    Help, my car didn't start this afternoon!

    This afternoon, I was heading out for some lunch, I inserted the key, and turned on the ignition, the car made a high screeching noise and the engine didn't start I was like what the heck!!!! Took out the key and reinserted the key and turned the key, nothing happened, engine didn't start and no sound coming out of the engine at all as if it wasn't even trying to start Waited a few minutes tried again while pumping the gas pedal this time, after a few seconds of hearing the engine trying to start it finally started I am glad it finally started but what was wrong with my car

    Do any of you guys have any clue? By the way, I just picked up the car last week. It has only 90 miles on it so far and yes I did step on the clutch all three times trying to start the car. Any ideas guys

    I think the car was showing its displeasure at being only driven 90 mls in a whole week!

    Did you trip the immobilizer somehow?
    The standard theft alarm does not give off a high screeching sound, tho.

    Unfortunately it wasn't the immobilizer or else that would have been fine. The screeching sound came from the engine. Ahhhhhh.. what a disappointment and it has only been 1 week

    Just to clarify, was the motor turning over at all during the initial attempt? In any case you shouldn't have to pump the gas pedal under any circumstance while starting the engine. If I'm not mistaken there was another thread on this forum that stated something to the effect that pumping the pedal has no effect anyway since it's disabled through the ECU during the starting process. I'm sure someone else here can validate this info.

    The motor was not turning at all during the initial attempt. So far the car is starting fine. I tried it like 7 times during the last few hours.

    MHakkinen - By the way, I just had my car detailed by Moe. He did a great job and the money was well spent.

    A brand new car has (for lack of a better word) "burrs" on brand new parts and assemblies. So sometimes they have to de-burr themselves. You get a one-time f-up and then they never do it again. Sounds like maybe your brand new starter pinion didn't extend fully? If not a "burr" then maybe the battery is nearly dead (which happens to these cars alot because they draw alot of current while parked) maybe that can cause annoying problem like you described?

    If it happens again and it's not the battery then I'd get pi**ed and take it back for service.

    MMD, you are right, i think it is because it is still very new and not all the parts have breaked in properly yet. So far, I haven't had anymore problem starting the car. Still keeping my fingers crossed!

    sounds like a starter engine or a belt / chain problem. Take it into the dealer.

    Armchair diagnosis I know, but I would side with MMD on the starter motor pinion not extending and engaging the engine properly. Probably won't every happen again, but if it does, dealer should diagnose. And let us know!

    Always best to have it checked while you can, rather than wait for it to happen again. It's going to be on your mind so why not remove that stress factor as soon as possible?

    If it happens again, chances are you'll be at some inconvenient location, at an inconvenient time, far away from your OPC.
