Porsche 718 - new entry level model

As you probably all heard Porsche announced a new entry level Roadster 20% below Boxster prices. The car will also be mid-engined and lightweight. It will be already out in 2016.

I think this might be the further progress of ruin driving luxury and the specialty of owning a Porsche. The myth of the 911 may stay on but if I can see the Porsche-Logo on every other car than it will be just any other car.

I'm so happy and so thrilled that other manufacturers are having gorgeous Sports Cars in the pipeline (Jaguar, Mercedes SLC, McLaren, Ferrari, etc.... lot of choices!

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

When one can look beyond the logo, they have reached the pinnacle of enthusiasm ;)

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

There is nothing wrong with cheap models as long as they don't water down the 911 IMHO

One of my all time favourite cars is the original NSX, and it never bothered me that it had the same badge as some rusty garbage driven by teenagers

I also think that cheaper than Boxster model would not work out well because when you pay for the badge,style,quallty... there would be very little in terms of engineering one would get for that price

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

Are you sure about the "718" name?

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but that number already has been used for a car, derived from the 550 somewhere in the 1960's....

Regarding the question if it is a bad thing for Porsche, i don't think so. Porsche is nothing more than just a German car manufacturer that mass-produces premium cars. Just like BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Yes the 911 has its myth, but that's become a little over-vauluated over the years I think.  Porsche has never been like Ferrari or Lamborghini and it never will be. The 911 is just a very nice sportscar, which is unique because of it's rear engined layout and because its base design happened to be timeless. So is a Fiat 500, Beetle or a Mini.... Not so special as some people want to make us believe.

I absolutely love Porsche, but not because it's so special and unique (it isn't), but just because I generally like the cars they make. I don't see the difference with 35 or so years ago when they introduced the 924 and later the 944.  Those were also entry lever sportscars. Porsche is jumping into a market where there's only one competitor at the moment, the Mazda Miata (MX-5) and that's not a bad thing IMHO. If there is one brand that can build true roadsters, then it's Porsche. See Boxster.....

If they make such car I would find it preferable to a Boxster (which has grown too much in size and money). Very exciting spec, Boxermotor with 286 PS (2.0 L) and 360 PS (2.5 L). Let's hope it will be generally light with an even lighter variant. I might consider buying such a car in basic form without too many extras as a fun car and daily runabout.

Lars, as to the Porsche-Logo and the rest of your wish list, may I comment that:

    • If you buy the Mercedes SLC (is there such a model?) its badge is again very common as it is on every van or taxi in your Bundesland.
    • Hurry up to get the Jaguar before they expand their range further (as they have been trying to do for some time now to stay viable) in case there will be more Cat motifs in your town.
    • But since you can afford it, get your Ferrari. But please be very careful (according to RC) to have it well hidden and very cautiously take it out of the garage in the small hours when your neighbours are fast asleep. No one should know about it. Ssshhh smiley

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

The tiny 718  RS / RSK racers from the late 50s are iconic and worth many millions now , some of the value being that they are probably the most beautiful Porsches ever

They influenced the orig 1993 Boxster concept, but because the company was in financial fits at the time, it unfortunately ended up the size of the 996 due to having to share most of its parts ,to be a viable business case...

Now that Porsche is raking in profits from selling family cars , I would love to see a very small and lightweight mid engined Lotus Elise / Miata sized true roadster backed by the engineering might of Porsche...a true descendent of the spritely 550 Spyder  and 718 RS

I 'll take mine with A/C delete  ( never use it here south of SF) and radio delete , thank you ! Even better if it has an option of a Boxster Spyder tent roof!

This one sold last year for $3+ million

    Tiny , a good thing :

    Hasn't Lars been joking?

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

Iit would be nice if it weighed 2100-2300 pounds like a Miata or Elise and came with a  NA version of the rumored boxer 4 turbo in the Boxster/Cayman

even if it shares some VW architecture in order to exist ,  we have seen what differentiates the Porsche versions  from their VW and Audi cousins - witness the Macan Turbo version of an Audi Q5 chassis nipping at the heels of a 991 around a track !

According to the German article it will be 1.190kg. Not bad. My old 911 3.0 SC was 1.090 kg and 204 HP. and it felt very nimble.

I'd like mine with  LSD, A/C (not climate control), simple radio/USB/bluetooth, manual windows and roof, good quality plastics except the seats. Transmission type? I haven't made my mind up yet.

IMHO isn't supposed to see Porsche going in the same way as other "regular" brands....a huge line up that could put away the "real" porsche customer...the 911 customer

    my 5 cents wink

+1. Agree with Suzy. Let's see what they come up with. Hopefully it will be more 944 than 924.

I'd go further - make it smaller than the 981 platform indicates and target 1090kg.  With small wheel/tyres, there would be no need for power steering then (well, keep as an option for the non purist types, along with powered windows/roof).  A manual roof that operates like the McLaren 12C/650S Spyder or that rotating Ferrari roof would be perfect for me.  As long as there is a choice of transmission everyone should be happy

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

Of course, the recycling of the 718 name is proof positive that our beloved Porsche is not completely a marketing driven operation, not an engineering driven one. Sad.

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

I will reserve judgment until I see something more specific/detailed.  However, the 981 Boxster is now  $70K USD w/ only a few options (easily reaching  $80K w/ just  a few more) and a much larger car than the original 986.  Porsche can call the new car whatever it wishes, but a $50K entry roadster based on the original boxster formula would be a welcome addition to the line up  in my opinion.

Wheels 17" tyres 205 front 225 rear. Too much grip is not always good.

I really miss manual soft tops. Unclip, throw behind and drive.

Boxster starts just over $50k, so this one should be just over $40k.

Same tire widths as my 911 - it should make it possible to steer without power steering (could be optional anyways).

Indeed! Capture the spirit of the 356s in California we read about and see in pictures and films.

After the Macan (no matter how good it might be for its purpose) something to get excited about.

I hope Porsche don't compromise the vision this time, like with the original Boxster

RC, Kreso ,or others with good info, any idea if this car would really receive the new Flat-4 before the Boxster and Cayman as the article claims?  Any other rumors about this car?  Would be surprised to see up to 360hp as claimed (seems that would be saved for top 981 models).

    Thanks!

would be great if it was Porsche's version of the MX-5 with much better and interesting dynamics, and significantly better power to weight ratio. a flat four would be awesome.

Re: Porsche 718 - new entry level model

i am interested in this car if it weighs 500 lbs less than a Boxster, is shorter by at least a foot or more and is powered by a normally aspirated high revving boxer  4 putting out no more than 250 hp

any more power, and you need heavier driveline components, brakes, radiators, tires, wheels and you are basically back to square one ...a Boxster !

I suspect manufacturers are  hoping the next trend in sports cars is a market for PREMIUM performing and experiential  small nimble " roots " ones like this , esp to balance corporate average fuel economy mandates .   The increasingly ridiculous other end of the market with million dollar price tags and 1000 hp drivetrains are only really " usable " in downtown London , Monte Carlo and Paris , IMO
