you are tecnically right I guess -- there are no "allocations". But there are at least 25 launch cars that will be here and in the hands of customers by the end of June. Deposits are taken, cars are pre-specced (I believe), and buyers will have production info in the next 45 days.

I placed a deposit for the 997tt in October 2003 with a dealer from whom I have purchased many Porsches. He is selling me his launch car (at MSRP). I did not spec the car, but it was ordered with the very features I want (black/black 6 speed with sportchrono, short shifter, locking differential, thicker steering wheel, adaptive seats, etc).

Ditto, I was able to spec my lauch car the way I wanted it; had to do it quickly though, and am paying no more than msrp. I was told that my car is an April build. Obviously, will get it July 8. Artic silver, sport chrono plus, black leather, lsd, sport shift, crests headrest, parktronic.

NO car will be driven by a customer before July 8th. Providing a customer with a car before that date could put dealers in serious trouble, even large volume dealers. They won't do it. First cars go to customers July 8th in the US.
There's another thing to it: since US dealers won't get many launch cars (each dealer one or two if they're lucky), they would be pretty stupid to give that single car to a customer before the launch date because they need the launch car for the launch show on July 8th.

It isn't about being worried, it is about being able to attract new customers. I agree that this may not be very important in the US where people just put down a deposit, order the car and if they don't want it, no real problem to loose a small amount of money. But over here in Germany and other countries, cars have to be ordered with a signed contract and if you don't want the car...a 20% (calculated from the value of the ordered car) penalty has to be paid, even if you don't take the car.
But like I said before, I think dealers worry more about PCNA and possible sanctions than about customers.

When i went looking for my launch car (which i found about six months ago) the car was pre-specd black black/ manual6/ sport chrono. When i inquired about it, (at a very very small dealer) they were willing to sell me the car at msrp, and i still had several days to add specs to it, i ordered every single carbon option available, and then i had the exzact 997tt i had been looking for. the car is an april build, and the second it gets off the truck i'm taking delivery of it. Side note to what Alan said on the sales/service team trying it out...the sales manager (who is a very attractive young lady) promised me she would tell me exzactly when the car was being delivered to avoid exzactly this, and she told me this w/o me bringing it up. Anyways, I seriously am freakinn out...i can't wait. Probably just drive the 2000 break-in miles right off the bat without sleeping.....or eating......or stoping for gas.
