with the new GT3's problems with " old tech " , it's a brave or foolish 918 owner who will offer up his car to a " tuner " right now.
blowing up an overtuned engine is one thing, melting wiring or getting electrocuted is quite another , lol, from some of the internet posts about changing out wiring or boosting / hacking current capcity on the 918, P1, LaFerrari.

I understand your point, but I am looking forward to see what RUF can offer when it comes to hybrid model like 918 is. They have a lot of experience with electric powered cars already

until Porsche/VW group gets a handle on its current Tier 1 supplier problems, no one should be modding any new Porsche right now if it interacts in any way with the engine/ drivetrain, IMO

This information is quite surprising, as high level Porsche officials in Geneva said first customer cars to the U.S. would not arrive until early May. Officials said that even the first customer 918s for the world market were just coming off the line and were headed to Porsche family members and Qatar investors.
Perhaps the cars in the photo are headed to dealers, not customers?

Yes, these are final spec demonstrator cars, which have to generate more sales. They will participate this weekend's Amelia Island Concourse in Florida, as their first stop in US.
Actual deliveries start end of April, early May.

This is a thoughtful, and fair, article by CH. As a pure "driver's car" the P1 may be more exciting, and its styling is extraordinarily unique.
In Geneva, and elsewhere recently, I have been able to compare these two super cars in some detail. Some impressions:
1. While truly exciting and unique, the P1 design has a hint of "kit car" fragility about it. The body gaps are evident, and unless the car has a monochrome exterior, the differentiation between the body color and the under parts (bumpers, spoilers, for example) emphasizes a "pieced together" look. For example, i was able to study a bright blue P1 on the street next to a dark grey example, and the dark grey example was immensely more pleasing and integrated.
2. The 918 styling is more brutal, more solid, more evocative of well engineered endurance race cars. It has a stronger, more powerful appearance, and the interior is far more refined, even luxurious. On the other hand, one could say that the 918 is more of an evolution of the Carrera GT, while the P1 and its predecessor the MP4 12C are more unique and striking. Overall, I think the two cars reflect their manufacturers' racing history and approach. The P! is born from McLaren's F1 history, and is a lightening quick sprinter; the 918 is born of Porsche's dedication to endurance racing and reliability.
3. As a small company(2000 employees or so), McLaren is doing well, and is producing cars with extraordinary appeal and performance. it has also provided attentive customer service, and its cars are far more user friendly than the exceptional styling would indicate. Porsche both benefits from, and is hampered by, its extensive product range, but clearly Porsche has far greater resources at hand for research and development. Porsche is determined to achieve its "Intelligent Performance" goal in its racing and street cars, and this determination and accompanying resources should give the 918 buyer great confidence.
4. Anyone fortunate enough to own either (or both) of these cars, should be extraordinarily proud. The cars are different and exquisite on their own terms. Comparisons, while perhaps interesting to read, are really beside the point.

Maybe I might add #5. -- Unlike Porsche which has a bigger budget, McLaren is confined by it's financial status to build on the 12C platform. Imagine if McLaren has the resources to really build a bespoke halo car from the ground up, it will be closer to the F1 than the 12C.
