WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

Porsche looked great at the Nurburgring, and I know many were unsure of their pace at a higher downforce track.  But, their high downforce package proved to be a winner as they finished 1-2 in P1 (and overall).  Porsche Team Manthey also went 1-2 in GTE-Pro, so it was a great result for Porsche at their home race.

That's obviously just a Porsche summary, but here's a COTA preview from The Checkered Flag.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

I'm looking forward to seeing how they perform at this track. It was very hard on them last year.

It's also a real shame about the race time for those of us on this side of the pond.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

Agreed, the race time sucks for us here. If the race started lunchtime on Sunday local time, it would be a great Sunday for us in this time zone: F1 GP Singapore in the afternoon and WEC in the early evening hours...

Overall, it is amazing that WEC is heading into the second half of their season this late in the year.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

Another great 1-2 start for Porsche this evening.  Let's hope they can translate their qualifying speed to race speed again!

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

Qualy was amazing! Jani was incredible. Now the real job begins.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

I think they showed Futch in the garage for about a second!

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

I'm gutted for the #18. Congratulations to the #17.

What happened to them (couldn't follow the race)? Again a clean sweep in GTE Pro as well, and a podium for our Futch! Smiley

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

They seemed to have an electric problem.  Interestingly, I found out that, per the regulations, the car must complete 70% of the race laps and cross the finish line at the end to be classified.

    Nice going, Futch! Smiley

Webber's move to WEC is finally starting to pay off.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

    Cheers guys,

A very tough race for us, especially for me with the heat. The conditions were really hard and the ventilation/ AC in the 458 is a joke.

A podium is good but yet another disappointment for us as we should have won but this time a battery problem made us lose easily over a minute.

After LM and Nurburgring, that's three problems in three races. And our Russians competitors have a clean run every race and now have a 35 points advantage. It's still possible to clinch the world title but it's gonna be very hard and require some luck.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

ACO and FIA (and constructors?) have agreed to modify LMP1 regulations for Le Mans 2016, capping engine power by cutting back on the available energy per lap by 10 MJ across all diesel and petrol engines. Expected impact on lap times is 4-5 sec, with 3.20 min per lap being the targeted minimum.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

    WTF!!!

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

I agree...especially given that LMP1 has produced such an excellent show this year (with cars whose breathtaking performance almost rivals that of F1 ) and both LMP2 and GTE are set to become faster from 2016/17.

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

Why do we always have to stop progress mail

Agreed the difference between LMP and GTE needs to close somewhat, but do it be releasing GTE instead of capping the public's favorite...

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

You have to look at both edges of the sword: I rather think they provoke progress by cutting the energy per lap. The engineers need to build even more efficient cars (drivetrain and aero) to win races and especially LM. That said, I think it will take about 3 years until the cars will be capable of the lap times shown this year again. The sport won't loose its attraction, as long as the pace of all cars will be at the same level.

The problem I see is that the cars will loose some speed on the straights, but almost nothing in the corners. To compensate this, the GT cars will have more power and bigger wings, so more downforce next season.

Won't that just cause them to lose even more speed on the straights?

Since the GTs will have a higher power output, the top speeds will stay the same or slightly increase despite the higher level of downforce.

WEC LMP1 cars to be given 1000bhp 'instantaneous' power limit

Re: WEC 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas

Power limit is only for 24 hours Le Mans

Yes, apparently so. Very poor initial reporting.
