Re: 991 Turbo S vs McLaren 650S Spider Sport Auto test results

    AAHTT:
I thinks that's incorrect, the 650S like the 12C has something called an intake sound generator or ISG, to channel only the intake noise into the cabin, if the driver wishes to. it has 3 settings and it can be completely open or closed or in between. the intake noise basically comes from the engine to the cabin through a tube and diaphragm (not a stereo speaker), that can altered. it has nothing to do with the speakers or the speaker system. the exhaust noise has nothing to do with the ISG either. Most owners prefer their intake setting on the lowest, i prefer mine full blast.

    this explains is a bit better:   https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA https://www.google.com/patents/US201...ed=0CFIQ6AEwBA

Thanks for correcting . The salesperson, part of the management , which sat next to me for the test drive, told me that it was a speaker . I stayed speechless !  I knew it was not an ' artificial' sound but he did put it that a speaker was bringing the sound in the cabin . Maybe he just wanted to keep it simple and not explain it properly ( I hope so for him )

Compared with actual Porsche vision/strategy,  McClaren seems to be more focus on the driver...on driver experience.

We all remenber why Apple hás been so sucessfull with mobile products, starting with the iPod....user experiente has miles ahead of the competition ....

The real key to Apple's success, and this was said many times by the late Steve Jobs, is that they make products that they want to use. The user experience is, in a way, a side effect of this, although it comes directly from the fundamental principle that drives their product development.

Re: 991 Turbo S vs McLaren 650S Spider Sport Auto test results

I dont know the internal process to aprove a model to pass to production, but I'm sure the same things happends with every single model that Porsche delivers...they  want to use to !
The vision of Mclaren are quite different from the most of the "others"...that's why most of us, independently of our passion, are amazed with the product.
From the feedback that we have read here...almost everyone one that tested the 650S, if they had the money, they will buy it

IMHO Porsche needs a model above 911TTS, and much below 918...right now the strategy is in the middle range and below that..

as I said before, Porsche had become a brand that wants to produce for the masses...and IMO that is an error

Re: 991 Turbo S vs McLaren 650S Spider Sport Auto test results

An error that brings a lot of profits...

Re: 991 Turbo S vs McLaren 650S Spider Sport Auto test results

    let me rectify..."error" indecision

Re: 991 Turbo S vs McLaren 650S Spider Sport Auto test results

"The engine noise through the speaker is not '' fake'' in the sense that it is the real noise from the engine, but just brought into the cabin by a speaker !  I agree this should not happen on a car like that . It is ridiculous !! But maybe then can't find another way so that we can hear a nice engine sound inside" Smiley"

Easy... just check the SPORT EXHAUST option, if you want louder natural sound all the time. Personally, I want the option of enjoying a relaxing drive down the coast with my wife from time to time. Hooliganism is just a button push away!

That's going to be a little bit difficult. We've planned a short vacation from thursday untill sunday. It's a long weekend because of ascension day.

    SuzyF:

    Well said Reginos.

Branding the Turbo apart from other 911 models is the most stupid idea I've ever heard.... A 911 is a 911, no matter if it is a base Carrera or a GT2RS... The basics are the same.

there is a reason Porsche has always internally at meetings and in hallways referred to the latest 911 Turbo models as simply  " the Top " ones ...it is not meant as a referrence to its  looks, performance or subjectives ....it is for profit  per unit  !

lots of Porsche exec bonus checks are funded by TTS , and now also Panamera  Turbo S and Cayenne Turbo S buyers ,  whose owners experience MBZ AMG S model - like ginormous trade-in value plummet  right after driving a new one off the dealer lot.

4 years, Cayenne TTS only 40k miles, $143k MSRP, $50k trade in...

    4 years, Ferrari California 10k miles, $240k MSRP, $150k trade in…

    Same amount of money...

Panamera and 991 turbo probably even worse...

Panamera and Turbocharged is the worst of the bunch, you just have to laugh when you start adding options and end up with 200k+++ price tag for such an overhyped sedan Smiley

This is not a valid comparison. The Cayenne in your example has 4 times the mileage. I could just as easily, and perhaps more validly, claim, based on this "data" that the Ferrari depreciates 4 x as fast per mile driven as the Cayenne, and thus the Cayenne has a 4 x better depreciation rate. I'm not actually making that claim, though, I'm just pointing out that your "data" do not support your conclusion.

I agree that buying a Panamera Turbo S is like burning money (as well as any other big highly powered sedan),
but what's the sense of comparing it to a car like an Ariel Atom? Smiley

I'll give you 1 example, we've heard this crap a lot on RT and other forums, but when you line it up against a real lightweight car you begin to feel the weight difference, no need to talk about track results, which usually ends up with the PDK + PDCC wins no matter how much fatter the Panny is Smiley

Edmunds: The Panamera Turbo S is very adequately powered, feels incredibly light for it's size.

Re: 991 Turbo S vs McLaren 650S Spider Sport Auto test results

    JAMS:

There is no question that you can go crazy with MSO options and drive the price of a 650 up by $150k. On the other hand, the base car is VERY different from a base Porsche! Choose a body color and choose a caliper color and you are pretty much done, (with the possible addition of deviated stitching). BTW, colored stitching on the dash, doors and steering wheel (see photo below) is $490 TOTAL. Compare that to the $1025 Porsche wants for deviated stitching on the steering wheel alone! I wondered about the $1025 vs a flat $1000 but then it hit me: $25 for the stitching and $1000 for their coffers! I am VERY close to becoming a 'turncoat'... driving it again on Thursday.

As a 458 italia owner, I have always look down on mp4-12C which I think is not an original idea. Never like the design and the brand.

However, 650S is another story and I like the car from the Day 1. That's just my idea as a shopper in this segment. Because of the changed front facia, I think the car has a character now with lots of improvements and ballistic performance. Full alcantara interior is very nice, btw.

So, if I were you, I would pull the trigger. Smiley

The 981/91 are just not involving enough for me and not great value so I'm considering  a Golf R, 335i Touring, Alpina D3 Touring, M3 or Macan for daily use, plus an Elise or Exige for fun.

+1 for Exige part (V6 of course  Smiley )
