    Protecting the paint

    Hello everyone! This is my first post here. Pleasure to read all the great threads and all the 997 GT3 info. I ordered mine 2 weeks ago for Aug/Sep delivery!

    I am looking for your advice about how to best protect the color. I ordered the base black color (non-metallic) against the advice of my dealer who was recommending metallic black since it often looks better in the long run. I guess scratches are less visible. But I prefer the non-metallic look. So, I will want to invest in the best paint protection available. I know there are many different products and companies that do this. Which is the best?

    Just picked up my black 997 last week. I had a detail guy come out yesterday to do a new car prep with Zymol products. The car looks great, it has a shine and depth to it that is very subtle.

    Some waxes are specially made only for darker colors.

    Wax is not the issue. Learn how to properly wash your car and the black will get very little scratches. Make sure nothing stays on the paint surface (bird droppings...) for any time. Checkout http://www.meguiarsonline.com/ for information on how to wash and wax your car. A little care will make your black car stay its beautiful black.

    Can you easily apply the products yourself (like Zymol) or is it better to let a pro do it (chore aside)?

    I think you can do it youself, but if you are not comfortable, have a professional do it for you the first time while you watch and learn

    Many years ago the guy in the Porsche Club of America who won his class year after year with a black car finally told us his secret: He always put his wax on by hand,--no towels, etc. He used his HANDS. He later removed it when a baby diaper, doing it one section at a time.

    Black is incredible WHEN CLEAN but brutal to maintain!

    Unless I'm mistaken the key is to do the following (in the order listed), substituting the products of your choice:

    1) Wash car (with Dawn) using the two bucket method
    2) Clay
    3) Wash car (two bucket)
    4) Prep using random orbital buffer and wool pads.
    5) Wash car again (two bucket)
    6) Apply polymer cleaner (Klasse AIO), 1 or more coats of polymer sealant (Klasse SG -- 24 hours between coats for cross-linking to occur for sealants like Klasse) using foam pads for application and microfiber towels for removal.
    7) Apply carnauba wax for deeper shine using foam and microfiber.

    To maintain and protect a daily driver throughout its life, only wash by hand using two bucket method, prep once a year, apply polymer cleaner and polymer sealant every 6 months, and wax every 1-2 months.
