    2 observations from first drive in the rain with 997S

    1)Drove the S for first time in the rain. The rear end steps out under full throttle, 2nd gear acceleration. Time to sign up for the driving school.
    2)I am really glad I didn't opt for the rear wiper. The rear window stays absolutely clear when driving, even with a good downpour requiring the front wipers on.

    Flap,

    completely agree on the rear wiper, spoils the lines and isn't really needed.
    Thank god I didn't go for it either!

    I think the car looks better without it, but the rear window only stays clear when you moving along at a decent pace. In the winter, when traffic is much slower and the rain turns to a light snow, it can accumulate pretty quickly when your at a crawl. I opted for the rear wiper for that reason and don't regret it.. But, mentioned previously, the lines are better without it.

    Flap,

    Don't get sde tracked with the rear wiper issue (although I completely agree with you guys)

    Get the experience in the wet. PDE has a great skid pad. You will learn that the car can be controlled under wet conditions, and learn under safe conditions.

    I wasn't sure I'd done the right thing when I opted out of the rear wiper also. Glad to hear it's not really needed. Phew!

    Agreed. Not really needed in UK. Had one on 996 as standard and hardly ever used it. Couldn't see the point in spending money on something extra I didn't use. Plus of course the car is prettier without.

    Conclusion: No snow, no need for rear wipers.

    Going back to the point about traction in the cold and wet - yes, best to build experience gradually of what you can and can't do with cold tyres and wet and possibly salty roads. You can't be quite as heavy-footed in the wet and in-particular salted roads and get away with it, as I have been learning too!

    I agree. It's amazing how little grip you have on summer tyres until they warm up. Conversely when they are nice and warm it's surprising how much throttle you can use.. dirt, slime and salt permitting.

    I notice it most when leaving home on a coldish morning when I have to turn out on cold tyres onto a fast road not far from home. It really won't hook up until well into third if you give it the beans...

    I often suggest that rear wiper uglification can be mitigated by seasonally removing the wiper arm and snapping an aftermarket plastic cap over the remaining stud. Just an idea.

    No surprises

    Even if the back steps out it's amazing how far it will go before PSM intervenes - answer it's a LONG way further than you might feel comfortable with.

    Again road temperature makes a huges difference. Once you get below 40F grip on summer tires disappears. You can still drive but you can't push it.

    A PDE session is worth a good 10 - 15 hp in terms of the improvements it will make to your driving.

    I used to have rear windshielf wiper on my 2001 C4. Now I don't have it on my 997. I really do miss it sometimes !

    Not even needed in light snow as the rear defroster will keep up with all but the heaviest stuff...

    From this observation I'm guessing this is your first 911. 911s are always a little squirrly is those conditions. It takes time to know when to put on the power.

    Yep, first one. PSM works, yea that's it...I was actually just checking to see if worked...kind of like a test pilot putting an F14 into a flat spin...nope, no new guy errors here...997S test pilot. Now no-one else has to test it.
