    2017 Acura NSX

I think the discussion about the NSX got lost in the data loss, so.... to review:

The NSX has been much delayed and much changed, but final versions have now been shown and are being driven un-camouflaged around the US (production is in Ohio), latest word is production summer 2016 (so my guess is, sold as 2017 model year).   The linked article below summarizes final tech decisions, including Honda's decision to ditch the original production based V6 and design a bespoke V6 for this car.  Overall, it looks like providing a 918 for mortals....  Interesting interviews around with the chief designer (Michelle Christensen out of Honda's US design team) who talked about continually stripping down the concept cars overall shapes - the final result IMO is not bad, certainly much less busy than the concepts and no more so than competing cars from McLaren etc.  Not a Ford GT perhaps, but maybe more attainable?

This will never be a hit in the EU due to widespread prejudices about Japanese cars and the strong support of EU sports car producers, but could easily do well in North America and Asia, where the original NSX had a very good reputation for fun per dollar, and being a very liveable mid-engine.   As always, the truth will be in the driving...

Wow! Loving the looks of this! A bit too "mazda-ish" maybe, but the overall shape looks really nice and compact!

I always liked the original NSX. Looking forward to test driving this new one.

Interesting . Just a petty they put the nearly exact Civic front to it . That makes it look cheap .

The boomerang back lights are now the new trend........ after Aston, Porsche has them on the 991.2 and Honda have the same shape too ,

The key to the NSX will be its weight (not yet published); its a bit smaller than the 918 but if all Porsche's wizards and $$ still came up with about 1700 kg for the 918, it is hard to see that Honda can beat that weight... so maybe 1800 kg?

expecting a car that is cost -engineered to market profitably in the pricing range of a GT3 but to have the exotic chassis frame materials in million dollar 918 is a little bit unrealistic , doncha  think !?

This isnt a massve loss leading halo , like the Bugatti is supposed to be for VWAG , but which has never been because it has been sold  more as a piece of jewelry via all its increasingly tackier special editions to Eastern bloc oligarchs' London mistresses  than a car , copying the Hublot Big  Bang and Richard Mille school of cynical smoke and mirrors rich but dumb marketing

the first gen 1989 -1993 NSX was the sweetest handling car of the trio that included the new 964 and Ferrari 348 back then ...by far . It felt like it was 15 years ahead .  Their values are now climbing .

It was the best thing to ever happen to Ferrari ...forced them to refocus future product on technology desiring buyers ,  not cocaine dealers

    Re: 2017 Acura NSX

MKW that was my point, they can't duplicate the 918 tech, so the only question is, how much heavier?  The Honda engineers must still care about the weight since too much will kill the performance goals.  One guess is, less e-capacity due to less battery capacity than 918, saving weight while still proclaiming hybrid advantages.  We should know soon enough, if production begins in summer they will be arranging media etc. tests over winter.

Agree on the original NSX, just saw a pristine local one yesterday and it still looks good. But - now harder to find well cared for examples not modded to death.

why are you even putting the 918 in this discussion on a 911 priced car ...do you hold current Honda  engineering in that high a regard , vs where they were  in the 1980s ( see my prev post ) !?

    Re: 2017 Acura NSX

No, just that its the only hybrid to compare to.  The media will make the comparo anyways, as much of a stretch as it is.

so if enthusiasts and the car press are naturally curious to compare a " low cost " hybrid mid engined 150 K near exotic sports car to a LaFerrari, P1  and 918 and not a GT3 or 488 or R8 , marketing folks at Honda would be thrilled for such 4 car " shoot outs" in all the press , even if they place last !

personally, if it were MY million bucks and I wanted the latest hybrid mid engined sports car, I 'd get a 150k NSX as a DD and replace it every few years with the next big thing and spend the remaining $850K on a still relatively affordable  pristine Carrera GT , the last of the real " he-man " Porsches : limited production supercar, exotic construction, manual transmission ONLY, normally aspirated F1 sounding V10 ,widow-making absence of stability control with just  minimal traction control ...the real defining end of the first one hundred years of automobiles and therefore will be worth WAY more than a 918 in the future , whose first gen hybrid tech will be laughably obsolete a decade from now or sooner

Sorry BMW, I slighted your i8 in saying that.... so I correct myself, there are two existing hybrid mid-engine sports cars, with the NSX making three.

