Hello All,

I am thinking of changing from my 2012 PTS to a new S63. I have been a porsche driver for many years but I have to say there is a certain allure of the new S class. Namely comfort, toys etc....

My PTS is superb to drive and pretty much serves my needs however I'm progressively finding less and less opportunities to use the performance (apart from occasionally on the autobahn) and am looking maybe to compromise on the performance and move more to comfort/luxury etc.. hence the S63.

Also since my PTS was accident repaired during my second month of ownership, I'm thinking there will be a huge hit on its trade-in value.

Opinions and feeback are most welcome.

Have you driven a S63? Completely different car.

If you are even thinking about a Mercedes S class, a Porsche is (and probably was) completely wrong for you in the first place.

I had an E63 AMG, sold it after only 6 months. Had a C63 AMG Coupe, loved it but traction issues made me sell it too.

If you are looking for a fast and luxurious Autobahn car, get the S63 AMG. You certainly won't be disappointed.

However, don't even think about sportiness because the S63, despite the AMG brand name, is the typical S class Mercedes.

If I would have to choose a daily driver and I couldn't care less about my customers or social environment, these cars would be on my list: Porsche 991 Turbo S or Ferrari F12 (maybe even the FF up to a point...for the kids). My wife would probably love to get a Bentley Continental GT Speed Cab as a daily driver.

Mercedes S63? Well...it may fit Frankfurt quite well.

I don't know how old you are but I am 49. In the Panamera, I always felt 10 years older than in my 911. Just saying... In the Mercedes S class, I actually feel 20 years older. I love Mercedes, especially AMG but I would never ever get a S63. Rather a G63 or a even a SL63 but the S class, despite it's amazing electronic gadgetry, never. This is not the type of car I would enjoy as a Porsche driver, I want something dynamic, fast and...sexy. (my wife and her girl friends love the wide butt of the 991 Turbo S ...weird...actually thought this is a men's thing ).

The S Coupe looks all the money, if you don't need the rear space of the S Limousine.

When I was in my 20's and had a 911 my dad borrowed it to pick me and some mates up from the pub.  I squeezed into the back and it was not quite as comfy as an S class

Don't get a S class.Its just too much of a old guys car.  If you need a barge consider the Audi S8.

I am a big fan of the S63 due to the contrast between my other cars. I will replace my 750 with either a S63 or Tesla next year.

It is an impressive piece of technology but I would rather get the new C  class than the new S class. I hate to say this but even now, the S class hasn't quite lost the old guy with a hat appeal, even if Mercedes tries hard to appeal to a younger customer group.

I'm also not a fan of sedans generally speaking, I prefer SUVs and I've sworn I will never get a sedan again. Never. So boring and SUVs are much better in bad weather, they pack more luggage and they feel more safe. Yes, a S63 AMG is certainly faster than a Cayenne Turbo S but still...not my cup of tea, sorry. Maybe in 20 years...but I doubt it.

My friend is having the new S63. Superb luxury limousine - very powerful machine, handles perfect. As everybody said - still very limousine like!

Myself I would prefer the new S63 by far over an PTS - but I also drive limousine (7Series) and further on, the S63 looks milestones better than the Panamera.

BUT.... be sure people will ask you if you have an S or an C-Class, the cars are looking to much the same. As Reginos stated - if you dont need the rear space, have a look to the new S-Class Coupe!

The subjectivity of feeling safe is strange.  So many people say they feel safe in an SUV but  I feel less safe perched so high up. 

There was a recent study into this (one of the UK car mags reported it) and in an SUV you are less likely to have an accident due to the better visibility.  However, if you do have an accident you are more likely to be severely injured due to the high centre of gravity providing less stabililty and the SUV rolling instead of sliding.

It depends on the type of SUV you are driving. High performance SUVs don't roll often, even at impact. They have a anti-roll stability system which is quite effective, even in the event of an accident.

I drove the Cayenne GTS on the track and on the Riedberg Pass (highest road in Germany) in winter time. My speeds were quite impressive (to say at least) and the stability of the car was always amazing.

Most people I know don't have much experience with high performance SUVs, they may have driven a Cayenne Diesel (and no, this is not a high performance SUV) or a BMW X5 with V8 engine at best but thats it. 

Yes, a E63 AMG S 4-matic would probably be the better (performance) choice but if you really need the extra room and if you want good visibility (yes, it helps), why not go for a SUV instead? People usually have a false impression of modern high performance SUVs and I guess once they sit in the new Macan Turbo, they will be impressed even further.

