noise, not through the stereo).

The gearing was also very tall, and the PDK in normal mode is even more dull than before.. 60km/h at 1000rpm in 7th is just daft IMO.  Sure it's emissions-tastic of course.

Would I buy one?  If I had to commute, maybe.  I think it would quickly get boring to drive unless you had access to somewhere you could properly open it up without getting chucked in prison.

I drove back in my GT3 and it was plain how much more exciting a car can be with a bit of drama from the engine.  I'd really miss that engine.

Maybe in manual it would bring back some drama and at least something to do and play with ?

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Maybe - depends if the ratios are the same as the PDK 'box.. if so, then they're really long and you wouldn't get to change gear much anyway.  The GT3 is exciting, yet PDK -  I think that's because the ratios are short and you can spin the engine up and down a bit and change often.  I don't think a manual with gears that long would improve things much.

Am I the only one who doesn't want a loud car on the inside with the windows up? Going from a rental Ford Fusion and Hyundai Santa Fe back to the 12C was like being at a rock concert. I actually got pretty annoyed by how loud it was.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

I'd like it both ways indecision The GT3 gets a bit wearing on a long trips - when just cruising on the motorway it would be nice if I could relax and listen to music, but when pushing a bit I want to hear an exciting soundtrack from the drivetrain too.

Thats what the PSE button is for, when you don't want to hear it you can turn it off. The problem is that when you actually want to hear the sound, you still don't hear it enough even with the button on.

I bumped into my dealer today in town . He was driving a 991.2 Carrera S with sport exhaust . I asked him if he is happy with the noise . He jus told me to listen and drove off . I could hear the car 300 m away . The new Carrera is not mute , at all !

Agree with both of you. Yes, sound (with PSE) is different for sure then 991.1 Carrera GTS. But, bad or mute? For sure not, IMHO.

This is what I said in my review, it is a pretty good sound for a turbo charged car, better than expected but apparently many people, incl. some car journalists, don't seem to agree. I don't understand why because they cannot really hear something else than we do, can they? Smiley Maybe they forgot to turn on the PSE? Smiley Smiley

It may be a matter of what each one is comparing it to. If you compare it to the 911 turbo, it sounds very good since this one is also turbocharged, but if you compare it to the previous atmospheric engine then logically it's a step back regarding sound.

Smiley Comparing the 991.2 PSE to the 991.1 GTS is indeed pointless but for a turbo charged car, it sounds amazing in my opinion, especially when I compare it to the 991.1 Turbo S.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

Wonder if its due to the difference in engine characteristics of the small 3.0L that "allows" for better or less muffled sound than in the bigger 991 Turbo engine? because oitherwise I don't see why they could not have done the same with the 991.2Turbo which sounds like a sewing machine

According to what I heard, the VTG chargers are to blame. There is a certain "on-off effect" which cannot be bypassed with the proper adjustment for legal emissions and sound limitations. The next Turbo generation won't have this issue anymore but I'm not sure it will sound much better than the current one since new noise emissions limitations will be very likely in effect by that time. Maybe Porsche surprises us...

I believe it is due to the lack of a waste gate on the vtg turbos. This makes the plumbing very different from conventional turbos.

I think I just don't want engine noise when I'm cruising around. I'd actually rather have it dead silent when I'm on the highway or just wind noise. Can't stand drone.

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

I think Porsche kind of made the transition to EU imposed turbocharged engines a bit more difficult on themesleves by making the 991.1GTS, since it made for a tougher measuring stick to compare the 991.2 to as opposed to the regular 991.1S, All the disadvantages of the new turbo engine that some people may pick at were made even more evident having a 991.1GTS to compare it to, instead of a 991.1S. That said, all in all, I think Porsche made a incredible job at minimising the disadvantages of being forced to go turbo on the Carrera models. Another win for Porsche engineering.

BTW, an acquaintance of mine just recieved his new 991.2 C4S... whe  I saw the picture sent to me I saw he didn't get the PSE! Smiley if only I would have know he didn't spec it I could of informed him a bit better on the issue, I though it was a given you have to get PSE on the 991.2... anyway, I believe the PSE in not retrofitable on the 991.2 ether, so I don't think I'm going to mention it now, but if he happens to listen to my car he is going to ask about the huge sound difference.. SmileySmiley

Re: Porsche 991.2 Carrera S (Facelift) - Short Driving Report

IMO Porsche should now offer the PSE as standard equipment on the Carrera, the standard exhaust sound now is unacceptable, and Porsche should not be trying to make a single dime from the situation of switching to turbocharging and removing any option of an atmospheric and everybody being forced to get the PSE now. To them the PSE costs the same as the standard to make, and those owners that want a quieter experience can always leave it turned off. Not to mention that when they sell it, they will be glad they have the PSE since the resale value will likely be affected if it doesn't have it.

Speaking of brakes: It's about time Porsche offered matching colors for the PCCB. The yellow (which I like) clashes with some colors (e.g. Orange) and limits interior color choices if one does not want too many colors (i.e. clown car) on the car.

+1.. it's ridiculous that colour combinations affect which options people choose.  I wanted a red GT3 but didn't even consider the PCCBs even though I bought them on my last car and loved them - mostly due to the colour clash..  It ought to be an Exclusive option at least.

Probably, but would be expensive and people don't like cars that have been messed about with here.. Would make it difficult to sell.