150k base price for a Honda? No thanks. For under 100k, this car could actually get the chance to evolve slowly and maybe after a couple of years on the market and with a certain fanbase, they could slowly raise the price tag.

When the original NSX came out, I thought it looked better than most supercars at that time.  Went for a test drive and it drove like a very fast Honda Accord, but I had no money at that time.  Got a poster on my wall for all 4 years during my med school to act as an inspiration to study...

This one actually looks worse than the current R8.  I will not want a poster of it even if someone pays me to put it up.

How much weight and power will be the key. They claim around 550hp and 3700 pd. If true, performance wise it will have issues

Over 500 hp, whatever this means. Weight? Well, this is a hybrid, so it won't be light. My guess is around 1.8 tons, maybe even more but Honda engineers claim they have set the major weight very low, so the handling will actually benefit from the weight (if true...it is however possible). Interesting car but too expensive in my opinion. You can get the new Audi R8 for similar money, even if the performance of the NSX may be better (straight line).

The car looks pleasant, but not spectacular. It's just too similar to all the other super sports cars out there. But then again, BMW went for a more progressive and different look, and many dislike it. Hard to win really.

    Re: 2017 Acura NSX

For any interested... first video reviews are coming out; not necessarily from the best sites which is a bit odd.  First impressions:  Honda seems to have gone for easy-to-drive as opposed to edgy; highly capable but perhaps a bit sterile for true petrolheads - if true this will perhaps aim for a new owner segment rather than tempting R8 owners.   Seems to sound nice and shifting seems very quick indeed.

Maybe.... its just that Japanese performance cars sort of operate in a different world (we both own Japanese rally-specials so have some insights into this...).  I read recently that Nissan will, sometime in 2015, go past 10,000 sales of GT-Rs in the US (since 2008 when it came out).   There will be GT-R owners, for example, who would move from the Nissan brute to a more exotic looking car, and for whom the Japanese origins are part of the appeal.

Cars of all  brands frequently need  dealer warranty service for niggling " this and thats" when new   , prob more so in the first 6 months with a limited production specialty vehicle like the 570S  .........Acura dealers are  in every nook and cranny of the US...but McLaren dealers ?  How many are there ..a dozen in the whole US ?

Potentially lots of flat bedding far away and you hope it comes back " fixed "

that's the " elephant in the room " of deciding between a similarly priced and market-target daily driver touching $200 k  TurboS, R8 V10, Acura NSX and McLaren 570S ...and this is coming from someone who can walk to the only SF Bay Area McLaren dealership from my home , which is actually 1-2 hours south of the city of SF itself, depending on traffic !

The 570S intrigues me as a car and I am fortunate that the dealer is closer than the Porsche, Audi , Ferrari and Acura which are 5- 10 minutes away by local streets  ......but I would have no interest if flat  bedding or even driving 2-3 hours across my metro area were part of the ownership " experience "

Agree - my closest dealership is almost 1,000 miles away (1,600km).  I wouldn't act til they add a (rumored already) new Denver dealership.

    Re: 2017 Acura NSX

The proximity of a dealer is something I never thought about since there is a McLaren dealer here in LA.  1,000 miles would be a deal breaker for me.  In the interim, McLaren should at least establish some "authorized" service locations for warranty work.

OK and while I'm at it, two more reviews in print form; the second from MT is very well done - Jason Cammisa gets to the frustration of the NSX being much more capable in its aggressive modes than the default settings that conservative Honda program into the car.  Sounds like all this is part of the myriad details involved in setting up a performance hybrid?  (and why the 918 took so bloody long?).  But if the Honda engineers are listening to this feedback, they still have ample time to tweak things before cars get delivered to customers.  Bottom line seems to be that the cars being reviewed are close to final, but not totally final, spec and setup.

There will be "Type-R" version coming soon.

Hence, the normal version caters to easier driving mode.
