This kind of performance with this kind of fuel efficiency is a real surprise Smiley

    Markus,

Be serious. Data about fuel consumption are let s say it overoptimistic...

Performace are great but, for this kind of price tag I would not accept any less.

Kreso, that is not the factory claim... That is the figure posted by SportAuto! I,e, real life experience in the hands of tests drivers Smiley

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

Well... If you belive in it...

High reving NA engine screaming at full throttle at say it 320km/h on the autobahn and consuming about 11.5l per 100kms?

Despite very clever hybrid tech I have my very humble doubts in these consumption values...

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

To sum up: The first Horst von Saurma compares this experience with an old private pilot who has to fly a jet fighter for demonstration - concerning the risks. Then he talks about the predecessors of the 918 and some technical stuff like the hybrid powertrain that weights about 312 kg. He continues by talking about the several modes and how they deliver the power: “The acceleration attacks in Sport or Race mode with the electric-boost and at least half way charged battery are unbelievable heavy, so you think inertia was switched off in a mysterious way.” Sprint from zero to 100 kph was done in 2.6 seconds for 6 times in a row, with two persons in a completely fueled car. Zero to 200 was done in 7.4 seconds and 0-300 in approx. 18 seconds with tail wind and below 20 sec. in worst case. The nice thing with this car is to cruise around silent the other day without changing anything he says. All in all von Saurma admits that the 918 would be lighter without the hybrid components but this had killed the character of the car with its stunning dynamics and this huge range of usability and sportiness.

The 918 sets a new Supertest record in almost every category. IMO the most amazing one is the 0-200-0 kph test that is done after only 11.8 seconds. They explain that the 918’s electric engines brake the car in generator mode with 0.5g and charge the battery with about 230 kW(!), so even without the PCCB brakes the car would stand still after only 52 meters (some SUVs need about 40 meters for braking down from 100 kph). Unfortunately SportAuto was not able to put the car on a dyno because of its complexity. For the Nordschleife time they had 8 laps: Two to warm up, 5 with traffic starting with a 7:30 and decreasing it to a 7:15. Their final lap without traffic was the 7:13 - a really good lap time for a non works driver IMO.

Thanks for posting Boyko! The second article is the one from Auto Motor & Sport. It says almost the same thing as it’s written by the same author. As you can see on the fuel consumption figures this paper is the one for “normal” cars. Those figures are not faked I think, as they collect them whilst driving in cities and German roads limited to 100 kph (or 130 kph on the Autobahn for most of the time) using the full recuperation energy. (But nevertheless - only the stats you faked yourself are correct blush)

Anyway I want two things now:

    1) A 918 Spyder as this is the most admirable and desirable car of this century (or at least someone give me hybrid boost for my Fiesta)

    2) An iPad to read SportAuto the day before the paper arrives printed smiley

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

Thank you for uploading the test, this is great for those of us who can't get easy access to SA.

Can someone explain how the different modes work re the aerodynamics ? The 200 to 300kph time Of ~11.7s is slow for 887PS but I guess it depends what the CdA is during that acceleration run ? I noticed at its maximum downforce mode the CdA increases from a low of 0.69 to 0.82, this will effect very high speed acceleration massively

Maybe I look different at these things. i don 't really care about the advanced engineering. Sure it will eventually come down to the rest of the line-up and it will probably bring some nice technology, but for me this is not the definition of a supercar or hypercar as they call it. It's like the  959. Nice, but nothing that gets me excited. A hypercar is something that you dream about, that gets you excited, that you look up to and is not something that can not be driven by anyone easily. A car like the CGT.

Don 't get me wrong. I like the 918 as a car. It looks very good, performs extremely well, but it's not something I would dream about to own. Maybe it 's just one step too far in terms of technology for me or maybe I still have to get used to all this hybrid stuff to get slightly more excited. I don 't know.

The front motor disconnects above 265km/hr, so the last 35km/hr to 300 is done with only about 760 or so HP.

I asked Walliser face to face about that last month, asking had he ever consider adding a 2-speed gear box to the front motor to keep the extra 125hp for the last section of the performance envelope. The answer was a quick no and was never on the the table. He didn't want the weight penalty. He said that last part of the performance envelope is not a priority, it is a seldom used area and it's only good for bench racing with not much real world benefits. He much preferred to optimized the 0-200km/hr area as that's where the real world lives.

I can see you point. But making the 918 just an updated version of the CGT would have been most blasé.

So many of this type of car around already. My compliments to Porsche engineering for trying something different.

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

The "960" should do 0-100 kph in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 kph in slightly under 9 seconds and 0-300 kph in under 25 seconds. This should be enough to make those happy, who cannot (want to) afford the 918. Top speed is rumored at over 330 kph. Unless Porsche decides to play the facelift game again, where the first version underperforms a little bit, to make "room" for the facelift. angry This car should make those happy who expected a CGT-like 918.

To be honest, I do not understand the complaint: The 918 drives circles around the CGT, even the 991 Turbo S has a better straight line (and to some point track) performance than the CGT, so why would people complaint about the 918? Doesn't make any sense. Even if the 918 would weight 2 tons, I couldn't care less as long as I do not feel this weight and as long as performance is out of this world.

