    997 Targa

The 997 Targa will be based on the Carrera 4 (Widebody).

    Re: 997 Targa

This was to be expected after seeing the spy pics. As far as I can remember, there has been no spy pic of a narrow-body 997 Targa.

Also worth mentioning, the 997 Targa is known as the 997 C4 Targa in the internal development database. However, this does not necessarily imply that the Targa will only be available as AWD.
Maybe Porsche will sell more Targas, thanks to people who want a 2WD widebody but find the GT3RS too extreme.

    Re: 997 Targa

Correct the 997 Targa will be based on the C4 body. But keep in mind the 997 generation is wide period. There was a huge difference between the old targa and the C4S, I had both of them and just did not care for the 996 Targa skinny body. The 997C4S is wider than the C2S but unless you see them next to each other the difference is not that significant, in my eyes at least.

    Re: 997 Targa

    The wider the better!

    Re: 997 Targa

No doubt, the wider the prettier and more intimidating .

    Only on cars

    Re: 997 Targa

Yes don't want to get it confused

    Re: 997 Targa

I'm really excited to have the widebody confirmed. A T4S!

Maybe we'll also see a TTT (Targa Twin Turbo)!

    Re: 997 Targa

I forgot that it will have 4-wheel drive.

    Man this is funny

    Re: 997 Targa

    Any photos yet?

    Re: 997 Targa

In my opinion, Porsche could offer any model (C2, C4, Turbo) in three styles; coupe, targa, cab... wouldn't that make things a lot easier for customers?

This is what killed the Targa IMHO. From the 993 on, it was only available as narrow-body 2WD, and it was "marketed" as a separate model, so most people didn't even know it existed.
Bring back the Targa turbo! (did you know they made a 930 Targa for a few years? One of the rarest 911 ever!)

Take this one for the first.

    I'm looking forward to it.

    Re: 997 Targa

    SWEET!!!

    Re: 997 Targa

I think this is great,...I would love to see a Targa 4/4S.

    So do I!

    Re: 997 Targa

Love the concept, dislike the execution. I could see springing for a targa, but the profile really bothers me. The sharp point on the rear side window really jars with the curves of the rest of the car. Why couldn't they keep it the same and treat the targa as what is really is--a bigger sunroof?

    Just my 2 cents.

    Re: 997 Targa

I think this is related to the fact that the original 993 Targa was based on the 993 cab. It looked like a cab with a glass hard top because it actually was one.
Today, the 996 and 997 Targas are based on the C4 coupé, but they kept the 993 roof line.

It's the true heir to the exclusive 356 Hard-Top Coupé!

    Re: 997 Targa

I love the 'idea' of a targa top. Glass roof: lots of light coming in etc etc. The only concerns I have are:

    (i) how much structural stiffness is lost by the glass roof compared to the coupe,
(ii) when you retract the targa roof, you have 2 panes of glass (where they overlap) and this looks really odd. They are not completely parallel when open.
(iii) I'm less keen on the pointed parts of the side windows compared to the more rounded parts on the coupe.

    Re: 997 Targa

    (i) I have no specific figures, but the Targa is stiffer than the cab. To be 100% honest, it might be better, as the following factoids show:
The -20mm option will not be available on the Targa either because it is too hard on the frame (by Porsche standards. Other manufacturers might not care ).
Also, the roof has to be regularly re-adjusted to avoid rattles. The glass panels and the steel beams do not absorb energy at the same rate. As a consequence, the mechanism gradually loosens - hence the extra maintenance.

(ii) True. True parallelism would be impossible given the shape of the roof. Related downsides: when the roof is open, rear vision is bad, and rear passengers get a *close* hair cut.

(iii) True. On the plus side, Targas are very exclusive, and immediately stand out in a sea of regular coupés.

The concept has its drawbacks, but the glass roof is definitely worth it IMHO.

    Re: 997 Targa

I suppose no one has pricing on this yet

    Re: 997 Targa

I think it is safe to assume that it'll cost about $6k more than the corresponding coupé version, just like in the 996 days. That's about $78k for a 3.6L RWD Targa.
