......but when it comes to braking, basically all cars are the same on snow/ice.

The SUV's chassis disadvantages (weight, high center of gravity, softer suspension, long wheel travel) only get worse when it's slippery. The 911 inherently has the best car architecture for breaking (heavy rear) and it also works in the winter.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

    Whoopsy:

Why suffer in other cars in the winter? No matter how good a SUV is, any sports car/GT cars still drives a hell lot better. Long road trips in the winter where it might or might not snow? FF or G? FF all the way. I did do that, quite a number of times too. A 911 Turbo is just as capable as the FF with proper tires for traction.

Well said! Although, I wouldnt put FF & 911 in same category, since FF is much more practical. FChat is full of threads where people drive their FF`s through whole year with no issues. Its pretty funny to read posts where extra careful Ferrari owners like to drive their FF`s in terrible conditions Smiley

P.S. Nick, do you plan to take new GTC4Lusso?

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

I was talking about cars as in sportscars, sorry for the confusion. However you'd be surprised to learn that some modern SUVs have special ESP/ABS setups and specific front and rear tire mixtures to improve braking distances on snow and even ice, compensating for the additional weight. Also do not forget that while many SUVs are driving on H rated winter tires, many sportscars are using V rated winter tires, some even with a 270 kph speed rating. Great in cold temperatures but not so great on snow.

610 was manually shifting. You could hear and see it hit the limiter.

Why odd? In real life, the 991.2 Turbo S and the Huracan LP610-4 are basically identical in straight line performance.

The LP580-2 is indeed a bit slower, also because the car has a few (minor) traction issues (maybe the ESP jumps in too often). There is no real advantage because of the lighter weight in straight line acceleration.

    MKSGR:

Did a GPS based 200-300 kph test on my 991.2 turbo s Cabriolet. The outcome was between 17s and 19s - i.e. 0-300 (just adding the official 0-200 times) should be between 27s and 29s (with the top closed, of course).

A little update: I repeated the GPS test and also did one on a 650s.

The turbo s (cabriolet) was between 27 and 28s, i.e. consistent with the above result.

    The 650s was about 4s faster, i.e. between 23 and 24s.

Both tests done under virtually the same conditions.

The NSX is a heavy pig. I'll take the r8.

The NSX is a look at what cars will be like. As such it will be outdated shortly. The r8 is the last of the big engine super cars and it represent what you not ever be able to buy again shortly.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

Well, you'll always be able to buy them because the used ones aren't going anywhere any time soon. I don't see a rush to own the "last of the NA" cars because they'll be around for a long time still. Same with manuals. None of these cars are really disappearing so long as you're OK with outdated infotainment.

Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 Turbo and Turbo S

Monday my GT3 was in for its 2 yr service and they gave me a 911 Turbo ( not the S ). I loved it, muted exhaust , yes, but the low down pull grunt was fantastic which allowed much fun, The engine was an absolute peach too. Both are 911's but obviously so different. The Turbo has to be the best everyday car out there, truly amazing bit of kit.

The Mrs preferred the Turbo and wants me to release the GT3 for one no, not sure about that indecision..

I was about to suggest Fullthrottle as an alternative name which you could use even before you part-exed your n/a GT3, but then I realised it might not sound too good to the German-speaking members here.   Smiley

Don't do it, you will regret it.

I drive a turbo charged car (Mini JCW, latest model) every single day and the turbo lag drives me crazy. Same happens when I drive my wife's Macan Turbo, which not only has a turbo lag but also a certain softness in the drivetrain which lacks the feel of a Cayenne Turbo for example. It is difficult to explain.

The 991.2 Turbo S has not much turbo lag but it is still there. If you are used with (and spoiled by) a n/a engine, you will never enjoy the turbo engine. Since I have my R8, I am addicted to that engine and the throttle response. It is something I will never want to miss again. Even my 991.1 GTS doesn't have this amazing spontaneity and throttle response, not even in Sport Plus mode (I drive my R8 in Dynamic mode all the time, not even in the sportiest Performance mode).

Bottom line is: The 991.2 Turbo S is a very tempting car. It is fast as hell, the turbo boost feel is amazing, the Turbo S feels basically twice as powerful Smiley as my R8, especially in the low and mid rev range and the 991.2 Turbo S is in it's last development generation and highly refined. A very desirable car but you would get bored fast after a while because you already drove the GT3.

Yes, the 991.2 Turbo S is more comfortable and all but you are going to miss your GT3 badly, even if you gain more straight line performance. The Turbo S only makes sense in a country without speed limit and/or bad weather all the time (as a daily driver). As a weekend toy, the Turbo S sucks. Smiley I speak from experience.

Yep, I think you would be right. I would miss the event side of the N/A GT3's exhaust note.

Turbo S would make an awesome second car though. The S must be a great blast for covering tarmac quickly.

Actually, I don't remember saying that the Turbo S is boring before I actually owned one. The R8 experience also has been a real eye opener but the same could be said about many other cars currently on the market and in a similar price range with the Turbo S (wonderful daily driver, I can't repeat it often enough but... Smiley).
