This deserves a new thread but for whatever reason I am unable to start one. I don't understand I anyone can pay this much money for an "old" car.
What makes a Monet so valuable? It's just an old canvas at the end of the day. What makes a diamond so valuable? It's just a rock. Rarity? Sure. But none of these things has intrinsic value - it's only what someone is willing to pay. Personally, I'd rather have the GTO - at least you can play with it.
That being said, I've been amused by all the 'armchair experts' proclamations of the imminent demise of the collector car industry based on the fact that the most desirable collector car in the world failed to live up to the ridiculous hype...
You raise a good issue. My view is Ferrari today can build an identical car or several of them and each better in every way for significantly less money. A Monet or Rembrandt can be copied but never as good as the original. Only one person can create a masterpiece.
