    My Speciale

Just took delivery. Wow, what. a. car.

I thought the 12C sounded great, but this is on another level. Didn't take it up too high on the rpm but the tone/pitch of the exhaust has been lowered it seems as it sounded different than the regular 458 I have been in before. At low revs and little throttle it seems quieter than the 12C.

Vision up front is a tad worse than the 12C, nothing matches that view, but the back view the Speciale is a lot better, shoulder check view maybe the same but it's just different, in the 12C the cabin is small so I have a shorter sightline, here with the parcel shelf I see a lot more of the interior, something that need to get used to.

Infotainment system is crap. The screen is tiny and the buttons are not where your hands would go naturally. At least the font size is big.

Both cars are about the same size but my wife likes the extra room in the interior. She hates the fire extinguisher though, told her it's a a requirement as it's a Ferrari.

Pic and more comments to follow, need to go pick up son.

Congrats ! can't wait to see more pics. that'll be a good surprise for your son when you pick him up on it.

    Re: My Speciale

Echoing the congratulations of the crowd and noting that at least you now have something to keep you busy until the 918 shows up, after which this will no doubt become your wife's car, and the fire extinguisher will mysteriously disappear.

    Re: My Speciale

Very interesting what you said about the interior cabin is bigger than 12C.  Perhaps its the sitting position, and the centre counsol makes u feel 12C is smaller....  cause to me both cars feels somewhat the same....  Feel the same for the front and back view.  Need to know the differences of NA and Turbo of these two engines...  I am sure the sound is a lot better than 12C, that is only thing that kept me thinking if I made the right decision on the 650S....  cause even though this crazy fast 650S is FAST.... but how often do I drive soo fast that I try to kill myself??   I think its the engine sound that tingles my heart....  Anyways, please let me know!!

    Re: My Speciale

The cabin of the 12C is a bit narrower than the 458, there is a wide door sill from the carbon tub, so the 2 seats are bunched up in the middle of the car. In the 458 the seats are more outboard as it is not as 'thick' on the door side.

The 458 cabin also has more depth, there is a rear parcel shelf that starts almost at hip height, while in the 12C the rear bulkhead pretty much is at the back of the seat and the shelf is at shoulder height.

As for the foot box, I think the edge goes to 12C, the wheel well intrudes quite a bit into the foot box of the 458, plus the fire extinguisher gobble up even more leg room on the passenger side. The 12C foot box is not roomy by any standard but the 458 is worse. It might looked bigger simply because the lower console doesn't connect to the upper and seems like there is more room.

As for power, I think I am spoiled by the low end torque of turbo-ed and supercharged engines over the years, in the Speciale it just feels like it's lacking a little bit, almost like the engine is begging to be wind up. Which, is what Ferrari NA engines like to do.

On idle from the outside, the 12C is a lot louder than the Speciale, the Ferrari can be consider very civilized, not racy at all.

They produced different sounds, different pitch, so the comparison is quite subjective, I don't mind either, much prefer them over the Turbo S that's for sure.

    Re: My Speciale

Well the person who spec'ed it had great taste. Love the carbon. What's with the interior camera?

    It's a Leica S, most with 70mm f2.5, a few with a 120mm f2.5, I think I have one or 2 that was shot with a 24mm f3.5.

That one has a bird's eye view of the pedals and steering wheel, there is one more camera behind the rearview mirror facing forward. An add-on option for the onboard telemetry. Think of it as the build-in GoPro.

Haven't dig into the telemetry part yet, but I think it will trace a racetrack and sync the video footage with the track and combined them for a composite playback.

    Re: My Speciale

Wow, that's a lot more space behind the seats than I thought. Pretty practical.

Nice photos and good looking car. How's the road noise and suspension comfort on normal roads?

    Re: My Speciale

I believe a couple golf stand bags can fit back there, but some clubs will need to be taken out first like drivers and maybe woods.

Road noise, to be honest I didn't really hear much, as the engine exhaust pretty much got it covered, tire noise is almost non-existent, the Cup2 is a giant improvement over the PS2 in that department. Maybe it's the difference between a carbon structure and a aluminum one, but when little rocks get thrown inside the fenders, it has a less hollow sound than in the 12C.

Not going to comment on smooth pavements, but on broken pavements, going over pot holes, bridge seams, etc, it's a bit jarring on normal setting, i.e. sports mode, but if I turned on bumpy road setting, it smooths right out, dare I say the 2 settings are eerily similar to the normal and sports settings on the 12C.

The car is surprisingly civilized for what it is supposed to be, wasn't as hardcore as I was expecting it to be, it's a car I think I can lived with as a DD, while it has 2 less seats than my Turbo S, it's still roomy enough for what I need. Almost a perfect replacement for my Turbo S, too bad it didn't have awd. And it didn't have floor mats, which my wife hates as she is afraid the bare metal floor will ruin her heels. She loves the ingest egress of the car, night and day better than the high thick wide sill of the 12C.

One more thing, I think it drives better than the 12C on auto. In the 12C the software insist on keeping revs below 2k even in Sports mode, pretty much sneak in a shift or 2 or 3 at every opportunity, I find that very annoying sometimes. The Speciale on the other hand won't do that, even in part throttle or little throttle, it will hold gear till around 3k, and don't mind keeping the revs around 2.5k for the longest time.  That extra 500 rpm doesn't seems like much, but it's night and day different between a very drivable car or a very annoying car.

Ferrari makes the best shift paddles in the business, barred none. Big, beefy ones that stay in place and won't play ring around the roses with your hands. If only they incorporate McLaren's rocker paddles with it, then it will be PERFECT!!!

Call me crazy, but I think the 12C has a better steering feedback than the Speciale, I know I am still new to the car but I feel more of the road through the steering wheel in the 12C than the Speciale. This point I think is quite opposite to most of the car reviewers.

The seats are A LOT FIRMER than the ones in the 12C or the Turbo S, still very comfortable though.

    Re: My Speciale

Yeah, 12C paddles are too small IMO. Maybe so they can charge $4K for the nice, bigger CF ones. I personally would like bigger paddles as well, but I'm impartial as to whether they move with the wheel or not. If the wheel is turned such that the paddles are on wrong sides or out of reach, it probably means you shouldn't upshift.

Not that it's seen rain yet, but what happens in the footwells when it gets wet? Will it get slippery? Is there a little drain hole or something to absorb the water.

It's a bit too bare bones on the inside for my taste. I think I'd opt for a few extra pounds of carpet. I get the whole weight savings thing, but I don't really believe it makes any difference for the small touches like some carpet.

How's it compare exhaust wise to the 458? I never know if a 458 is stock or not when it drives by, but based on the videos of the S, I'm a bit partial to the 458.
