Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

It seems some people are confused or mis-informed regarding the MP3 playing capability of the 997 PCM system.

Fact is: ALL cars built after april/may 2005, have indeed a PCM system with MP3 playing capability through the internal CD reader only (CD changer still doesn't play MP3 files).
The MP3 capable PCM system also plays WMA files.

BUT: it seems that the CD reader of the PCM is very sensitive to the quality of the CD ROM discs used. It also seems that CD/RW (rewriteable CDs) are less supported than ordinary CD/Rs which can be recorded only once. It also depends how you burn the CDs, it is recommended to burn a CD in one session only and close it completely.

    Short FAQ:

    1. PCM systems on cars built after april/may 2005 play MP3 and WMA files through the internal CD reader
    2. PCM system sensitive to quality of CDs used
    3. It is recommended to use CD-Rs instead of CD/RWs (rewriteable)

    Hope this helps.

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

The media should play a role indeed, its got to be suported by the firmware of the PCM.

I use Philips CD-RW 700MB rewritables and burn them with Nero Burning Rom, at 10x, and no multisesion. They work without a flaw. I don't know about other media, since I have not tried but those that want to use Re-Writables, they can try this one

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

Thanks RC for the clarification and thanks Carlos for the tip as to which brand to use.

I have a batch of 50 TDK CDRs which I haven't finished yet so I'm hoping I can use those without problem to burn some MP3 CDs for when I collect my 997S in Stuttgart and go for a 1 week drive around Europe before heading home to the UK.

Wow, 1 week of driving around europe! Good way to break in your car. By the time you get back to UK, you are set to go on the tracks and test its true capabilities

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

Yeah man - I can't wait - I'm really looking forward to it!

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

Having used, burned and ripped Mp3's almost since their inception, I would consider myself pretty much an expert in this field.

Having heard all the hype of the PCM 2 (finally) introducing mp3 , I was anxious to give my NEWLY BURNT Immation mp3 disk a test in my '06 c4 (cockpit player). I was shocked that the unit would not play the disc (message : NO Disc in player). At first, I thought that it must only play in the 6 disc changer - but again - no luck.

I hope this doesnt mean a PCM failure on my new car.

How did you burn the MP3 files? What size are your Imation CD-Rs? Some oversized CD-Rs aren't working, you shouldn't use CD-Rs with more than 700 MB capacity.
The "best" CD burning program seems to be Nero 6 or 7.
Also try to avoid CDs with black surfaces or special coatings. Avoid no-name CD-Rs and make sure that you don't burn MP3 Pro instead of MP3 files.

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

Funny (not really) but the mp3 CD-R I've had in my P-car since November stopped playing today. Will try another mp3 disc and a regular CD tomorrow.

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

I have read that some CDR/CDRW get screwed up with heat.

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

I burn my CD-R discs (TDK's with 650 MB capacity) with iTunes (I'm using version 6.0.1.3 and they have a new version out, 6.0.4 I think). I've got one disc with 156 songs, nearly 8 and 3/4 hours of music. It plays quite well.

Re: Confusion regarding PCM and MP3 playing capability

My car was manufactured in April 2005. Is there a way to check on the PCM that it has MP3 capability?

RC, I use Nero 7 or Adaptec Ez Cd creator and only use 700 mb disks - so there is still no clues there unfortunately. I am going to give it a few more tries with some newly burnt cd's and see what happens.
