    Running in

Sorry to bore you with a topic I'm sure you've read and answered a thousand times before...

I've only had used 911's before so I never had to go through the run-in period. What is the best way of running in a new 911 to secure best possible performance? My dealer was a bit shaky on the topic. Thanks.

    Re: Running in

Two issues are paramount: (1) Slow warm up and (2) vary the engine RPMs considerably.

You can drop #2 after the first couple thousand kilometers.

    Re: Running in

Thanks. No considerations on maximum RPMs for the first 1000 km?

    Re: Running in

Not really. I went through a VERY restrictive break in on two of my 911s and found that watching the warm up rules are most important. Porsche doesn't want you to break the engine when it's under their warranty. A neighbor of mine used to be a Porsche mechanic and he laughed when I mentioned the current break-in rules for the 997. I plan to break mine in over in Europe in a couple of months and I will be doing (1) and (2) during that time. I would probably avoid redline for the first 500 km, but then gov for it after that.

You can do a search within this forum for other opinions. It has gotten a lot of discussion for the last 18 months.

    Dan

    Re: Running in

Many thanks! I think I'd enjoy your running-in advice over Porsche's.

    Re: Running in

Do not warm the car standing still. Drive it slowly and let it warm up. Do rev it up high after a 500 miles and do redline, alternating RPM's after 1000 miles. Well that's that's my opinion and I have had gr8 experience with my cars and hardly any problems

    Re: Running in

    RTFM

    Re: Running in

Don't know if there's any truth to this, but it makes sense to me:

Might be a stupid questions, but why we should not warm the car standing still?

    Re: Running in

You should be able to search "break-in" and get a load of old threads that exhaustively debated this issue.

My opinion?? The manual is a joke, considering it's not even consistent from region to region.

A careful warm-up is always a good idea, and just be easy on her for the first thou or so. After that, you can gradually increase your aggressive tendencies, and grow into driving it like you want to. It won't break, and there's no little furry-footed break-in hobbit that leaps out of the exhaust pipe precisely at the moment the odometer rings 2,000 miles, and exclaims, "Alright, my work is done here...."

Break-in is a gradual process by which the further into it you get, the less critical it becomes.

Don't lose sleep over it, Porsche dealers sure don't worry about it when they're taking you for a test-drive!! LOL!!!!

    Re: Running in

When the car is in a gear and moving your crankshaft is well balanced and distributes the oil better and faster through the engine. While the car sits certain parts of the engine are dry and it takes a while for them to get lubriacated and get more friction.

    Re: Running in

Never thought of that while the car was stopped and it makes sense. I read the articles in the link you posted it sounds like the correct way to brake in the engine. Now I just want to make sure I get my car with less than twenty miles on it!!!

I'm picking mine up from the factory! 0.001 miles!!

    Re: Running in

Thats the way to do it

    Re: Running in

I would also avoid lugging the engine (running in too high a gear) - always a good idea, but especially during break-in.

    Re: Running in

Silver Bullet has a good point. I see people in the parking lot in the 1st gear driving like crazy all in on gear and fast without shifting. I picked up mine with 4 miles on it at the dealer in Newport Beach CA, I suppose one of the mechanics went around the block with it

    Re: Running in

Yeah my dealer told me the mechanic has to drive it for a couple of miles to make sure everything is O.K. then he has to go for a spin before he gives it to me. He told me not to worry that the thrill of thrashing a Pcar has long gone for them both and its just rudimantary (for lack of a better word). After reading the post I feel like telling him drive the hell out of it, but I wont.

    Re: Running in

I can assure the 911 engine is a tough engine and a few miles will not hurt it. I personally don't keep cars for too long and before 30K the car is sold, so it won't make any difference to me. I sold two Porsches with less than 5K miles.

    Re: Running in

As has been described on this site several times before, 1 Porsche guy builds an engine. They run it for 10 minutes to warm it up, then run it at FULL POWER for 10 minutes and then at FULL TORQUE for 10 mins. If it doesn;t make 100% or more of its rated power they take it to pieces. Running in? Sure. Don't labour it or thrash it when brand new but rest assured the engine is strong and most of what you or I will do to it is not going to break it

I totally agree so rev them up guys

    Re: Running in

Just wanted to say thanks for all the excellent advice. In summary I am understanding:
    - Warm up carefully and do so whilst on the move
    - Then make sure to vary revs - not getting stuck in a high or low gear
    - First 500k - no issue revving it up, but ideally wait until 1,000 before fully red-lining it.

Overall not such a big worry!

    Re: Running in

JFT at what temperature reading should you start this brake in process? How many miles do you have to drive before your car gets into safe operating temp?

    Re: Running in

My dealer told me not to worry about running in the car as it was run in at the factory and to just take it easy for one tank of fuel! I think I lasted about half a tank before I red lined it - 3000k later with plenty of burning rubber - the car is running like a dream BTW only got the car 3 weeks ago...
