    Re: 718 Boxster & Cayman - new 4cyl models

    RC:

I have some information on power figures now (take them with a grain of salt, they are "confirmed" but since there is no official information out yet...)

    Three engines for now:

    2.0 l with 231 hp and 300 Nm torque

    2.0 l with 286 hp and 350 Nm torque

    2.5 l with 336 hp and 390 Nm torque

An entry level model is also planned with a 1.6 l engine and 200 hp flat.

The 2.5 l engine is good for over 400 hp, so expect a GTS and maybe even a new GT model with that engine.

Would you say the chance of another NA Flat-6 in next GT4 are very low (or zero)?

Honestly, I don't have a clue. If Porsche introduces turbo charged engines in motorsports, this would surely indicate the end of n/a engines in their GT cars. I guess we need to wait and see what happens...

    Re: 718 Boxster & Cayman - new 4cyl models

Ferrari pulled off the transition from n/a to turbo. Porsche will too. Don't forget that eventually everything in cars get better and that the engine change will be eventually drowned in all the other advances. Then after a long time (8 to 15 years) people will appreciate the last n/a as an icon of the time and will scoop them up.

Not sure most Ferrari owners would care, same goes btw. to Porsche owners as well. Smiley The Boxster/Cayman may be a different story though since these are entry level Porsche cars and so far, they (Boxster/Cayman) used flat six engines, allowing owners to somehow identify themselves with the "upper class" 911. Now with the flat four engines, things may be different but who knows, maybe I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time).

If Porsche stops making n/a Carreras and Boxster/Cayman models, the last n/a top models and even their less powerful peers may actually be quite in demand after, like you said, a couple of years. Maybe only in a few decades Smiley but they definitely will mark the transition from n/a engines to turbo engines.

That's the most interesting question in the 718 context for us GT4/Spyder buyers, isn't it ? Smiley My take: as long as Porsche produces NA engines for the GT3/RS, they will simply drop a detuned version of these engines into the upcoming GT4/Spyder variants. Another win-win for Porsche's bottom line: they will ask a higher price for GT4 / Spyder ( "now you guys get our fantastic GT engine" Smiley ) - market shows that they already could have asked higher prices for the current GT4/Spyder -  and at the same time they benefit from the economies of scale (double/triple production of GT engine). Would sound like a typical Porsche value creation story to me Smiley

    Re: 718 Boxster & Cayman - new 4cyl models

Chances to see a detuned GT3/RS n/a engine in a 718 are basically zero. angry Don't forget where the current GT4/Spyder engine is coming from... Smiley

However, the 3.8 l Carrera engine is still alive, it still is Euro 6 and in the most powerful version, it delivers 430 hp, so... Smiley I wouldn't completely exclude the possibility of a facelifted GT4/Spyder with a n/a Carrera engine with 400-410 hp but since the 2.5 l flat four for the 718 is good for over 400 hp, I think that Porsche may have something different in mind for a GT4 reboot. Just a wild guess though.

If that's the case then I'd say probability is high that the current GT4/Spyder will be the last of their kind with a NA engine, because GT engines are the only engines left as potential NA "donor" motors.

Yes, the 3.8 Carrera engine ist still alive, but for how long ? I wouldn't expect the next generation of GT4/Spyder to show up before 2018 or even later ?

according to Autocar, the base Boxster weight has increased from 1315kg to 1400kg!

uggggh...you can equal or even improve  " test track " acceleration numbers for that extra 190 pounds via power and esp fatter turbo motor torque  curve increases ......BUT ....there is no getting around the extra mass once you take onrs  foot away from the gas pedal ....like when stopping , turning, changing lanes briskly , etc ....where you will experience a less nimlble " on its toes " sensation vs whatever was good about the 981.1 ...., no matter what all the computers or its actuators are doing in the background

It is like permanently belting a very large adult in the passenger seat of the 981.1  versions

1.6l and 200hp is pathetic in a performance oriented Porsche. We had to take the Diesel rubbish before, but touching the sports car range is just too much!

This is going to be an entry level car, very basic. It will have a base price slightly under 40k EUR as far as I heard.

Such a version doesn't deserve to be printed on a pricelist with the Porsche crest at all, imv...

I don't see anything wrong with a 1.6l, 200hp 718 at that price, as long as it handles like a Porsche. Everyone is always remarking that cars are getting too powerful for public roads (except the non-speed-limited sections of Autobahn, which apparently are about to become more rare) so why not a car you can drive flat out on public roads? (Well, you'll probably still be breaking the law in most cases.) I don't think this hurts Porsche's image as a sportscar maker one bit. (Unlike the Cayenne and Macan, and Panamera.) It might hurt their image as an exclusive, luxury car maker, but as a sportscar maker, this would seem to only enhance it.

Yes, this will be "great". Porsche will make a direct competitor to any Fabia RS, Octavia RS, Insignia OPC, Clio RS... you name it, from the recent four years...
I can't even see how it will handle with some of them. Shame, real shame...
As i said, making fucking diesel to meet emissions on the Suv range is one thing; but bringing the sports range to the lowest level is suicide, imv...
And all this from the company which just smashed the competition with the 918... Shame!

    Re: 718 Boxster & Cayman - new 4cyl models

That's a bit elitist. I was thrilled to buy a lowly Boxster at 30 year old and enjoyed it greatly.

I think he may be worried about the brand, brand dilution and whatnot but I think this ship has already sailed with the first Porsche Diesel... angry Honestly, I think that an entry level Boxster could actually help Porsche to create a new customer base on the lower (income) level, next to the Macan. They just need to be careful to give the entry level 718 a more basic look but I think that Porsche plays this model variation game pretty well since they have a lot of experience.

Thanks god they didn't develop an even more basic model under the Boxster and I'm still waiting for that mid engined Ferrari/Lamborghini competitor (but judging by the current 911 Turbo S prices, I doubt it will come...).

Why? At least it's still a sports car, and it still handles much better than 99.99% of sports cars. I would buy such a model here in Canada, where the speed limits are so insanely slow, you can still speed in 2nd on the "highway" The handling and fun would be top priority, and those are covered most likely.

2.0 liter engines have 50% less consumer tax than larger-than-2.0 liter engines (90% vs 135%) here in Turkey. Therefore, the facelifted cayman will have a big price impact (in a bad way) over our MY14 Cayman 2.7

I put our cayman on sale and wish to sell it before april.