Right now, if I had to choose a business car, I would either choose the Cayenne Turbo S or the Cayenne S Diesel. Of course these SUVs don't offer the technology the new S class offers and I love technology but the S class just wouldn't be the right car for me. I wouldn't get a BMW 7 series either but for example in Munich, the 7 series is kind of the Volkswagen of the rich and successful, so if you're working in the business...well...you kind of need to drive one (or the S class).  Never saw a banking or investment guy drive a SUV, usually they drive the 7 series or S class, sometimes maybe an Audi A8. A friend of ours, he does a lot of investment stuff, drives a Bentley Continental Coupe, another family friend has actually two Bentley Continental sedans for business related stuff (he has a factory producing chairs, actually one of the largest in the world). Privately, both drive different stuff, one drives a 997 Turbo Cab for example and they also have a Range Rover for the family. Typical stuff.

I dont have high opinion about "serious" businessman driving Bentley. Its too damn flashy and tells me that this guy likes nice things & he will do everything to afford them with my help

Well...it seems to be an image kind of thing over here in Germany. If you are very rich, you don't drive Rolls Royce or a S class, you drive a Bentley. We have quite a lot of Bentleys in my hometown but they are usually owned by very rich people, not your "ordinary" business man. Oh, we also have a guy who owns an older Bentley Continental Coupe, covered in matte grey foil with chrome(!) wheels, he owns two discotheques over here.  The car looks so pimped out, I kind of wonder how he doesn't feel bad driving it. I guess this goes with the business he is in.

I was not precise in my previous post. To be more specific, I cant see a guy with any flashy car as serious businessman who is ready to take a lot of his time to finish my job  I see them as a bunch of people craving to show their wealth through cars. Its great when businessman have elegant car for job, but on other side in his garage he is keeping some cool toys for having fun and not for business meetings. For example if some guy arrive in Bentley Brooklands for business meeting, he can have my full respect  That is true Bentley, elegant and very serious car. Same goes for Mercedes CL, Aston Martin BD9, and for Porsche 911

I don't doubt it!  And I agree that Porsche have  negated much of the effect with their SUVs.  But the videos of the Macan on track still look horrid with the amount of body roll.  The Macan interests me as a daily driver but traditionally,  I have preferred conventional estate cars.  Now so many are available with 4 wheel drive, they are more winter proof than I need living in south east UK.

You are talking about employees, I was talking about owners.  The guy with the two Bentleys owns one of the largest chair productions in the world. He is a family friend. The other guy in the Bentley owns one of the biggest investment firms in the region. Owners.

Have you considered the new S Class Coupe (S63 or S65)?  The S63 (only one shown thus far) looks sweet!  I wonder how it will drive compared to say a Panamera Turbo S?

The technology and interior is amazing... probably a step above the Panamera's...

Prices are dropping like stones over here... A used S500 is had for little over 20,000 now...

I just completed a test drive of a fully loaded s63. A different beast compared to my PTS as expected, however for town and 90% autobahn driving simply leagues ahead in terms of comfort. Definitely a little down on performance.

What I found interesting was that my PTS pulls stronger on the autobahn even though the s63 is more powerful

The wife loves the back of the s63 and that was actually a telling point since the PTS is not particularly comfortable in the back.

I would say out and out driving the PTS is aa much better sports limousine and the s63 is more of a compromise but I am looking for more comfort without sacrificing too much driving enjoyment. So I will probably go for the s63.

The coupe is not on the table since we need the 4 doors. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Definitely prefer sedan to an suv. Also high speed driving i.e 250+ on the autobahn will surely be better in a sedan than an suv. However In the future I am thinking of a macan as a second car...

The Cayenne Turbo S is rocksolid at Vmax and I really don't like sedans anymore, they don't have any benefit over a SUV. Yes, they (sedans) are accelerating faster because of the lower weight but so far, even with my Jeep SRT, I barely encountered a car which was faster and with my former Cayenne Turbo S (955), I really didn't meet any "competition". 

A high powered SUV is fun to drive because most people don't expect such a performance from a SUV, you feel different (kind of safer) in the SUV, you have a lot of room for luggage/kids/passengers and the higher seating position also gives you a better overlook over the road. Overall, I love SUVs and yes, they may consume more fuel than sedans but performance-wise, I really don't miss my Panamera Turbo S (OK, I have the 991 Turbo S but with the family, the Jeep SRT is my favorite car).

The Macan is nice for the city and for short trips but due to the lack of luggage room, not really suitable as a family SUV in my opinion. 

Btw: BMW offers a special edition M5 right now with 600 hp. Just saying...
