The Cayman GT4 will be manual transmission with optional PDK. Interesting to see the demand for manual on this supposedly focussed model.

We've heard that before.  Typically, what happens is that the vast majority of cars for sale in the States will be equipped with the PDK unless specially ordered with the manual.

Unlike the GT3, manual will be available on the GT4. This can only be good news for the friends of the stick.

Yes but as I have pointed out above, dealers in the States tend not to order manuals since most buyers request PDK.  Therefore, these cars will be difficult to find in inventory and the dealers, even on ordered cars, will be reluctant to have customer order the manual box.

I'll spec and order my own manual version and pick it up in Stuttgart, if they make it and I like the package.

I was told that by the dealer who had some visitors from the factory during this week. He told me that it will have the 911 engine and manual gearbox, with PDK as an option.

That sounds great.  Did he say which 911 engine (3.8L 400hp)?

No. Rumour is the 400hp. But as the GT4 introduction will coincide more or less with the 991.2, the facelifted 911 will get 430 hp.

The engine is (to me) irrelevant. It is the rest of the GT4 that is important. If it is not significantly different than the normal Cayman you might as well pick up a Carrera. So I hope the weight is trimmed, the suspension tuned, the PDK lifted from GT3, etc.

If there is less weight, it will be a very small difference.  No easy/inexpensive way to reduce weight in this car.  Things like CF body pieces (like RS 4.0) are too expensive.  Wishing for better PDK and suspension and brakes and seats seems more reasonable.

It may not matter to you, but many of us are hoping for significantly more power to better exploit the chassis.  And I'd love the characted of the motor to mimic the GT3.  Someone mentioned 400hp from 3.6L which would imply a redline well above 8k (and maybe a dry sump system like the GT3).  I would go for that!

If they don't lower the weight then 400hp is not significantly more power. Chuck out all the comfort options and electronics. If the rumoured pricing is correct then I expect some CF parts.

The PDK software they can lift from the GT3. The suspension bits and bobs too. For the seats and the brakes I would not hope for more than the current (soon 918) bucket seats and PCCB which are already available in RoW.

If Porsche is really serious about weight reduction, and it has in the past, it is possible to strip the cabin to the essential and lose weight without resorting to high cost carbon fiber.  Beyond closure panels, i.e., doors and hatch, there's really not much in the overall construction that can be readily replaced.

Well, 400hp would be a 23% bump over the Cayman S - that's significant.  You wouldn't fail to notice that (unlike the 4.6% bump of the GTS).

It never left my house (and many Porschephiles around the world).  Let's do our part and buy the manual if they offer one.

The same can be said about some of the vehicles at my house too.

My point is that at the current weight the Cayman S is only ca. 5% lighter than the Carrera S. A 400hp Cayman will feel like a 400hp Carrera Smiley Hence it will not be a significant performance difference compared to the Carrera unless they work on the weight too.

Removing the HiFi, A/C, comfort electronics, as a result of this a majority of the wiring harness, sound deadening, lighter wheels, lighter battery, more aluminium or CF and the GT4 could probably shed close to 150kg. With a suspension/geometry from the GT3 (preferably non-PASM setup) and 400hp in aggressive tune it will be a very interesting car.

Anyway, it is all speculation. Uninteresting. Let's see the car first Smiley

I have several criticisms of the 991 Carrera S, but straight-line performance is not one of them.  But I agree, more power is always welcome.  It's possible that we see a turbo-6 (shared with the facelift 991).  The extra torque would certainly move things along.  And 5% weight savings over the 991 is nothing to sneeze at - that helps (along with smaller dimensions and weight distribution - thought I love the rear-engine balance too).
