I had a test drive in an M2 today.. Nice car, I have to say. Good-sounding engine, plenty of power, amd a nice compact package. I was a little disappointed that the options list is so short though - would have been nice to spec some Recaro seats and alcantara or better quality leather. I think the only real downside is the plastic door trim etc letting down the interior a bit. Would definitely be high on my list of sensible cars..

I drove one too the other day, driving dynamics are very good! It's a lot of fun and very nice package. However, it's also a pretty small car. I know as a sports car this shouldn't matter but i've already got my e30.. this feels too close to it in size. But it might be called the e30 successor.

I love how the M2 looks but as a fun DD over here in Bavaria (and Switzerland/Austria), I would probably choose the new RS3 or RS3 Sedan (if they ever bring this thing to the EU market). Drove the RS3 and this car is crazy fun, especially because it looks so harmless. The exhaust sound is just crazy, I still cannot believe Audi got a street legal certification for it. A worthy successor to my former Lancia Delta HF Integrale and I loved that car.

Don't really understand the need for AWD, if you've got decent winter tires and LSD, you should be able to use your car easily through winter. Regarding M2, the "Clubsport" (or whatever the name will be) is confirmed, with an actual M-engine (downtuned S55) with 400hp, should be a cracking car!

Ask my wife with her M3 Cab...we even put two(!) 20 kg sacks of sand into her trunk and it was still a pain in the ass.
A bit of an inclined road and you're done without AWD. No matter how good the winter tires and LSD.
Speaking of winters: I hate my Mini JCW in winter. Traction is horrible, even with winter tires. What a crap of car, never again.

If you only intend to drive around town and on flat country roads, then you don't need AWD. Throw the alps with steep inclines into the mix and you need AWD. I have passed too many RWD MB and BMW which don't make it up the ski resorts without chains. Never had an issue with AWD.
My old 997 S with new'ish winter tires and LSD did not make it up the steep hill where we live. Neither did any other RWD car. It was not fun to slide backwards all the way down, but watching everyone else doing the same made up for it
AWD for me.

I have a deposit for the M2 CS. Hopefully it is as good as i am hoping it to be! I have a RS3 and while I love the engine note and the overall drivetrain, it isn't too exciting to drive. With the M2 whenever I exit a corner the tail would threaten to come around. The RS3 has no such sensation despite the power. Heck, I find myself driving my i3 the most these days and find it more fun than the RS3!

I have driven my 997 2S now through 8 winters without problems . Even if a few times I just barely made it up my driveway . With a front engine and RWD I would of have to leave the car somewhere on the street .
These situations are pretty rare , maybe 3 or 4 times in 8 years, so , yes, one can live with RWD if you do not go regularly to the mountains with the car . But the few times where you get into a heavy snow storm , you are happy and relieved to have AWD .
With my 997 4S I used to drive on the fast lane on the highway during snow storms/snow covered roads. With the 2S , I can't do that . I have no problems but I have to stick to the slow lane .

DaveGordon:I'm not convinced of the need for awd unless you spend a lot of time driving around very rural areas. Decent winter tyres and its proper locking diff should be fine for 95% of the time. My Boxster was fine (and great fun) in the snow.
Agree, for most situations you are fine, but it is those pesky 5% which will kill all the fun in the end
Having said that, the difference in grip on wet asphalt between the S and 4S is quite noticeable. Flooring it in the S resulted in lost grip, instability and PSM intervention, while doing the same in the 4S meant full acceleration. If one likes to go sideways there is no question which is more fun.

I believe the 911 is superior over other RWD cars in this sense, thanks to the rear weight bias. Engine in the front, regardless if it is the front or rear wheels driving, is not optimal for steep inclines.

The 911 is an amazing RWD car, traction isn't really an issue. I only chose the C4 GTS because my wife drives the car as well from time to time and she feels more comfortable with AWD. Also, I kind of love doing crazy stuff on wet pavement and this isn't really healthy with RWD only, at least not on public roads.
Btw: Here is a nice video showing off the sound of the RS3... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGN6Fk1HfPo

I often do checkout Schmees videos and it's great content. But I'm getting sick of the "Hi guys I'm schmee" thing. About time for him to vary the intro phrase a bit
