Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Very nice video but I couldn't watch it with sound (office computer).

They used that drag strip in comparison with that Hennessey Cadillac but did they actually say how fast both cars were over the quarter mile? I assume they didn't want to embarrass Hennessey? indecision Also, the 991 Turbo S didn't use launch control in the video.

With all due respect, Americans just dont know how to make proper automotive reviews/shows. Their videos are so synthetic and "wrong" (I dunno how to explain this) smiley Maybe they are trying too hard....

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

MotorTrend just published their comparison of the GTR, 991 TTS, and the new Z28:

    http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/1403_chevrolet_camaro_z28_porsche_911_turbo_s_nissan_gt_r_comparison/

The Z28 wins with the TTS in 2nd. After their first track run, the Z28 came in last, so they reran after adjusting tire inflation and then the Z28 had the better time.  Optimum tire pressure or not, how is this possible? The TTS corners at least as hard, has AWD, more power, less weight, more torque, bigger brakes??? Does it all come down to tire type? Streets for the TTS, stickier rubber for the others? Also... given the difference in coefficient of friction between the Z28 and TTS treads, why bother adjusting for tire pressure at all? The Z28 already had the edge there. Plus if you really care about tracking your TTS, won't you put the right kind of rubber on?

OK, whatever, so the Z28 on its 2nd try had the best time. Then it comes down to other things like creature comforts, right? I guess not because the Z28 is more spartan than anything in this test.  OK, then it comes down to subjective things like what is the best "Driver's Car" (MT's name for that sort of thing).  Hmmm, well, last year the 991 S won their Best Driver's Car. And this year the 991 took that crown *again*... so serves to reason the 991 TTS with more of well everything ought to be an ever better Driver's Car, no?  Therefore driving pleasure must not have been in the criteria used here either.

    WTF

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

    Weird article all around.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

The article is CRAP. I get it...the Camaro Z28 is an amazing car from Chevrolet and yes, it is. In Germany, this car costs almost 100k EUR as a grey import, so this is no bargain. At 65k EUR or so, I would have probably jumped for one.

However: Despite the fact that the Z28 would stand no chance against the 991 Turbo S or the GT-R in straight line acceleration runs, the track performance is very much related to the proper tires. The Pirelli Trofeo R is the closest thing you can get to a slick for a street car, the Dunlop Sport Maxx the GT-R was running is no ordinary street tire either and the 991 Turbo S was running on stock PZero street tires. This whole comparison is just a joke, sorry to say that.

Again, I love the Z28 but what Motortrend is doing here is not serious car journalism. It is entertainment. If you like it...well... wink

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

They neglected to mention that not only the Camaro Z28 is on Trefeo R, it's 305/30 all around... even the front! I guess that might explain the lack of understeer, but what about tramlining? Despite that, it's no more than 0.5 second faster than the GTR or turbo S.. to be fair it's also a lot cheaper

In Germany, the Z28 (grey import since it isn't officially available) costs as much as a GT-R, so...not really cheaper.

I would also love to see the Z28 in rain, in snow (not a problem in Australia I guess Smiley) and under daily driver driving conditions like heavy traffic and bumper to bumper rolling for an hour or two.

I understand the comparison between the Turbo S and the GT-R (even if straight line performance difference is huge...over 6 seconds from 0-200 kph/125 mph) but not the one with the Z28.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

The Z28 is built around a single focus of being a track special and not an absolute great all round sport car like the TTS. The comparison is just silly.

You guys are easily impressed by videos, especially those posted/made by car manufacturers without any certification (yes, the Nuerburgring offers "official" record times certification) and without knowing the setup of the car.

I wish Porsche would do the same, they could easily do 7:15 in the Turbo S with the proper tires, the proper chassis setup and some software tweaks. Smiley Don't believe it? Well... Smiley

Nowadays people are impressed by YouTube videos and so called "reality shows" (with a scripted story), so I'm not surprised. Smiley

Interesting summary (taken from AutoBILD Sportscars, one, if not the largest sports cars publications in Europe):

    Stock car 0-200 km/h (0-100 km/h) Top 20

    1. 8,82 s (3,06 s) - McLaren 12C Coupé
    2. 8,91 s (2,94 s) - Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

    8. 10,07 s (3,41 s) - Ruf Rt-35 Roadster PDK (991)
    9. 10,28 s (3,40 s) - Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera

    14. 10,75 s (3,19 s) - Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SV
    15. 10,80 s (3,30 s) - Ferrari 458 Italia
    16. 10,81 s (3,33 s) - Porsche 911 Turbo PDK (997)

    18. 10,86 s (4,06 s) - Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series
    19. 10,94 s (3,16 s) - Corvette ZR1
    20. 11,00 s (3,84 s) - Maserati MC12

The times are a little bit better than in other publications because they test on sticky asphalt and with the driver only.

I think you found emotion in my message that did not exist when I posted it.  I am not swayed in either direction by the video I tried to embed.  I merely asked if that video would fit your definition of the car being driven in rain.  I couldn't care less about the Z/28, or for that matter if a Turbo S did a 7:15 at the Ring.  All of those times are not relevant to the pleasure I derive from driving any car.

What is really interesting is how much faster the 12C is after the 911s advantage of 4wd launch has been erased. The 100-200kph can be calculated from the above as:

    12C @ 5.76secs vs  991 Turbo S @ 6.84

The 12C is nearly 20% faster for that speed bracket.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

What is impressive in the chart above is the GT2 100-200kmh time - 5.85 - beats the Lambo Ave (5.97) and is only behind the Mac by 9 hundreths of a second!  It may not have PDK but I bet it feels a whole lot FASTER than a new Turbo S behind the wheel.  The new Turbos 100-200kmh time is not impressive, at all.  It sounds like my 'old' Turbo might not fall too far behind in 100-200 run.  Here in the US quick acceleration is cheap - Drag racing is a fun and cheap sport at long as you run around 10 sec. in the quarter so for me the 100-200 time of 6.84 sec is not impressive.  That is almost 2.5 times longer for the second 100 than for the first 100kmh vs. 1.65 times longer for the GT2.  Like the car went to sleep after 100.  Porsche needs to inject a few more horses to do more than just jump out of the gate with the new Turbo.  Imagine how 'slow' the new Turbo S would be without PDK or launch control.  It seems that these two factors alone make up most of the speed advantage over previous models - Smiley

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Its clear that Porsche are holding a lot back with the TTS. Maybe because of the 918 or maybe because of the GT2/3 RS or Facelift TTS. While I love my TTS it's a bit of a let down that Porsche aren't trying as hard as they can in such a competitive segment.
