How hard is it to change the steering wheel?

How hard is it to change the steering wheel? I plan on going to the thicker sport steering wheel and was planning on doing it myself. A couple of questions;
Does the airbag have to be disabled?
Do I need to disconnect the battery?
How does the center cover come off?
Any other wires or procedures I need to know of?

HI STEVE

do you have the round steering wheel from the S?
or the 3spoke from the standard carrera?

Changing within the same type i.e from round to round is relatively easy
and could even be a DIY procedure...
Although i would recomend letting the dealer messing with it.

Now if you change the type of the steering, i.e from standard to thicker S steering ANOTHER airbag is required and this raised the price much

I have the S model with a 3 spoke steering wheel.

yes but is it the round one? the standard S sports steering wheel or the one from the standard carrera? which one?

Apologies, I didn't know there were actually different 3 spokes. I have the standard S with the round center. Thanks.

then you can change whatever wheel you like BUT with round center so as to avoid the airbag cost.....you just pay for the wheell

techart has some high quality steering's ,alhtough i dont like the fact that it lacks the Porsche badge in the middle, kind of takes of the identity of the car

The steering wheel is actually a very easy DIY.

You probably want to disconnect the battery (I didn't) but you definitely want to take the key out of the ignition!

The first thing to do is locate the hole at the back bottom center of the wheel. Insert a small flat bladed screwdriver perpendicular to the wheel about 1 1/8 inch. Any further and you missed the wire you are trying to push. Once you feel resistance on the screwdriver, push about another 1/4 inch and the airbag will pop off the front of the steering wheel. There is a small wiring clip that must be undone and that's it.

After that, take a #55 TORX bit and insert it into the 12-point nut that holds the wheel on and unscrew it. The wheel comes right off. Before you take the wheel off, make sure it is centered!

The trim ring comes off the airbag after undoing four tabs. If you can keep your mitts off the thing, spray it with very light coats of Krylon flat black. Flat paints get their lack of shine because of texture. If you touch this part of you wheel frequently, it will get shiny. If you want a harder paint, you will probably need to get it professionally painted.

If someone can tell me how to post pics here, I'll post some that will explaine a bit better.
