It's a nice package. How have they achieved quite a higher topspeed with only 20 hp more? Due to Pdk ratios? The torque hasn't changed at all, engine limitations or pdk limitations? Overall it's a stunning car, but nothing really that we haven't expected.

    O have the same question.

How did they achieve overall improvement in accel and top speed doing very small changes in hp & torque?

They say they changed the compressor on the S (more likely it is changed on the regular Turbo also) so the 20hp is more than just a software tweak and the hp will be sustainable at high speeds due to cooler intake charge through this bigger compressor, this means higher top speed is possible.

I think they restricted the top speed of the .1 turbo and S because at high loadings it ran quite rich to keep temperatures in check and they limited top speed to keep the engine safe. Whenever we saw turbo S's at vmax events they all had very black exhausts after running up to ~305kph....

I reckon the new turbo S will be hitting 300kph in 26s, can't wait for the tests Smiley

Regaring the above discussion of 0-300kph times - AMS just tested the 488GTB:

    0-200 8,9
    0-300 25.6

Based on RCs input the 991.2 TTS would be quite competitive.

The 0-200 kph time is impressive, the 0-300 time not so much. It seems that Ferrari goes the safe way and reduces power/boost pressure in the upper speed range and aerodynamics could also play a role as well. In the past, Ferrari cars didn't exactly show the advertised aerodynamics figures.

Unfortunately, I would prefer the 991 Turbo S to have the performance the other way around: 0-200 kph in 8.9 seconds and 0-300 kph slower. Smiley

The Ferrari time also sets the goal for the next Turbo S generation: 0-200 kph need to be hit under 9 seconds. With the rumored hybrid tech, it should be possible.

You are certainly right that an even better 0-200 time for the turbo S would be great. However, the "average" 0-200 or even 100-200 should be the same in the 488 and the turbo S in real life conditions, if you ask me. The turbo S with AWD is just more usable in less than ideal environments. Also, I like the idea of being as fast or even slightly faster than the 488 above 200kph Smiley

Re: OFFICIAL: new 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

I doubt you are going to be faster than the 488 in the upper speed range but both cars should be pretty close to each other once you pass 250-260 kph.

In the latest SPORT AUTO, one editor complains about the fact that car manufacturers like Ferrari but also Lamborghini(!) refuse to provide test cars for comparison tests. Same goes to Maserati and even Alfa Romeo with the 4C. So I guess we're never going to see a direct 488 vs. 991.2 Turbo S comparison, simply because Ferrari refuses to provide a test car for such a test. SPORT AUTO could certainly find a customer car for that purpose but then, they would never ever get a test car again. Seriously, this is embarrassing and pathetic.

You could argue that this reflects on the "true" performance of Ferrari. If they cannot stand a fair comparison the reason is most likely that their products will not meet expectations Smiley As a Ferrari customer one should assume the worst.

Given the credits the new turbos seem to get already, would this make the pre-facelifted turbos a good second had buy ?

For under 100k, definitely yes but I doubt they will go under the 100k EUR mark any time soon.

You will see the 60 - 300 comparison. By May at the latest. And you will see the 3-4 second gap and the fact that 90hp difference is 90hp difference :)

You seem to have a lot of hope Smiley RC's infos are usually very precise.

Re: OFFICIAL: new 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

The people who believe that Porsche can cut 4 seconds from the 100-200 time of the 991.1 Turbo S by just adding 20hp must have a lot of hope. The 488 is a proven 25.x car.

for myself and for many ferrari clients who i know the essence of owning ferraris is not in those meaningless numbers but in what the cars do for the owner on a very different emotional level. typically the porsche clients are very much attached to those numbers, most likely because most of the porsches offer very little in the emotions department. in that sense ferrari's refusal to provide test cars for acceleration comparison tests makes sense to me. they score elsewhere much more, in a domain not taken into account by AMS tests.

Re: OFFICIAL: new 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

Very well said.  I know many owners of older Porsche vehicles feel similar.  And for many years Porsche enthusiasts collectively responded to straight-line comparisons that way, with good reason.  Though I am more in the Porsche camp, I can fully appreciate your point here.  Had I more money to work with regularly I would probably sway over to that side of the ownership experience at least on occasion.

I do think Ferrari take it a little too far if they threaten to cut a regular customer off from future allocations or even pursue some kind of trademark damages for making their privately owned vehicles available for comparisons.  I can see some line of reasoning there, but its a little too protective and implies they have something to hide.

I made a typo in my previous post. I meant the 100-300 time, not the 100-200 time.
