    UPDATES: 2018 Porsche Cayenne

It's that time where the current Cayenne generation is on the tail-end of its lifecycle. In keeping with the usual seven-year lifecycle for Porsches, the 2011 958 Cayenne unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010 should see a replacement early in 2017 as a 2018 model. This means that the development cycle should have kicked off by now and mules should be seen running around.

I did a bit of snooping and found these - an old Q7 body riding on an MLB evo platform as seen on the new Q7/Bentayga and already confirmed for the next Cayenne and VW Touareg. Based on the wheels and four-pipe exhaust, pundits are stating that this is an early development mule for the next Cayenne. Taking this and the current time into account, this seems consistent... And means we should see the new camouflaged body in the next few months. Interesting to note: sources are [so far] claiming that the Cayenne will only offer petrol and plug-in hybrids this cycle with no diesels.

Exciting times for Porsche's bestseller; let the development/anticipation begin!

I 100% agree on that. The car is out of any proportion. It also looks a bit low, don't know why - it is more like an Mercedes R-Class - and as we know that car was a hideous flop.

I know this is the old Q7 but it shows the effect. The new Q7 looks even much lower.

Saw a white one just today, looked actually quite good to me but...boring. Not different than the Audi A8 I have to say. Wonderful car but not really a design highlight. Audi had to make the Q7 look smaller (similar to Porsche doing the same with the Cayenne 958 after the 955) and I think they did a very good job. However, Audi doesn't seem to understand that such a design works in Europe well but not in the US, the Middle East or Asia.

Maybe time for different designs for different markets?

The new Q7 looks OK. The old one was more feminine, this one is more masculine... What the VW group really needs is a GLS competitor...

I actually see it the other way around. Smiley The new Q7 is less aggressive and neutral. Actually (almost) doesn't look like a SUV.

Like you said very neutral, practically bland... But the old one had that kind of cute roundness to it whereas the new one has more angles.

    Re: UPDATES: 2018 Porsche Cayenne

Whatever it is, I hope to see it move further away from the Touareg the same way the 958 distanced itself further from the Touareg than the 955/957 did. At least this time around, the deal with VW to use the VR6 engine in the Cayenne and Touareg will expire as it was only for two full model cycles, so we should see an all-Porsche engine range... Well, excluding the diesels and possibly hybrids.

The interior should mirror the 971 Panamera's with touch buttons and much more digitalization but I hope the exterior gets more curves in the shoulders and stronger character lines - not that this car should go the Lexus route with angles and creases everywhere but a little dynamism wouldn't go amiss.

Looking forward to seeing the new mules soon.

Yes, the MT is currently much better looking.

    Re: UPDATES: 2018 Porsche Cayenne

I was debating whether to buy a Cayenne now. Either a Cayenne e-Hybrid or a Cayenne Turbo S.

After configuration, a e-hybrid ended up over CAD$130k from a MSRP of 87k. The Turbo S is slightly better, from 178k to 208k. angel And I don't even think I went crazy with options.

    Re: UPDATES: 2018 Porsche Cayenne

That's why I ended with a Macan after 10 years of Cayenne turbo... Our first one was under $100k. Then the TTS was $143k. It is getting ridiculous. Almost fully loaded Macan turbo $93k... With the money saved we almost can buy a GL450...

The Turbo S is peerless in terms of power/ torque/practicality/ reliability combination. Have you driven a Bentayga yet - that may match it for all I know but at an even higher price point and worse looks?

    Re: UPDATES: 2018 Porsche Cayenne

I think the Cayenne is the perfect SUV for a small family (not more than two kids).

The Cayenne Turbo is usually sufficient to make the driver happy, unless you live in a country where you can actually use the additional power of the Turbo S, like Germany for example (Autobahn).

I miss my former Cayenne GTS a lot and keep in mind that we have a Macan Turbo in the garage, a SUV I learned not to love (I don't hate the Macan but I cannot fall in love with it, can't help it, it just doesn't feel and drive like a SUV which surprisingly is a bad thing for the Macan). I miss that "tank" feel of the Cayenne but combined with a "sportiness" which is difficult to describe (especially compared to other SUVs). My current Jeep GC SRT is very close to the Cayenne but I wish the steering would be different (I guess making a 2.5 t SUV feel like a sports car is a huge challenge Smiley). Also, the Jeep is fast up to 140 kph or so but after that, it gets slower and slower (0-200 kph time is slightly under 20 seconds, a Boxster S is faster).

The only reason I don't have another Cayenne in the garage is...cost. Even a used Cayenne Turbo (facelift) costs half a fortune and I won't even start with the Turbo S. Last time I configured one, I ended up with something close to 200k. No thanks!

So maybe when the new Cayenne generation shows up, I may be able to snatch myself a used Cayenne Turbo S facelift (current model) for little money with a mileage under 30k km. I am not very hopeful though, prices are pretty stable for these cars over here.

You are right the upfront cost and depreciation are a killer. I hope they will keep production numbers under check to at least mitigate it a little bit. When do you think the next generation will be available in Germany - May/ June 2017 or 2018?

    Re: UPDATES: 2018 Porsche Cayenne

Next generation may show up next year but not the Turbo S. The Turbo S may take longer.

Actually, someone I know told me we won't see a new Cayenne until late 2017/early 2018 but this sounds far fetched.

The next Cayenne Turbo is rumored to weight under 2000 kg (I don't know if 1999 or 1900 but below 2000).

Not driven but I have seen the Bentayga in person for their local launch. One of the ugliest car I have seem, perhaps a step up from the Pontiac Aztec.

Interior also put me off. It's still that typical extremely dated Bentley from 10 centuries ago, all the wood trim doesn't help either. Smiley

Just out of curiosity: Do you like how the Bentley Continental GT coupe looks? I like this car a lot, especially the convertible. I don't know if I would buy it but I like it. The Bentayga is kind of weird looking, I think they tried too hard and they also may have had a (design) problem with the platform they are using (just a wild guess though).

I remember when the Cayenne first came out I thought it was pig ugly too ( the looks are better now but still not great), but I bought it because of the unique combination of performance and practicality. The Bentayga's looks are challenging too to say the least, but if the W12 version performs as well as they claim, and the price falls sufficiently (Bentley always do deals) I might consider it. But by then the next gen Cayenne will be out as well as the Lamborghini Urus, oh and the Rolls SUV as well!
