    Australian GP F1

What a race. Disasterous crashes after disasterous crashes.

    First impressions:

Does anyone else concurr that JP Montoya is feeling the heat of his possible exodus from the McLaren team soon? Spinning out in formation laps is not a good way to put on a showing JP .

Jenson Button falls victim again to the Renault's explosive start. It's really hard to deal with those guys right behind you, because you're probably running light to get ahead of them on pole and they still pass you by the end of the first lap! The only success against the Renault launch is brass balls (JP/Kimi/Taku Sato) or team strategy (F-cars in Sakhir, albeit that only lasted for a few minutes).

What is going on with Rubens Barrichello?

Unfortunate end for the freshman rising of Nico Rosberg, getting clipped early. Also unfortunate ends for GC Fisi (the next Kimi!) Felipe Massa (this guy needs to calm down!)

    -------------
    Biggest winners:

Most glaringly it is Fernando Alonso who seems to be putting out the message that he and his Renault are the new kings in town

Second would be Ralfy boy. Who says little Schummy is just a product of nepotism?

Strong showing from Heidfield, whose BMW was able to keep pace and GRIP on a slippery track.

    -----------

    Poor showings:

Bridgetstone: the new season of Bridgestone, which was supposed to be revitalized by the resuscitation of tyre-changes yeilded one top 10 finish (Ralph). They definitely aren't showing up with their grip and ability to come to temperature on 2-3 pit races.

F-cars: mechanical failures again are not really the direction Ferrari wants to take. It would be best for them to snag up some points quick before Renault runs away with it and McLaren tries to have an onslaught of catchup. Worst of all, if Renault drops out of F1 following this season, they will be not have the "midseason stall" in lieu of preperation for the next season. Could be downhill for Scuedria Ferraro.

JP Montoya: Come on JP, you show us flashes of brilliance and courage but never really come through unless its in regards to quelling your teamate or a lame-duck race. See you at Torro Rosso next year!

    -------------------
Things to look for at Imola:

Strong showings from BAR, McLaren and Schummy as the high-downforce setup should slow down the blistering Alonso a bit (but probably not enough to keep him from the winners circle).

Bridgestone will hopefully make up some ground with their tyre temp issues. Temperature and percipitation will play a large role. Look for the F-cars to try and make a message?

    Until then

    Re: Australian GP F1

I've been wondering why Button didn't coast his BAR over the finish line but apparently he was instructed to pull over to allow Honda to make a penalty-free engine change before the San Marino GP.

David Coultard, a couple of races ago, had his engine let go after he crossed the start finish line, and had to love back 10 spots on the grid.

If I was BAR tho, i would have still taken the points, and then the 10 spot penalty!?!?!?

    Re: Australian GP F1

I would assume that their rational was that they could do more damage without the penalty, but I agree...Doesn't make much sense!

    Re: Australian GP F1

The race was really eventful. I watched it with a large group of tifosi at a local Italian club, needless to say they weren't too happy.

Alonso just ran away with it again, and no one could do anything to stop him.

Too bad for Button, especially just seconds before crossing the finish line.

What happened to Montoya before the race even began? I've never seen anyone spin out on the warm up lap.

    Re: Australian GP F1

Fisi got f*cked again. I cant believe what happens to him at Renault. I feel sure he could beat Fernando if given the chance.

Shame about Williams and also BAR. What the heck is with Rubens? I cant believe how bad he is doing.

I was hoping Button could stick it to Renault, but no. I kinda thought Fernando was kinda jumping the gun on the restarts.

    Re: Australian GP F1

Does anyone know if Dr Phil is OK?

I guess last year wasn't a fluke- Alonso/ Team Renault are looking awesome. Luck or no luck- the man is a heck of a driver! It was still a very entertaining race!

It makes some sense if you view it like this.

The best Button could do was pick up 3 points for 6th place, maybe less if he had to push the car as Brundle suggested in commentary. The fact that Reubens was promoted one place meant Honda, as a team, lost 2 points.

As San Marino will suit Honda better than Renault, the new engine, without penalty, could easily gain them more points than the 2 points lost in Oz.

I think it was pretty good thinking on the part of Honda's Technical Director, particularly given the split-second timing needed to make the decision.

    Re: Australian GP F1

One question, what Ferrari mechanical failures? I was under the impression that both drivers just botched the job by trying to hard with an insufficient package. Well perhaps Massa just botched it in general.

The sad part was that Schumi was actually putting in some fast laps, he was pulling away from Jacques I think it was, after having some dismal laps only minutes earlier and I would guess that was when he put in the 3rd fastest laptime.

Apparently it's because the Honda team reckons they have got a 'real' chance of winning at Imola - so it was a bit of a gamble! Let's just hope it's gonna be nice and warm on race day!!!

Well, I thought he could at least do second but after looking at their respective race paces over the course of the race, Fisico's was no were near Alonso's. Alonso was unbeatable by anyone.
Did you guys hear the rap Ficico's engineer gave him over the team radio "You are still 2 seconds a lap slower than Alonso. You have to push harder. This cannot be posible. You have the same fuel load as Alonso and you are lapping 2 senconds slower. This cannot be possible!".
Regardless, Fisico does not deserve this bad luck, he is a nice guy.

Who the heck le Ide loose in a F1 track?? the guy is a menace?? F1 is way over his head.

Button has finished over 100 races and still no victory

Did you guys see the face on one of the Ferrai engineers when he saw in the motitor that Montoya spinned the car in the warn up lap?? he could not hold his laugh Wonder who's door will Montoya be knocking next season cause it sure hell won't be McLaren's

To bad about Roosberg, the kid looks really promising and needs chances to show it so we can see him in a better team next year. Can you imagine Roosberg going to McLaren next year with Alonso? that would be great, that is one of the rumors floating around.

You're mostly right. Improper word usage. Massa got sideswiped and was done through KO.

Schumi on the other hand, we're a little less clear. Unlike Montoya's bowout, which was due to a safety overide, Schumi appeared to have lost control over the bump in the grass, causing the spinout/exodus. However, I think he and everyone will agree that he was pushing it a bit too hard and lost control.

Ross Brawn definitely thought the JP spinout was funny. Let's not josh him too hard. He can drive laps around us. Besides, it was probably the tyres.

However, I predict an exodus to Red Bull next year. It's almost a lock
