Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S

A couple of days ago, I decided to drive the RS60 to work, instead of my winter beater. As Murphy's law would have it, I caught the edge of a break in the pavement, which caused the edge of the rim to cut the sidewall of the right front tire.  The whole structure of the tire was sheared cleanly; the only thing holding the air pressure in is the thin liner (it feels thinner than a bicycle inner tube). What's worse, these are the original tires (less than 10K miles on the car); they are N1 rated and no longer available (current version is N2 rated).

So I've decided to completely disregard the N rating business and get a set of Pilot Super Sport. However, there is a complication when it comes to the rears (265/35 19). There are two versions available, a Porsche N0 version (although not approved for this application) and a Mercedes version. The tire vendor (Tirerack.com) recommends the Mercedes version. From the specs, I see 2 differences between the two: a) tread depth is 9/32 on the Porsche version and 10/32 on the Mercedes one; b) tread width is about 15mm greater on the Porsche version, with both measured using the same rim width. The front (235/35 19) are not specific to any manufacturer; they are listed as having the 10/32 " tread depth.

My question is, has anyone on the board faced this decision? What would you recommend?

The N-rated ones are for the front of a Carrera GT. I'd stick with a matching pair.

Hope you're prepared for a barrage of "stay with N-rated PS2" comments :-)

Whaaaat?! You plan on using tires with no N-rating. enlightened

Actually I finally put the Super Sports on my 987S (with 19" Carrera Classics) after several sets of N rated PS2s. Frankly, I think the SuperSports are more durable, and I don't perceive any performance difference. Tire Rack is probably giving you good advice regarding the Mercedes part. I purchased my set over a year ago, not sure what was available then though.

Yes, I used to be one of those manning the barrage.

Here's a picture of the damage. You can see how thin that inner lining is, which is holding the air pressure in, from the way the bubbles are bulging.

Carrera GT? Probably not the one to get. However, there is no matched pair. The fronts are non-specific, but the only two options available for the rear are "N0" and "Mercedes". I suppose the Mercedes version is likely to be least "specialized"...

Re: Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S

I would go for the version with a load rating closest to the OEM N rated tyres (94Y, I think)

Re: Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S

I would not put different type of tires for the front and the rears...

Re: Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S

    Thanks for all advice.

sfo: both versions of the PSS have the same load rating, which exceeds the load rating on the PS2 N2 (98 XL v. 94 SL).

SciFrog: this means I should stick to the generation-old PS2?

Re: Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S

agree with scifrog that you should have the PSS or PS2 all round instead of PS2 on 1 axle on PSS on another axle

Re: Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S

Quite a few people over on Planet 9 have real world experience of running PSS on Boxsters and Caymans - might get a bit more useful input there..

    Goes w/o saying. Thanks.
