Which Michelin Pilot Super Sport (265/35 19) for a Boxster S
A couple of days ago, I decided to drive the RS60 to work, instead of my winter beater. As Murphy's law would have it, I caught the edge of a break in the pavement, which caused the edge of the rim to cut the sidewall of the right front tire. The whole structure of the tire was sheared cleanly; the only thing holding the air pressure in is the thin liner (it feels thinner than a bicycle inner tube). What's worse, these are the original tires (less than 10K miles on the car); they are N1 rated and no longer available (current version is N2 rated).
So I've decided to completely disregard the N rating business and get a set of Pilot Super Sport. However, there is a complication when it comes to the rears (265/35 19). There are two versions available, a Porsche N0 version (although not approved for this application) and a Mercedes version. The tire vendor (Tirerack.com) recommends the Mercedes version. From the specs, I see 2 differences between the two: a) tread depth is 9/32 on the Porsche version and 10/32 on the Mercedes one; b) tread width is about 15mm greater on the Porsche version, with both measured using the same rim width. The front (235/35 19) are not specific to any manufacturer; they are listed as having the 10/32 " tread depth.
My question is, has anyone on the board faced this decision? What would you recommend?
