    Boxster Spyder (981)

Am i the only one interested in the new spyder ????Smiley

Just have heard from a p-friend that he sold his 964 WTL cab and ordered a new spyder for the same price Smiley

His WTL brought him 75% gain in only 1.1/2 year ....

Telling him he'll never be able to buy such car again, he said, he didn't like to drive it at all, and as an old school porsche he still has a 993 in his stable. (that one he likes to drive a lot)

He had a testdrive in the GT4 and was really stunned... Since GT4 has been sold out here he ordered a Spyder. (knowing it's a bit less hardcore, but still has the 3.8 and supersound, beeing a convertible)

    Not at all!

There was 991 Spyder thread on here in which the merits of the car were discussed and hotly debated. Smiley
Unfortunately it got swept away when the forum was given a late spring clean.  Smiley

But now you have just started a new one.  Smiley

No I'm sure you are not - but there is little interest for Boxsters generally on Rennteam, sadly! Smiley

Not for want of trying - but yes certainly enjoying our Boxster - the more we drive it the better it gets Smiley must get round to re posting some of the photos that got lost with the recent RT "event" - my life has had other priorities these last few weeks but normality - whatever that is - slowly returning....Smiley

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

this is just my opinion, coming from a big fan of the Boxster from day 1 and ignoring their roofs and drivetrains and incremental model series changes, but just from purely an emotional level visually, the 997.2 Spyder  is to my eyes mre charismatic in its many running configurations : top down , top up fully sealed, top up with rear  window / weather shield removed ,  side window shape ( with its straight downsloping upper edge accentuating the flying butresses of the fabric " bimini " top

the 981.1  Spyder  ,  because of its use of the std  rounded stubby side window glass ( therfore presenting the same side profile as any 981 Boxster , save the subdued vestigial roof buttresses ) and elimination of the separate detachable rear window/ weather shield  lost that uniquely sleek chopped and channeled  and " bimini'd " look of it immediate predecessor

I think in the future 20 -30 yrs from now ,  the 997.1 Spyder ( esp with manual gearbox and LWB seats ) will be the one and only " Boxster " collectors will want for that very reason , since contemopray  performance metrics means nothing in the vintage world of series production Porsche sports cars ....just look at current values of 930 and 993 Turbos , which can be handily outrun by even some sports sedans now

Maria looks better than that car! But probably even the queen in front of that car would look more fascinating angry

This Spyder doesn't do anything for me. The GTS is the much more stunning looking car. The Spyder rear looks like a Peugeot. But as we said - tastes are different!

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

Well, with the height of Maria in comparison I guess that a lot of cars would look proportionally "weird"... the Macan with Maria in LA also looked a bit funny... still, I think that, overall, the design language of Porsche has improved in recent years.

Maria aside, that blue Spyder makes me WISH Porsche wasn't daft enough to offer it without the PDK. If this thing had an automatic my pre-order would've gone in from the beginning.

Why would you prefer an automatic over an PDK?

I interchanged 'automatic' for PDK and vice versa - pardon the wrong, I'm aware of what the PDK is. Smiley

Point is, I wish the PDK was an option for the Spyder. I think it could've opened it up to a few more buyers who would've enjoyed the look of the car and used it as a more hardened cruiser compared to the out-and-out nature of the Cayman GT4.

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

I love the stubby short gear lever

the box (at least while stationary) is a delight, firm but tactile, while precise and feel some.

the pedals are way more offset than the RHD GT4 (they were perfect as the brake pedal lines up with the center line of the driver's seat) I sat in last week.

How would the pedals of a RHD 981 Boxster Spyder be differently aligned than those of a RHD 981 GT4? Surely the front "firewall" and pedal arrangements and seat positions for manual Boxster and Cayman versions are identical?  Smiley

the Sapphire Blue Spyder at OPC Mayfair is LHD, a S GO registered car.

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

In Belgium they're sold out i heared....

Still can' understand why the spyder isn't as special as the GT4 ...And yes, i know the technical differences between them, and am also convinced a normal person won't feel that difference while driving, except for more enjoyble soundexperience while driving open. Having the 3.8 , the brakes of the 991 and the more direct steering and shortshifter, i can't imagine this car wuold be dull to drive compared to a GT4 or normal 911

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

The Spyder is more special than the GT4 unless you go to the track. The sensations with the open top should overwhelm the GT3 suspension bits of the GT4... It's just that the spyder could be even more sensational and lightweight than what is offered...

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

It is the suspension "bits" which define the GT4. This does not just include different shocks, springs and roll-bars, but the entire setup with control arms, struts, joints and most importantly no rubber bushings. This why the car delivers so much involvement and feedback to the driver and why the steering is so direct and precise. The Spyder does not have any of these parts and will not have the same sublime handling, direct feedback nor precise steering. It will be more souped up Boxster S than GT-car. I don't mean this negatively in any way, it is just how it is. The same difference there has always been between a Carrera and GT3. Those who have driven both know what I mean.

Which one is more special is a different topic. Historically the GT-cars have proved far more special than anything else coming off the production line. The lack of GT4 suspension parts and the fact that the engine delivers 375hp (rather than 385hp) tells you which car Porsche considers more special. The 10hp detune over the GT4 is silly IMHO.

Obviously the absence of a roof on the Spyder will mostly make up for this (unless you are on a track). Sad that they did not offer the GT4 as an open top. I would have got that one in an instant.

You mean a Cayman GT4 convertible ??? Gottcha ! Smiley

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

Agree with blue lines.  These little suspension tweaks in the bushings and geometry are what give that analog feel.  The Spyder will feel a bit more relaxed which, for its intended purpose, is totally fine. Just a different design choice.

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

From chassis side the Spyder is almost identical to the Boxster with sport suspension.
It's only the engine (and the front bumber) that is shared with the GT4. Weight savings are marginal when the missing comfort option like PCM, AC, ... are ordered. Only a naked Spyder will save weight. The roof is only 10gk lighter than the normal roof. All ather weight saving come from leavin out standard options.
I don't know why people think the Spyder will drive a lot different than an Boxster. It's the engine which makes the difference to a normal Boxster (GTS).
It will be a great car to drive top down, but no GT4 from driving dynamics and feeling.

The roof is not isolated like the Boxster roof. It is only one layer. You see the hole roof mechanics from inside and noises from outside are unfiltered. So even with top closed it is a loud car (road noise, ....). Absolutly no daily driver.

Fully agree Smiley @ bluelines: while no rubber bushings (and other track oriented suspension parts) is a good idea on a track oriented car like the GT4, I don't think it's such a good idea on an open top car (even when it's a very sporty one like the Spyder). If you really want an open top GT4 just get a Spyder and let Manthey do some magic...Smiley

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

I'd have done just that if it wasn't for the Swiss Fun Police and their regulations laugh

Most of the bushings etc are still rubber, but less / stiffer compound.  Rose joints wear out too quickly for most road cars..  Some good info here:  http://www.elephantracing.com/tool-box/specs/991/GT3/991-gt3-suspension-overview.htm
