Well, one of our fellow 918 owners updated his car and did some runs at Road America. He hit 181mph at the end of the front straight before going into turn 1.

I have never driven or even been on that track, so I have no reference. Maybe some experienced fellows can chime in.

All I know is the front straight is around 3/4 mile in length and turn 14 heading into the straight is a 200' radius turn, turn 1 that follows is a 348' radius turn. Maybe some geeks here can whip out a calculator and do some math :)

I did some internet surfing to see if I could find out any comparables (I know - I have no life).  I found this track analysis on the link below.  It has speed trap information for various classes of race cars - they were trapping at between 160mph for GTD class to 175mph for the prototype class.

    http://nasportscar.com/bens-analysis-road-america/

Warm welcome to a fellow Canadian here :)

Thanks for the effort but just 1 little detail, those speed trap speeds are from between T4 an T5, and I was talking about speed at the end of the front straight before T1.

Sorry for the mistake.  Maybe you could find out from your fellow owner if he has the trap time for between T4 and T5?

Minimize the number of corner entrance and exits, and maximized the time spent on straights. P1 has the HP and top end advantage over the 918.

I certainly understand that this configuration favored the P1 (as shown by the lap time), but I don't understand why they decided to use the smaller track.  You seem to be suggesting that the owner of all three cars wanted the P1 to win.  Seems like he wouldn't have a horse in the race, owning all three cars.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Maybe the other part of the track is too damp or whatever the reason maybe.

I do not believe one bit Paul would want the P1 to win, I think the LaFerrari is his favourite. The P1 just happens to come out on top in a very tight grouping. I am just suggesting the reason the P1 came out on top.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

P1 has trefeo r tires. It will be the slowest around the track if it has the same tires with other two cars.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

IMO it was a bit daft to do the comparison on such different tyres - it simply turns the result into a discussion about the tyres. OTOH I don't have a problem with the McLaren's track mode; if it has it, use it - nothing was stopping the other two manufacturers including one..

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

But you can argue that the trefeo R is an optional tyre on the P1 and here was nothing to stop the other two manufacturers from using it...

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Pirelli doesn't make the Trofeo R in proper sizes for the 918, nor the LaFerrari, nor the P1.

    918 has 265/35-20 325/30-21

    LaFerrari 265/30-19 345/30-20

    P1 245/35-19 315/30-20 (proper designed sizing)

The Trofeo Rs that the P1's been running are sized for the 12C/650S, 235/35-19 305/30-20.

The Cup2s, on the other hand has 7 out of the 8 sizes mentioned above, Michelin doesn't make a 315/30-20, but they do have 305/30-20 and 325/30-20. 325 might be pushing it to fit the P1 though, with Race mode dropping the car down, all the volume inside the wheel well will be gone.

Maybe some enterprising individual who have access to all 3 cars can call up Michelin and ask for Cup2s all around and compare the cars.

But even then it still won't work, the 918's Cup2s are designed for the 918, the GT3RS wears the same size rubber but those Cup2s are structurally different and have different compounds also. I believe the LaFerrari's certified Corsas are also different than the P1 certified Corsas. Apples to oranges comparison again.

The only fair way to compare is to wear the factory certified rubber, if the tread and compound gives one car a clear advantage or a clear disadvantage, then so be it. Blame it on the factory for choosing the wrong kind of tire.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Isn't the Trefeo R an option on the P1?

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Wasn't at launch. McLaren slap the 12C option tires on when they found out the performance of the competition.

12C was originally delivered with PZeros, with the PZero Corsas as an option tires. Then later they added Trofeo R as another option tires.

They have since calibrated the ECU to those tires, but the car wasn't designed with the Trofeo R on. But then again the P1 is a souped up 12C after all.

I wouldn't really want to drive the Trofeo R on public roads, especially not in countries with a colder climate.

The PZero is an excellent tire, especially the generations put on the market over the past couple of years. Not a tire for track records of course but a very good allrounder.

Surprised that McLaren couldn't get Pirelli to make one in the right size!

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Corsas are the Pirelli equivalent of the Michelin Cup2s, and Pirelli did developed those with McLaren. But it would seems like McLaren underestimated the competition and had to go to the 12C's Trofeo R for a quick fix.

You know, the P1 owners who are using Trofeo Rs swears by them, keep saying they drive fine on the road and loved the extra grip it has over the Corsas.

I like the regular PZeros too. Have them on both my Ferraris. They may not have the ultimate dry grip of the Michelin Super Sports but the Pirelli works better in the wet and cold.

Some data from the latest comparison (take with a grain of salt):

    Max speed on the straight
    P1 - 160.076 mph
    LaFerrari - 159.799 mph
    918 - 157.698 mph

    Max Cornering
    918 - 1.29 g
    P1 - 1.26 g
    LaFerrari - 1.24 g

    Max breaking
    918 - 1.49 g
    P1 - 1.46
    LaFerrari - 1.38 g

So if Porsche ungrades the power a bit more, it should be the fastest car on a technical or fast flowing track!

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

Sneak peek to what I will be getting at Paul Ricard later this month.

Untitled.jpgThis is my schedule, I am flying charter directly into Paul Ricard, others will be flying into Marseille and Porsche is transporting them to the track via helicopters.

About 9 hrs in a 918 the first day and 8 more on the second.

Whoopsy: Great programme . I love the Castellet, not only for the track but also for the surroundings .  And staying at Le Castellet hotel just next to the track is perfect !

I usually go there in late May with our local Porsche club .

I hope you get good weather . Going in the evening to a nice restaurant on the sea front is also nice and only a short drive .

    Enjoy !

I don't think any event will match Le Mans. Smiley

But knowing Porsche, any event they host will be a treat and top notch.

I just hope I have the stamina to last 2 full days on the track with a car as capable as the 918. I am not even close to a pro driver, and it's quite mentally and physically draining to go that fast.

I am wondering who will Porsche send as the instructors. Never got around to ask them about it. I think the Works drivers probably will not make it, they have a race in Shanghai. Perhaps Walter Rohrl might make an appearance.

On a side note, my custom order Porsche Motorsport driving suit had arrived at my home, too bad I am too far away to grab it and attend the event with it.

I did the second best thing. They gave me the final information 1 day too late, I left home already when I learnt that helmets are mandatory and it's bring your own helmets or rent at the track. So I called up Stand21 and had them FedEx me a Porsche Motorsports helmet to me :)

Not free. The package is around 7000 Euro, but that's bring your own 918. I had decided not to ship mine over and 'rent' one from Porsche at a cost of 15k Euro. That's actually quite a bit cheaper than me flying my car on a round trip.

They had another training course earlier mid August at Leipzig, that one cost 6000 Euro.

Porsche organizes 4-5 events a year for 918 owners, each event with about 20 customers, so about 800 customers fighting for 20 spots, they sellout quickly. My next one will be ice driving course in Finland next March, missed this year's event but I get to bring my son with me next year as his spring break coincide with the event dates.
