    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

    DaveGordon:

Anyone know if the gearbox/linkage in the Spyder is the same as in the GT4? The 'box in the GT4 seemed to me to be waaay better than the standard models.

Probably achieved by using a "short-shift" lever, as in all 911 and Boxster variants since 996. Easily achieved by altering the kinematics at the gear-lever end of the linkage cables, and could also be retrofitted to other models in the range at relatively reasonable cost.

I presume it's the same  since testers of the two cars say the 2nd gear seems too long. So probably same gearing.

I can already testify that (after only 1200km of running in) the box is easy handling. The alcantara knob is very pleasant in the hand and it really shifts quick and natural. The car is really focussed on driving pleasure... meaning: feel the vibes, hear the sound , enjoy the wheel and gearlever...

It's a little stunning car and worth every € :-)

Only negative thing for me: i have to wwork too much, so i can't drive enough and am waiting desperately to reach 1500km to unleash the revs...

I was thinking of the shifter action mostly - afaik the ratios are the same in all manual Boxsters/Caymans. I had a short-shift option in my 987.2 but iirc this wasn't offered as an option on 981. I just temember the shift action being superb on the GT4 and wondered if it was the same on the Spyder.

Congrats to you new Spyder owners anyway - can't help feeling a bit jealous kiss

Sure, it's the shortshifter of the GT4

Short-shifter in my 987.1 S felt and sounded more mechanical compared to the 981 Spyder, but was a bit notchy at cold temps, which is not so anymore in the 981 Spyder (and certainly in the GT4 also - afaik it's the same gearbox as in the Spyder).

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

Finally, after waiting more than 6 months, I proudly contribute my 2 cents too SmileySmiley, picked it up today. And I honestly must admit, the car looks boring and stupid in the pictures, but in reality, it's one of the sexiest cars Porsche ever made. It really looks stunning for real! Smiley

Although, I've got already a question for the other Spyder/Boxster owners: my oil temp showed already 113°C driving in 6th gear constantly at a speed of 90-100km/h with an outdoor average of 6-7°C. When accelerating in tunnels, it really smelled burnt, oil, gasoline not 100% sure?!?

I remembered an average oil temp of 98-102°C in those conditions would be normal, wouldn't it?
Yes I'm properly breaking in the car, RPM with a max. of 4000, the car made 350 km by now. Otherwise in those rainy conditions everything felt, well fantastic... Smiley

Many congrats, 80924 Smiley Nothing to worry about with the oil temp - normal for the DFI engine. 6 months is nothing - I had to wait 9 months. After such a long wait time some customers may even realise that they would have been better off ordering a Macan rather than a two seater Smiley

Congrats Beltar and PJ! They just look so beautiful no matter which colour it is. Mine isn't getting built till March and won't get here till June so I'm jealous! To make matters worse my friend here just picked up one of the first ones in Australia and it looks great in rhodium! Re: Boxster Spyder News?

981 Spyder first impressions after 615 km

I must admit I did only drive whilst it was raining. So it's not all too conclusive, I did drive rather "slowly" anyway still in break in mode... smiley

But, what I found out so far:
    cons:
    - steering lacks huge in feedback, when not driving to the limit (to the limit, maybe it will be worse), the steering feeling is even worse than I anticipated, so for me personally it's a huge setback really! that's a huge disappointment angryheart

    - the exterior rear view mirrors are wet all the time during rain, maybe the heat function will help, didn't try it yet.

    - So far the Bose system didn't impress me, when using mp3 through USB (hold on before you yell at meblush, this works better in BMW's with the Harman Kardon system for example), but I have to further analyze and configure, so I'm not 100% sure yet.

    - missing of a "manual" handbrake

    pros:
    - 918 seats, just perfect, so driving ergonomic are AAA+
    - steering very precise and extreme direct (but like listed above, impressive lack of feedback!!)
    - all around quality and feeling inside is rather good, a clear improvement over 996, 987...
    - stunning look all around
    - huge improvement in brake pedal feel and braking performance, compared to a 987 for example
    - engine noise and exhaust "sound" = AAA+ !!!!!!! blush

So far the long gear ratio didn't bother me, but that could possibly be an issue later, when I'll drive it like I stole it! smileysmileyangry

Before you shoot me, because of the cons: 3 of the listed cons, could probably be resolved, but the missing "real" handbrake just feels and seems stupid to me, sorry mail

My conclusion, almost all the extreme measures to safe fuel on these sports cars, like electronic power steering, and so on, seem real "bullshit" to me sorry angry, and Porsche should save weight, that would help too...

Looking forward to hear your first impressions!

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

To pick in on taughts of 80924:

The lack of a normal parking break bothers me too, and the handling of the knob is not natural to me.

I'm used to "pull" the handbreak, now you have to push to activate en pull to deactivate...Smiley

Also, the bose is pretty useless because above 140km/h you only hear the engine... My wife is not happy with that...

Exhaust sound is SUPER to me, but mss likes to listen to nice music on the motorway...

you need to have at least 10cm of space between your seat backs and the rear speakers to make BOSE sound better

Nice review - just - it would be useful to know what car you are comparing steering feel / feedback to, as the electric assist steering has already been around 4 years since the 991 changes.  If you are comparing to 997 or older, yes, all modern Porsches will feel quite different through the wheel.

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

@4trac: Yes, sorry I meant compared to: 993, 996, 997 and 987. But I have the feeling that even the electronic power steering from BMW gives more feedback, but I could tell for sure when I will have done some more miles...

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

I have both electric steerings, in the BMW 430d and in the Boxster.

The BMW steering is by far the worst of all BMWs I have driven before and a lot more feelingless than the Boxster steering.

The 997 steering had more feeling, but was also a lot more uncomfortable.
For me the boxster steering is a good compromize and the Spyder steering should be better than the Boxster steering.

At the beginning the BMW steering was more worse than now. After calibration 6 month ago it  get a little bit better and last week my tire shop made an alignement of the wheels. All wheels were out of range.
Noticable better now, but still not good.

The steering looks more than ok to me. It's just nice imo.

The most incovenient part of the spyder in daily use is the lack of parkdistance control. I'm still uncomfortable using the rearview cam.

On a more serious note, it is surprising that such a test has not been done yet. I hope one of the dealers around here get a Spyder soon. I would love to try it (...and to compare of course Smiley)
