    Top Gear 918 vs P1

There was a huge debate with my friends on which will be faster around track on the next Top Gear episode (June/ July) .

I did the calculation and i figure out P1 has more power to weight ration plus Top Gear is British so they might lean toward the P1 and imo they arent' always honest . but the Porsche claim 0-100 in 2.6 where p1 0-100 in 2.8 .

    what is your expectation ?

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

P1 will clearly beat the 918 - muss less weight plus has it been developed on the TG track - that it's british will add reason for the comparison. However, NBR lab time I am still not convinced though....- but on 3-4 mile tracks I would even bet that the P1 is faster than the LF... yes

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

+1 - should be no contest.  It also has more aggressive aero than the Porsche which should help a lot in the faster corners.  McLaren must have tons of historical test data for this car on this track as well, so will be able to set it up perfectly.  Porsche will only have whatever setup time they get on the day(s).

Any advantage the 918 has off the line will be gone by the first corner.

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

It will be very close indeed.

918 has equal power, much more torque, 4WD, 4WS... Weight difference is much smaller than everybody expects....

P1 has better downforce and more recorded data on this specific track. But if it was such an easy "win", why McLaren refused to send a car to TG for this comparison?  And now the producers will try to find customer cars for this TG special...

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

I believe it is not as clear as everybody think. Weight difference is not that great as everybody think. Also, there are lots of rumors that production ready Porsche is not a car that we have seen during NB test and CH (and Sutcliffe) reviews. It is much faster...

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

British chauvinism... P1 would beat 918 setting a new lap record, period. The point is going to be their opinion according to the Porsche, let's see if it can face McLaren at its same level and that'd be enough achievement.

But TG review is not longer relevant as it was once; they're pure show more than ever. CH or Sutcliffe have gained a lot of relevance lately and have become the reference when you look for a technical test.

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

You might as well discuss whether the moon is made of green cheese.

Performance wise there is little difference between them. Driving around town neither one could get out of first gear. A few may see a track but that is only if the owner rents the track to let him experience about 50% of the car capability.

Most will be parked and waiting for the right time to unload the car possibly at a profit.

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

Why are people neglecting the La Ferrari in this comparison?  Is it not up to snuff with the others?  Seems to be on paper...

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

Even when I have a 918 incoming, I still believe the P1 will be the faster one.

918 is a street car that's a extremely on a track, while the P1 is a track car disguised as a street car. If the p1 loses on their own developmental track, that's would have been a huge blow to McLaren. It's not gonna happened.

I even suspect the P1 could be faster on Porsche's own Weissach test track, the extra down force means quite bit on a smooth track where it can go into extra low track mode.

The Ring is a different story, it's a demanding track, and it's not even close to smooth, the P1 might not be able to use track mode there and that means they will be giving up their one major advantage.

For me TG is pure entertainment show, so I really dont care if P1, 918 or Fiat 500 Abarth win that battle

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

TG is just entertainment at the end of the day ... after all, the bet is whether JC has to change his name to Jennifer or not :)

But FWIW, I think the P1 will narrowly win ... not because I'm British or because Top Gear is pro-British or anti-Porsche but purely on performance alone.

BTW LaFerrari was not included in the bet because it wasn't ready to be driven in Season 21 which recently ended.

I think the P1 is a more extreme track car but if I were thinking of buying either, I would get the 918 Spyder. It's a much more appealing all round package to me.

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

Another silly car comparison show by Top Gear, I would expect, as it is usually the case.

These are cars costing one million plus in EUR and I don't think people who can afford them, have been holding their breath for the verdict of Jeremy and Friends. Most probably, the TG programme will occupy people who write on the internet, a good number of which won't even see these cars in real life.

And what is the meaning of winning, in any context? On a drag strip, on a technical circuit, on Silverstone, on NBR, on an Alpine Pass, on Pikes Peak or on a transcontinental trip on wet roads, dry roads etc etc.? The parameters can be set depending on the result someone wishes for.

Another important element with this kind of purchases, is the aesthetic impact. This is totally subjective. Someone could hate the P1 because of its "bad sci-fi movie" look whereas someone else could find the classic 918 styling as too retro or even too old-fashioned. Who is correct? Both and no one.

Any wealthy enthusiast who is lucky to own such a kind of car will view his possession as the best and leave the rest to watch TV and argue forever.

It's entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less - as is debating the ins and outs of which might be faster on a web forum. I, at least, look forward to a few minutes of nicely-shot footage of two of my favourite cars being ragged around a track.

Jay Leno just announced he got the first P1 in the USA today (I saw one 2 weeks ago at the dealer near me and was gone after a few days - anyways..). Maybe he can give us some P1 v 918 entertainment soon... I want to be entertained - I also like cold hard stats too... indecision

Mclaren never announce nurbergring time so maybe they are still trying to beat 918 time

i don't believe p1 can beat 918 time and they never even tested the the 12C ?

12C is currently 4th behind Pagani Huarya, BAC Mono, and Ariel Atom 500 according to wikipedia.

This video shows that Leno (potentially) bought P1 as a form of promotion, and not like he made choice by himself

He bought one and this is his. There is a video with him testing one at the factory and indicating the color he ordered. He has a 12C and loves it.

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

    He also has a F1.

But then again he doesn't buy Ferraris, so McLaren become his brand.

Jay Leno is a also pretty enthusiastic Lamborghini collector. He keeps Ferrari's out of his garage so that rust and electrical gremlins can't appear and infect his cars.indecision

He was snubbed by the Ferrari dealer as I remember.

Re: Top Gear 918 vs P1

He said he hates Ferrari's BS. That was from like almost 10 years ago. His collections has over 100 cars and not a single Ferrari. He did say he likes the Ferrari from the 60s but he never follow up to acquire one.

TG was never more than pure entertainment and their car "tests" were to the automotive world what Fox News is to the news realm Smiley

CH, again, also has personal motives, preferences and even contradictions as of late. His words are also pure entertainment value only at this point.. we must consider also that he is getting paid... paid very well so as to word his reviews very carefully. He's also picking favorites and has a personal battle with Ferrari for example.

The pure NBR lap times hold much more weight than any of the above characters... but when is McLaren posting their time Smiley Smiley Smiley
