As strange as it may look there was a reason. At one time The FIA required that all vehicles competeing in FIA sanctioned endurance events ie., LeMans, Spa, Targa Florio, etc., to have full weather equipment. In the mid 1960's when Ford, Ferrari and Chaparral raced at LeMans, they were required to have a luggage compartment capable of holding an FIA regulation size suit case.

You're right....in fact they also carried spare tires.
