    991.2 GT3 Thread Closed

    Lots of rumors on another forum and most recent ones claim the facelift 991 GT3 will have a 3.0L Turbo motor (but with significant upgrades from Carrera S) - possibly electric turbocharger(s)?  Also mentions that Manual gearbox may be offered along with PDK-S.

    Also, seems unlikely that GT4 facelift would continue with NA if GT3 goes Turbo.

    Does anyone have rumors to share?

    That's a pretty entertaining thread over there.  Pretty funny if you ask me.  I don't buy the cleaning lady's specs.  Every single 911 is going to be a turbo?  I understand why Porsche has had to make the move to turbos but a GT3 with a turbo engine is not a GT3.  It's a less powerful GT2.  Porsche is turbocharging almost every engine it produces for every car or SUV it produces and that's a large number....

    Why can't they produce a couple thousand NA GT3s over the course of a model cycle?

    Marketing.

    If they make a good turbo GT3 it justifies the move of the entire line to turbos.

    I was reading somewhere about the new turbo Ferraris and how engineers had kept the torque low at lower revs to maintain the right noises and character of a "Ferrari" engine (but they'd also dropped the rev limit quite a bit) - I guess this is what Porsche will do, I personally hate it, it is a totally manufactured fake set of power and torque curves which are far away from the awesome N/A engines of the past where the power is eeked out at highest revs through efficient traditional tuning.

    I suspect the vast majority of buyers will not give this aspect a second thought as the cars will be measurably better in every metric the marketing department pick on and I'm sure they will be made to sound OK as well.

    Seems posible that the next GT3 may have a turbocharged engine I really find it difficult to believe that they would use the Carrera engine on the next GT3. If that were the case I don't think they would call it a GT3 but rather it would a sportier version of the Carrera line, like the rumored 991 R. But if there is one thing that has always differentiated the GT3's is that it had a different track-racing oriented engine than the carrera. so that doesn't make sense, would be a very tough thing to sell by Porsche marketing department to GT3 customers IMO.

    The new Carrera engine is a new development and can be changed to many different applications, by simply switching some parts. Interesting concept, so yes, the next GT3 engine, if turbo charged, could actually be based on this one.

    Porsche engine engineering has evolved a lot, the engines are basically bullet proof now, so no worries here. I know they had difficulties with the first 991 GT3 engine but like I said in the past...supplier issues. When you order only a small quantity of parts from specialized suppliers, this is what happens. Unfortunately.

    I would prefer an NA Flat-8, but I could be happy with a GT3 using electric turbos and manual gearbox if the performance, price, and fun are in good proportions.

    What about the new upcoming EU emissions restrictions didn't you exactly understand? Smiley

    V8 engines will be at some point a thing of the past, unfortunately. Even the turbo charged ones. Smiley

    Porsche is rumored to work on a new V8 engine generation with lower capacity (4 l and lower) but so far, I haven't heard anything new about this engine. I just hope it comes because I cannot imagine a Cayenne or even a proper mid engined Ferrari/Lamborghini competitor without a decent V8...at least. Or flat 8 if you want to but I'm not so sure Porsche will go that way. The 4-cyl. is a different story.

    I am still surprised that Chrysler came up with the Hellcat models. I wonder how long this will be sustainable for them from an emissions and fleet consumption/CO2 output point of view. Smiley There is also a rumor that a Jeep GC with Hellcat engine could become a reality but I really wonder how Chrysler will do that? Maybe they find a loophole (limited production models under a different manufacturer name, I don't have a clue how this could work).

    I didn't mean it would just be the Carrera S motor with more boost.  I'd still expect dry sump and other significant upgrades.   I believe the current 9,000 rpm GT3 motor and 2.7L base Boxster share the same motor (9A1) in the same sort of general sense.  

    Aside from that and same displacement, a Turbo GT3 motor would still be special.

    As I mentioned before, the new turbo Carrera engine can be used for various setups and configurations. However, as far as I heard, the next generation 911 Turbo/S engine will be actually the one used as a basis for the next GT models, of course in a different setup and track oriented. With or without turbo chargers, I don't have a clue (next gen GT3).

    Personally I would prefer 3.0 Turbo Carrera to 3.6 NA Carrera BUT when you speak of weekend toy for the track I would definately prefer 3.8 NA over a 3.0 Turbo for GT3.

    I'd love the turbo engines on daily cars but don't like them on special weekend cars. Another example, I loved the turbo engine on California T which I also test drive in Hungary but didn't like the turbo engine of 488.

    I attended Ferrari racing days at Hungaroring this june where I test drove the 488 at the track and california T at the back roads. The new turbo engine goes with the GT character of California; very powerful and torque. It is a daily bases car and benefits from huge torque reserves of the turbo engine starting from 2500 rpm to 7000 rpm.

    on the other hand, I regularly track my 458 and keep revving the engine to the max. Therefore I found the turbo engine of the 488 very serene and calm, with a dissapointing 7509 rpm rev limiter. The turbo engine is fast but lacks some character for the mid engine V8 sporty model, IMO.

    RC, I am going to go super-optimistic and speculate that the EU and US emissions regulators will finally realize that these small displacement turbo motors are just another, more subtle, less VW-eggregious approach to getting around their regulations. And they will hopefully switch to ways of measuring emissions and consumption that better reflect real-world usage, and develop new regulations whereby NA motors will be at less of a disadvantage than these turbo motors.

    Too much to hope for?
