    Comfortable mileage??

    A friend just sold a C4 with high 20K's mileage on it and he mentioned that he was getting beat up because of higher mileage. Not to get into the "it's a car, don't worry, just drive it" debate but, what is considered to be excessive yearly mileage for these cars? Over 10K per year?

    10,000 certainly isn't 'excessive'. Here in the UK, the average mileage here (for non-business use) is about 8,000-10,000 miles per year. Anything over 12,000-14,000 per year is quite heavy.

    Having said all that, the crucial issue is what kind of mileage has the car done? 10,000 miles of city traffic or 10,000 miles gliding along the motorway? I'm sure you get my drift. Unfortunately, the second hand values can't differentiate between these types of use.

    Your mileage figures make sense and I'm sure apply here too. I think that Europeans in general aren't as hung up about mileage especially with F-cars.

    Just made a quick trip to Kelley Blue Book site.

    A 2005 C2S with 5K miles has a trade in value of us$67K
    same exact car with 40K miles has a value of us$50K.

    So us $17K for 35,000 extra miles is the difference.

    I dunno, is that alot?

    Maybe you could make another trip to Kelley Blue Book Site to check out if depreciation on, say, a 40,000 mile F360 would be below 50c / mile?

    PS: Just assuming you'll find a 40,000 mile F360.

    I guess when you are buying a car one wants as little miles on it as possible. Say less than 10K. It's almost like one should buy the car and park it in the garage so when they sell it they can get max value. If you can get a good deal and the car is in good condition go for it. 20K+ would not worry me.

    I've traded in two (or more) P/F/MB 55/65 every yr for 5+ yrs, w/5K+ mis.....trade-in values for various reasons, incl mileage, model's inavailability, color, part of US, season, whether dealer/region has a near-term shortage of model being traded-in, one's relationship w/specific dealer, etc etc are highly "variable".....it's a "lumpy" valuation .....in summ, those who can't afford/are really stretching to casually drive any car 15K+ mi/yr show themselves fairly quickly .....but no shame, in any major mkt in world, incl SF/NYC/LA, very few are seen casually commuting in their "big dog" <1yo 612/430/65/996TTS on a rainy Tu, even in Woodside/Greenwich/BelAir......

    Given the reliability of a P/car, the rational thing as an low/average mileage driver would be to find a high mileage, young car for a snip and then "even out" the mileage to a usual level during ownership. But then if we were rational we'd drive Skoda's. D