I would get a 918 in a heartbeat if I could afford one. Actually the only hypercar I really would want right now (LaFerrari and P1 are too flashy for my taste).

RC, in which bracket will the 960 be priced? 458 or Speciale?

I am sure you know already

As to the weight of the 918, so what? Since acceleration, handling and fuel consumption don't suffer.

The GT-R was the first to make the heavy car respectable.

BTW when are you scheduled to drive the 918??

918 is not more than 130kg heavier than P1 in real world...

That is very interesting, thanks for sharing your information.

Your man may be right about the acceleration not mattering over 265kph but ironically we had a McLaren P1 at our airfield vmax event last Saturday and he was "only" managing about 330kph at the 1.5 mile speed beams which is about what 800hp Porsches hit, fast yes but a little underwhelming for onlookers who expected the hypercar to lead the way but I guess that is a specialist area which will not be in the 918s bag of tricks...

I don't have a clue. I heard rumors ranging from 200k to 300k EUR but nothing really solid. Smiley At the beginning of the 960 rumor, there was word about two models (a base model and a high performance model) but now I hear only about one single product with a possible power kit upgrade option and various chassis and interior options. Not even sure the "960" got the green light but overall, I think this car is a go. Smiley

Awesome, sounds like as much confirmation as possible at this point. Will they pull another "CGT/918 stunt"? I mean, introduce a prototype out of the blue on an autoshow?

Porsche will show the 960 in concept form, once all the 918s are sold. This is my estimate.

I expect coupe and spyder versions like everybody else and eventually a RS.

I actually think that as soon as 918 orders start to slow down substantially, the "960" will be presented as a final product, not a concept. It wouldn't make sense to present a concept first and then slowly moving to the final production model. This could cost Porsche, again, lots of customers. People want to have the "960" as soon as possible, not in a couple of years. Also, I think it is time for a Porsche Coupe a la 928. Maybe with the next Panamera (or "Pajun"?) generation.

A Porsche Coupe with full sized four seats and an acceptable luggage room (similar to the BMW 6 series) would be really a very successful product.

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

960 will be priced at Aventador level IF Porsche decide to produce it.

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

I guess it will not share Hurracan/R8 platform then

And there would be space left for GT2RS

Re: 918 Spyder WS Pack-AMS Supertest!

So the 960 might be a 700 HP car!

I thought a Speciale rival would have been a more logical sales proposition.

An Aventador class car will be quite a jump from the Turbo S or even a GT2, with nothing in between.

IMO Porsche would be stupid not to produce such a high profit model, in whatever class, particularly as they could use components (carbon tub?) from the 918.

A single hint: Porsche won't put the 960 on a development platform they use for one single model only. Smiley Keep in mind that Porsche is "responsible" for sportscar development in the VW Group in the future.

Also, some of the 918 technology won't go to "waste". Smiley

So basically the 960 is the true successor of the CGT. The 918 was just a technology show. Works for me.

The main complaints about the 918 are price, weight and lack of exclusivity (vs LF and P1).

Yes, the 918 is a technology carrier and for the stuff it has in it, it is actually a pretty light car.

What does this tell about potential buyers or so called collectors? They do not care that much about the driving experience but about the value and perception of the car(s) and of course exclusivity. Not really my cup of tea.

I actually think that Futch is one of the very few LaFerrari owners who actually enjoy driving the hell out of this car. I know his background and his love for cars, so he is not someone who gets this car for his collection only. I wish I could say the same about other owners. Smiley The 918 shouldn't rot in a car collection, this is a car which needs to be driven.

You know, the only reason I sometimes really envy some of these billionaires shown on TV is for their ability to buy some of the most wonderful cars on this planet. I am a happy person, blessed with two wonderful kids and a loving wife. The only thing I lack in my life is the freedom to buy every car I would like to own and drive. I would drive each and every one of these cars on a daily basis, just for the fun of it. Unfortunately most of these beauties/beasts end up unused in a car collection in some warehouse or in someone's huge garage. What a shame.

That is what super cars are about. Exclusivity and possible collectors item. I say this because cars valued in this price range will rarely if ever be tracked and owners regardless of their abilities will be fortunately to extract 50% of the car ability. Essentially they are paying for technology they cannot use and never use. It sort of like buying a speed boat while living in a desert.

Sadly too at almost any level of wealth there is something else you want. A new watch, another diamond necklace, another supercar, bigger house, another house, a yacht, a bigger yacht, a plane... Unless you get close to being a billionaire, there is always something else. And when you are a billionaire, the game becomes simply to get more money and not about stuffs anymore...

Well I can't speak for others but all of you here has shared my thought process :) While the 918 maybe not have as much of the 'collector' status as the other 2, here where I live is a tiny car market so the exclusivity remains.

The journey started just over a year ago, I 'thought' I am at the last chapter but I guess Porsche has a different idea. The car would have been delivered this week had there been no delays. Like Warner Bros splitting up the last book of the Harry Potter series into 2 movies to extend the run, my last chapter has just been split by Porsche and I will have another chapter to go. haha.
