    Ferrari crash at Road America

I'm posting this because I think it's a fascinating in-car look at a high speed crash. The actual crash was caught on several cameras, and the driver got out and walked away, which IMHO is a testament to the safety of both the course and the car. The car is actually airborne for over 400 feet! This shows what happens when too much air gets under a car at speed, and the lift overcomes the downforce.

    Spectacular footage.

Re: Ferrari crash at Road America

Just because you're faster through the corners doesn't mean you're allowed to block the guy that's faster on the straights even if, yes you're going to pass him again in the next corner... The driver of the black car should be getting a pretty hefty ban as it's a no-contact series.

    Amazing images !!

Re: Ferrari crash at Road America

Clearly this is an encounter of two drivers arguing who's penis is larger.

The driver of the black car should be suspended.

Re: Ferrari crash at Road America

I agree, he was getting ready to set up for the next curve to the left, which meant he had to go to the right and once he saw the car coming for him he swerved to the left. He definitely should be suspended.

Re: Ferrari crash at Road America

Wow that is a huge crash! But the impacts were minimized by the proper track safety stuff!

Exactly.  I don't see any reason for veering left other than to close him out, at risk of contact.  Though it seems that the red car does continue the overtake and add to the contact at least a little as well.

    Very nice video.  Great post.

It"s an unusual spot for a crash. If something happens there, they typical bang into each other within 10M of Turn 5's apex, not the descent down the hill, as was the case there. Typical speeds cresting the hill for sports cars are 200-250 KM/H. There is a huge amount of run off on the north end of 5, over 50M, and a fair amount of it is paved, with an exit road at the end. The eastern side of 5 is the best spot for watching, too, because there's typically a pass for position there. Road America is the greatest track in the U.S., according to Joerg Bergmeister, among others. http://www.roadamerica.com/media/wysiwyg/maps/CompetitorMap_2015.pdf

WOW - the video is made excellent, showing all different angles in the right timing.

What you can see is that the car didn't had a major "xxx speed to zero" impact. It was getting several hits while spinning and loosing the speed. Guess this was his major luck. The more time you have to reduce speed, the better it is.

    Anyway.... one lucky guy!

Smiley One very lucky guy. Like you said, the speed has been reduced "gradually", the driver should thank god (or whatever/whoever he believes in).

Actually the more scary the crash looks the more chances that the driver will survive. It is all because of enegry scattering. But when the crash has happened at the high speed with comparably lower level of destruction - that is bad... Remember Alan simonsen crash in Le Mans...

Right in front of me this weekend two kids in a SUV hit and pushed a car that got squeezed between the SUV and the barrier at 70mph. Two young kids were driving the SUV. Then they fled at very high speed, I saw both cars stopped a few miles further...
