Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    SciFrog:

Size you might be right but price it is in the upper segment.

That's not really the right way to look at it though. Price comes secondary to niche. Buyers first narrow down the type of car by need, then look at their price range. If you need an SUV, you can't go buy a sedan. If you want an EV, then ICE choice is irrelevant.

I personally don't think the S/7er/A8 are in the same class as a Model S. To me, the Model S competes with a 5er/E/A6, all of which can spec into a similar price range as a Model S.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Well we all agree they are not in the same class interior wise smiley
But it doesn't matter, Tesla sells 100k cars a year in the most profitable segment of all automotive manufacturers.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

We can officially debunk the P1's 6:4? something. And about 9secs faster than performante

    http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/a9937911/street-legal-mclaren-p1-lm-shatters-nurburgring-record-with-6432-lap/

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Well no, that said nothing about the original P1's lap time.

The P1 GTR, even after being converted to street spec, is still quite far away from a regular P1.

Until proven otherwise, the P1 will forever be slower than a 918 at the Ring.

Rumors were going around that it was massively faster than the 918.  Rumors were either 6:30 something or 6:40 something. Then you had Bruce Cannipa or something state that it was 10secs faster during a video he did.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

The original P1? It didn't go around faster than a 918 on a single lap. Best sector times, yes.

The best sector time was 6:47 and it was not even a secret up and down the Ring's garages.

The P1 is not a full time hybrid car, the e-motor only kicks in and help when the pedal is floored. So 90% of the time the car is a 730HP 3400lb car. Then the small battery means it quickly run outs of boost and had to sap engine power to recharge.

The 918 while heavier, benefits from the e-motors no matter the pedal position. One doesn't need to floor the car to gain the benefit of extra torque from the e-motors out of corners. The regen braking also helps in re-charging the battery in addition to using engine power like in the P1.

Not sure I understand: you saying the P1 runs out of e-juice on a single lap of NBR?

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    He does.

Still sector times mean something. Not every track is that long, so the P1 can shine for one hot lap or every other lap anywhere else...

Plus totally subjective but the P1 is the most beautiful between all three supercars. I very often see an orange/black P1 from up close and it is just stunning.

Not literally runs out, the ECU won't allow it. But The battery drains very quickly at full throttle and once it gets low engine power is diverted to charging instead of propulsion.

I don't believe the P1's battery can last the whole length of Dottinger Hohe for example.

It's a controversial look, thats for sure. But its a very ingenious purposeful creative direction.

At least he moved away from the polarizing joker face Smiley

Not saying the 720S is not polarizing for its looks. It is. And that design is super color sensitive. Really light colours set off the front intake nicely, and really dark colours hide it really well. The middle tones are the ones having trouble with coordinating with that intake.

At least some colours made it work. No color really works with the joker face, it's just too ugly to hide. Unless someone slap on a winter bra and cover the whole thing.

The 720s has def grown in me in design. To the point I am considering getting one next year. I think their design language is def heading in the right direction under Melville.

I would agree.  The issue with McLaren re. styling will always be how to marry such a strong focus on engineering, weight, and aero, with pleasing aesthetic design.  I always had the impression with the 12C and 650, that the engineers had the say up till final design stages, leaving limited design options for Mr. Stephenson.   With the 720S I have more the impression that design and engineering worked together, which is how it ideally should be.  Of course this could also be just having more time as a company to get these things right, with the 720 being really the second attempt.

Saw this on the PH thread about the P1LM and found it funny.

Some full-on Ring wars! Good for the customer.

Talk of the Aventador S SV / Performante on track to do ~6:30 in a few months. Puts the P1 LM track-car time in perspective.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

My wife and I drove up a good portion of the PCH this past week, from Temecula to San Francisco.  I convinced her to let me swing by the McLaren dealership in Palo Alto.  My fingers were crossed, but they didn't have any P1s or F1s.  It was still awesome to see all of the 570s, 650s, and 675s, though!

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    570S Spider

The two-piece retractable roof uses tech originally for the Spider variants of the 650S and 675LT. McLaren reports that the mechanism adds 101 pounds (46 kilograms) over the 570S Coupe, and this is the only extra weight for the droptop. Plus, there’s no loss in structural rigidity over the variant with the fixed top, and the convertible's chassis doesn’t require any extra components for stiffening.

When it’s time to enjoy the fresh air, drivers can drop the top in just 15 seconds at speeds up to 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour). The roof closes just as quickly.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Just stunning. Only 100lbs extra and no loss of rigidity. Porsche is 20 years behind with its GT car offerings.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

If you like the 570S, this is the car to get. Doesn't lose any lines of the 570S in the process. Really well thought out from that perspective. That said, I still prefer the GT.

McLaren leapfrogged the entire competitive set with its carbon tub.  Ferrari and Lamborghini have been playing in this space for decades and still do not offer similar tech at these prices.  Porsche also lags; I wonder how the 911 design would lend itself to a carbon tub?

The ability to offer lighter weight, as well as roadsters with minimal performance penalties, is a significant competitive advantage at this point.  Of course, all 3 competitors have the means to follow suit.

Rubbish.  It has elegance and lightness in its design - these are purely design characteristics, that many men can appreciate.
