Re: Golf VII R - short drive

Honda Civic R, anyone? Bit over the top, but I'm sure it's a quality product with great, modern tech.

Personally I love Honda products. Good engineers, good products, good prices. I love the diversity of the brand in general, not exclusive to cars. Robots, airplanes, cars, everything.

The Benz 45 by all accounts has a unhappy sounding motor and a non to quick transmission.

Just get the VW. Its easily bumped to 400hp for a 4dr surprise.

Indeed ABT, the 'semiofficial' tuner of VW just introduced the 370 hp and 450 NM version of the Golf R!

And as you habe certainly noticed Audi presented the TT 420 with a screaming 420 HP in Geneva based on the same 2.0 liter engine!

    420 Hp, that's 996 Turbo power, I think it's pretty impressiveSmiley

    Whoopsy:

I am tempted to order a new Golf R for a little run around car. So glad VW is bringing the new one to Canada, for some reason the Golf seems much less boy racer than the Evo or the WRX. Amazing value for around 40k.

I had wanted a A45 but since Mercedes is not bringing it to North America as the damn Americans don't like hatchbacks, this is my 2nd choice. Word is that VW is only bringing the 4 door over :(

Whoopsy, the Golf is much less boy racer than the other cars, (also much less than the merc 45) .  in fact that is it's big appeal imo! if you take a not too flashy colour, even more so in 4 door version, it really looks like any Golf to the non expert. If you olok closer though and know about it you can clearly spot the Mr. Hide..

So take the 4 door, much more practical and also more adult looking... Smiley

+2. Absolutely unbelievable. Hard to believe since "super" cars just 10 years ago had that kind of power. Heck, the 5yo 997S with X51 upgrade has less power.

Do I really need a "super" car when a hot hatch nips at their heels? Smiley

Fine for those in sunny LA - most discussing this thread need, or want AWD for the foul weather or winter capability.... Honda  to my knowledge stay with FWD.  Having driven both FWD and a good AWD, there is really no comparison.

I drove the CLA45 in Vegas last year and it was my favourite among all the AMG cars there. Even over the SLS or 507.

Some journalists may not like it but I love that engine and transmission combo. I just hate the sedan configuration. I have been giving Mercedes a hard time about not importing the A45, but Mercedes Canada said they can't do a damn thing as Mercedes USA prefer a small sedan even when most Americans can't fit in the sedan.

Can't you import one from europe ? We can import US cars, so you should be able to do the same, no ?

We are hitting a ''problem'' here . I agree . You will now see hot hatch with similar power as a 911 . The Gold R does 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 sec. That is faster then a 997.1 Carrera S !!

One will have to think hard if it is till worth it to spend 3 x the price of Golf R to get a Carrera for example ..... The driving feel better be worth 100k difference !!!

It is very difficult, until the car is 25 years old.

Mercedes never federalized the A. Plus lighting laws and bumper laws are different. Hell, even American market cars are different than Canadian ones apart from the mph-km/hr speedo. Our dinky government wants to show they have sovereignty, so they mandate a tiny little bit stronger bumper than the Americans. Some cars are made with the Canadian standard bumper for the US market just to simplify parts for North American markets but not all manufacturers do that.

Re: Golf VII R - short drive

I read that and it is cause for concern.  You can now get a vanilla looking new German car that accelerates like a recent base 997 (at least in commonly used speed ranges), so you might ask what will this trend do for Porsche used car values?  Not to say that the Golf R is equal in all categories to a 997, but the major factors of fun, acceleration and build quality can be had in a New Golf R and for less than a used 997. It might not have the panache of a 911, but its a well engineered fast car that has zero ricer looks.

I guess you could take the front bumper from the sedan but it would not work with the back one .....  Ridiculous these laws !

It was the same here about 20 years ago , but now our government has joined the '' general european  rules ''

For some it is a question of feel (something subjective and which a minority of people could differentiate) for most it is a question of brand image and brand loyalty.

It is the same with all luxury goods. Why do you buy a €30.000 watch when with €50 you are told the time and more accurately?

This is why Porsche should stop over expanding.  Because as the brand gets more and more common, fewer and fewer will be willing to pay the substantial premium. A Porsche owner is already trying hard to justify his expensive purchase by quoting very small differences in NBR times, Sport Auto test values and ability to drive daily through snow eyc. I haven't come across a Ferrari owner trying to explain his purchasing process, even with that brand's considerably higher starting prices.

Ridiculous is already a kind word haha.

But at least if a car is 15 yr old or older, it can be imported without restriction. The Americans on the other hand don't have such luxury.

However, if a foreigner comes to Canada to work or visit on a temporary basis, they can import any car into the country. Customs will issue like a visitor visa to the car and when they leave to go home the car goes with them.

Pretty embarassing for Porsche.  VW adds 100hp to the top Golf, but the Cayman and Boxster GTS get an extra 15hp...
