I also agree that those are two different cars... but then there is nothing else to compare this McLaren to in the current Porsche lineup. Incredible performance from both.
IMO magazines should first compare it to a Ferrari 458. Same layout, similar money, same type of usage.
Porsche claimed that 991 Turbo S is the benchmark.
BTW, normal 458 is definitely marginally slower then 991 Turbo S. Even 458 Speciale and Huracan can not stand against 650S, be it in straight line or on the track.
Fact is 650S is a benchmark sportscar. It is amazingly fast, both in straight line and on the track.
The Turbo S is the benchmark in a class of its own, that no true rivals exist IMO. All year, all weather, all road, city driving, highway driving, B road driving, bad road driving, more accommodation and luggage space, easy to see out of, easier to park, blends with the traffic everywhere, more socially acceptable.......and very fast.
The 650S is a supersportscar (by defintion exceedingly fast) mid-engined, extravagant looks, rear wheel drive and very expensive. Its natural rivals are the 458 and a RWD version of the Gallardo or Huracan, when the latter exists and perhaps a future version of the new R8 V10 Plus.
in theory you could compare anything with everything, for example a Carrera or better a Cayman with a Renaultsport hatch or a hot Ford Focus take times and draw conclusions. But this doesn't mean they are true rivals in the same class.
Furthermore, it is harder for magazines to get Ferraris in comparison tests, whilst Porsches are readily available to compare to anything from McLaren to BMW, Jaguar and even to Hot Minis!!
