    OFFICIAL: 718 Boxster (2016)

20 years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is restructuring its mid-engine roadsters. The designation for the new generation of models is 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S. The two-seat convertibles are now more powerful yet more fuel efficient. With them, Porsche continues the tradition of the four-cylinder flat engines that were used in the Porsche 718 mid-engine sports cars that won numerous races back in the 1950s and 1960s, among them being the legendary Targa Florio and Le Mans.

The centrepiece of the new model series is the newly developed four-cylinder flat engine with turbocharging. The 718 Boxster develops 220 kW (300 hp) of power from two litres of engine displacement, while the 718 Boxster S attains 257 kW (350 hp) from 2.5 litres of displacement. In the S-model, Porsche also uses a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. In fact Porsche is now the only manufacturer to offer VTG technology in production cars with petrol-driven engines, both in the 911 Turbo and in the 718 Boxster S. Impressive here are the considerable power gain of 26 kW (35 hp) compared to the previous Boxster models and the efficiency of the new turbo engines. The new 718 Boxster models have fuel economy improvements of up to 13 per cent.

The completely new chassis tuning and stronger brakes provide for passionate and sporty driving pleasure. The design of the new model line was also comprehensively advanced. The vehicle was completely revised except for the luggage compartment lids, the windscreen and the convertible top. Inside, a newly designed dash panel frames the cockpit. In addition, the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a state-of-the-art touchscreen is included as standard. The navigation module is available as an option.

Efficient turbo power from four cylinders
The launch of the new 718 Boxster generation represents the first time since the late 1960s that Porsche is again implementing sports cars with four-cylinder flat engines. Turbocharging significantly boosts torque. The two-litre engine of the 718 Boxster has a maximum torque of 380 Newton metres (gain of 100 Newton metres), which is available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The 2.5-litre engine of the 718 Boxster S even attains 420 Newton metres (60 Newton metres more) over a speed range from 1,900 rpm to 4,500 rpm.

Thus, the new 718 Boxster models sprint even faster. The 718 Boxster – with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package – sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds (0.8 seconds faster). The 718 Boxster S with the same equipment completes this discipline in 4.2 seconds (0.6 seconds faster). The top speed of the 718 Boxster is 275 km/h, and the 718 Boxster S has a top speed of 285 km/h.

The Porsche turbo concept is boosting driving performance while improving fuel economy. In the 718 Boxster, the four-cylinder flat engine with PDK has a NEDC fuel consumption figure of 6.9 l/100 km (1.0 l/100 km less). In the 718 Boxster S, the 2.5-litre turbo flat engine with PDK consumes just 7.3 l/100 km (0.9 l/100 km less).

The 718 models come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), which now features fuel-saving virtual gears, is available as an option.

    New design emphasises sharpened profile
The 718 model line can be made out at first glance. The front end of the new roadster exhibits a much more sculptural form. The front has a wider and more masculine appearance. The much larger cooling air intakes at the front are a distinct exterior expression of the new turbo engine concept. The front end of the 718 Boxster is rounded out by the new design of the bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available as a new option.
From a side view, identifying features of the new model line include new, independently styled wings and side sills. Larger air inlet panels with two fins emphasise the car's dynamic look. The doors are now designed without door handle recess covers. New 19-inch wheels are standard on the 718 Boxster S. 20-inch diameter wheels are available as an option.

The redesigned rear body of the 718 Boxster has a much wider look – especially due to the accent strip with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights. The entirely redeveloped tail lights are distinguished by their three-dimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights.

Sportier tuning of chassis for greater agility
In its driving dynamics, the new roadster follows in the tracks of the original 718. The car's completely retuned chassis enhances cornering performance. The electromechanical steering system is configured to be ten per cent more direct. This makes the 718 Boxster even more agile and easier to steer, both on circuit tracks and in everyday traffic.

Minus ten and minus 20: Porsche Active Suspension Management
Available at extra charge for the roadsters is Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with a ten millimetre lower ride height. For the first time, the PASM sport chassis with a 20 millimetre lower ride height is available as an option for the 718 Boxster S. The active chassis, which has also been retuned, offers an even broader spread between long-distance touring comfort and dynamic sporty stiffness.

Extensive Sport Chrono Package for dynamic driving experience
As in the 911, the optional Sport Chrono Package now comprises the Individual programme in addition to the three settings Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. In sports cars with PDK, the Sport Response Button has been added, which is located at the middle of the driving programme switch. Inspired by car racing, it enables the driver to configure the responsiveness of the engine and the PDK to be very direct.

Interior has new Porsche Communication Management as standard
Awaiting the driver in the cockpit of the 718 Boxster is the familiar Porsche interior environment, now upgraded with new elements such as the instrument panel. Another central element of the new interior layout is the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) unit with mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces and the Sound Package Plus with 110 watts of audio power. The PCM can be extended with optional modules to thoroughly adapt it to personal requirements. For instance, the navigation module with voice control is available, which makes it easy to input driving destinations. In addition, the Connect Plus module is available as an extension of the navigation module; it provides extended online services.

The market launch of the new mid-engine sports car begins on April 30 in Europe. 718 Boxster pricing starts at 53,646 euros in Germany, and the 718 Boxster S from 66,141 euros, each with country-specific features and including VAT.

    Re: 718 Boxster

    Holy moley

    718 Boxster starts at £41,739 - up £2k over 981
    718 Boxster S starts at £50,695 - nearly £3k on 981.

With 'spec' the Boxster S will easily be a £63k car.

