    RC:

I like the 718 look better but I'm still not a fan of that rear spoiler/wing. It looks too playful, too...how to put it...japanese. angry

You've seen it before on the Mitsubishi starion and eclipse models. Cheap styling trick. Porsche needs to up their game, all sorts of cheap looking styling tricks are being used across their entire model range.  4cyl motors, decals, black plastic trim strips  is this 1984 at Porsche again?

    Re: 718 Boxster

I loved 1984. I had a couple of those. Wish I still had them.

Of course the new car will sell because it is the latest and greatest.

    Re: 718 Boxster

What was wrong with 1984? One Porsche side view mirror from that era had way more engineering and quality materials (and cost) in it than 15 of today's.

The mirrors, yes. Great seats, yes. Instruments, water pumps, electrics, body quality No. But very comfortable on a long trip,

If you want a new front engine sports car at 718 prices, check out the new shrunken 2017 camaro zl 1 . 640hp, 640 ft lbs torque. Huge brakes, 6spd manual or a .......10 speed rapid fire automatic.

    Re: 718 Boxster

For similar money also from GM, I think I'd prefer new Vette Grand Sport over ZL1.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Not a fan of Corvettes. Even the latest one feels kind of structurally flimsy, not the frame but the body. If it was a unibody made with metal it would be legit. Go drive one you will understand. A 71 lotus elan feels tighter.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I worked for GM on the Active Suspension Corvette from '85 to '88, when GM owned Lotus Cars and Hughes Aircraft. Talk of poor structural design... I still can't bring myself to consider a GM product.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Maybe my recommendation was too hasty.  I've never owned a Vette, but have driven many.  The most valuable one I've driven is a 1967 Coupe with 427 CID/435HP with 4-speed and sidepipes.  One of the worst driving cars ever (but looks and sounds great)...

I find the newer ones (up to C6 - haven't tried C7 yet) to be far better to drive...

    Re: 718 Boxster

For the same money I would always get the Vette. The Vette is another league than the 718. The Vette is a myth, a car like the 911 which stands for itself. And that powerful V8 is reason enough taking it.

Since the little Porsche is now equipped with a 4-cylinder it lost a complete level and competes now against Z4, MX-5, Audi-TT, etc. Before it was a luxury roadster, now it moved towards the "every-mans" car. For me it misses at least 2 cylinder to be taken serious.

Well, interesting opinion, never thought about that and, I completely disagree...also this 718 in whatever format I would go to a track with, not with a Z4 (and I am a Beamer...) and not with one of the other cars you mentioned. I still find it  hard to believe that this cylinder down-sizing is an issue, however, I may be biased as I started Porsche life with a 944...

    +1

I don't quite see what the fuss is about. It is still the very same Boxster as before, two cylinders less, more power, much more performance.

True that would be even worse Smiley Even if no VW in line four sounds like a diesel engine with the big ends knackered. Smiley

Yeah, I think it's a good amount of performance for the money (and Cayman will be even better), but it is not very emotionally exciting.

Actually, standard xenon cannons look better than these.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Black is the least offensive colour so far.

    Re: 718 Boxster

They need a delete option for the rear porsche script. The car looks good but the wheels look like cheap British ones from the 70s.

    Re: 718 Boxster

This is such a let down enlightened. Think the move from 6 to 4 cylinder is much bigger disappointment than the introduction of air cooling and electrical steering. Would have been better to move from 6 cylinder directly to EV than this...

    Re: 718 Boxster

So far every 718 and 991.2  video review has commented negatively about the way they deliver power and the  poor sound. They aren't slower, but the engines seem really strangled. I wanted to really like the 718 but it's tragically over priced with 4 cyl and sounds like a Subaru Forrester.

Porsche is killing its love story with these cars. No romantic sound will mean no romantic memories.  Maybe it's time they ditch the flat engines and go to a v8. If Ford and GM can build good sounding engines why can't Porsche or BMW.

I don't know if this is true. At least not in markets where Porsche brand is well developed. I think most buyers would expect a Porsche to sound good. It's part of buying a Porsche. Maybe it would be OK in markets such as China where he brand means prestige but customers have very little experience with these cars. We will see. I personally expect sales of the 718s to go down.

    Re: 718 Boxster

You know ironically, trying to make a turbo feel n/a might be the problem.  Turbos can be very very exciting, so why not let the car have some of its own turbo character (slight lag and an incredible rush once boost comes in)?  Because Turbo will never replicate n/a anyway.

Classic case is F40 Ferrari.  No one ever complains about it being a turbo.