Not sure I'm in love with the styling. Looks a bit BMW Z8 to me. Think the 'Porsche' logo on the moving rear spoiler is a bit gimmicky.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I think it's very nice, but sad to see price increase.  Guess Cayman models will stay about same prices or even small discount as 6 cyl models (to be priced under Boxster).

They also took a jab at me - new Boxster S is quicker to 100 kph by 0.2 sec than GT4 (and Spyder by 0.3 sec) Smiley

I would seriously consider a base 718 Cayman with manual and almost no options (just over $50k) for Euro Delivery and Scuderia (maybe cheaper than renting road car and race car for a month)

Look good, but how cool would it have been if the black strip with the porsche lettering would've been an integrated stop light and just lit up with the break as a long light bar in the back

    Exactly what I would imagine.

100 Nm increased torque over the old 2.7 engine is huge !!

PCM (without Nav), sound package, mobile integration and Bi-Xenon now standard.
Price increase is nearly none when you consider that.

The current interior vents look better IMO.  Styling almost looks more 987-like in a few ways.

    Can't argue with torque.

Subaru sound? Ouch .  For a lot of money there should be a lot of happy sounds. Maybe they should have hired Italian sound engineers.

NA or Turbo 6 for GTS?

I think they are equating 718 with Flat-4.  If they have a Flat-6 model, they'll drop the 718 from that model's name, IMO...

Not in the Boxster market, but got to admit Porsche is--admirably i think--taking some exciting styling risks.  Coming  from racing cues...

    Re: 718 Boxster

Ouch...I'm not sure if I like it...that PORSCHE lettering in the back became more ugly. The shape of tail lights looks very nice, but tinted tail lights look soo dated, aka racer Civic, imho :( Front looks less aggressive than on current model. Anyway, need to see it in flesh for more objective verdict.

    Re: 718 Boxster

OMG the 996 front-lights are back yes

    Re: 718 Boxster

Front styling improved, rear styling worse (looks more Japanese and blingy to me) and I don't like the new dash vents. The sport chrono was much better integrated before, Porsche have gone back to the more traditional "wart". As for the engine it might be quicker, it might be more economical but it won't sound like my 6 cylinder GTS no matter how they tweak any sound symposer. The change to 4 cyl was for the benefit of the tree hugging brigade, not to make it a better sports car. Smiley

    Re: 718 Boxster

The more you look at the back the more it looks visually suspect. And who signed off on those interior vents? They look unattractive.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Though I have removed the lettering of my GTS completely, I find it actually a good idea how they included the PORSCHE lettering into the new rear design. At least, it seems that the lettering design guys were brought into the design project early this time and not close to the official introduction date. And, wow, the engine of the "S" - substantially more torque than the GTS. Nice !Smiley

Or  718  for 4 cylinders and 718-6 for the six. Like it was on the 914-6 .

    Re: 718 Boxster

At first glance the Porsche lettering looks super weird on all images I've seen today. Hope it'll look great in flesh.

What I really like are the new headlights.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I think the exterior is clumsy, and the interior is not much better. I don't like the new vents, and I think the the sport chrono is badly placed. The 'options' required to make the car outperform a GT4 (sports chrono, PDK etc) will put the price well north of £60k but the time leather is added as well as other 'essential features'. That's before we mention that it will be unsatisfying to drive hard as the engine rapidly runs out of torque at 4500 rpm...

Glad I have GT4 on the way and as far as I can see, I'll be keeping it for a long time.

    Re: 718 Boxster

    Smiley cool, thanks for sharing.

    Re: 718 Boxster

    Initial impressions:
The overall design seems more feminine than the outgoing model, especially from the 3/4 front view.
The front: a very clean look, but less aggressive than the outgoing model. Reminds me of the panamera facelift and I am not sure I like it. The misalignment of the running lights AGAIN is becoming an ongoing story and kind of insulting to the customers. The designer responsible for this whole charade should be fired instantly. mail
The rear: Did they decrease the size of the wheel fenders? Looks less impressive than the 981. The shape of the lights looks great, but as someone mentioned, the tinted aspect of it makes it look a bit cheap. The Porsche lettering... well, at least they got rid of the wing being integrated in the rear lights, but this solution... I think I'll have to get used to it.

The interior looks good to me, but as mentioned by others as well, the de-integrated the design of the vents... why? Seems to me that they were updating for the sake of updating, instead of updating in order to make it better.

All in all, the outgoing model had me hugely impressed and when it was introduced, I could see myself getting one at some point in my life. This new model puts me back in the camp of "meh, not really something I would consider"...

So, these are just initial impressions, based on looks alone, and I hope these impressions change over time, but I think it's not a good sign; good design immediately shows and keeps captivating the spectator.

    Re: 718 Boxster

There are only 9 colours available at launch yes  That is a as bad as the Macan when it was first released. Surely the Paint To Sample debacle with the GT3 RS, GT4 and Spyder have taught the marketing geniuses at Porsche that their customers are clamouring for more choice in terms of exterior colour. It's pretty ridiculous that a modern paint shop is so constrained on the variety of colours it can cope with. The interior colour choices are also pretty poor IMHO.

Interesting as well that it's possible to have the car badged as a 718 only. Is this possibly a move towards dropping the Boxster name tag over time I wonder. It would be a shame to see it go.

They have also turned the music soundtrack up on the official introduction video to mask the sound of the engines. The soundclip of the engine starting, revving and driving by on the Porsche website is pretty uninspiring so I'm not surprised they are trying to divert attention away from it.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I think it looks great. My only gripe is the engine. The lettering at the rear needs some getting used to, but I think that if you opt for the model deletion then the matter is resolved.
