Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions...

My 987 2.7 is now in for the new roof replacement this week and luckily I got a 987 3.2S after the 911 last time.

I wouldn't have bothered posting but in the past I've said that the 2.7 Boxster and the 3.2 are quite similar. Now after a year of the 2.7 and a day of driving the S I can say that there is a significant difference and I feel a good reason to upgrade to the more powerful roadster.

I've come to the conclusion that a 997 at this stage for me would be too expensive and although an amazing car, the Boxster gives a good taste of the Porsche experience. The 2.7 I have is a great car but now after numerous problems with it I've been lucky enough to try almost all of Porsche's offerings and compare them pretty thoughroughly.

The 3.2 Boxster 987 is, I have to say almost the perfect Porsche for me. It's fast enough (a decent bit brisker than my 2.7), the gearbox is great (6 speed and ratios used are ideal) and over the 997, Cayenne and Cayman it has a soft top.

I've read so many negative reviews in the press about the sport chrono and although I would never use the chrono element, the agressive nature of the throttle and engine note is fantastic.

On the 3.2S, the brakes feel more instant than on my 2.7 - I know there is more surface area and the car has only done 22 miles but the bite is more instant.

Midnight Blue again is great - this time with non-leather Sand dash and leather armrests which is quite odd. It lightens up the interior but I can't help thinking full-leather would be better.

PCM is great, as is Bose but the telephone in this car would benefit by being Bluetooth. The 19" alloys looks great but the ride is much harsher than the 18" S wheels and steering requires more effort at low speed maneuvering.

After the 997, I thought I would have to save for years for my ideal car but today I've realised that a Boxster S provides most of the thrills of it's big brother without the bank-breaking expense and the option of a light tan when the Scottish sun comes out, something that a Cayman without a sunroof can't compete with.

I'm not taking any pics of the car though so don't worry about being bombarded with loads of shots. I'm just going to drive it this week and enjoy what is I think the best Porsche on sale today.

Thanks for taking the time to post, Steve. Good feedback.

Hope they fix your roof properly! So, when are you going to trade up?

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions...

Steve, I like your reviews as much as your pics

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions...

Thanks for your very detailed thoughts. Strangely enough wtsnet and myself were in Porsche Centre Bournemouth on Saturday looking at the Cayman and generally tyre kicking and must admit were a little bit tempted. But I hadn't driven my expensive Garage Queen for a fair while due to work commitments and the foul weather, but I had a truly great top down blast across the New Forest, really invigorating as only a winter top down, heater up fast drive can be. Just arrived at the Centre when the rain chucked it down and the drive back was roof up - and I realised that maybe the Cayman wouldn't be the best for me as I would miss the wind in what little hair I've got more than I would appreciate the better engine and slightly tighter handling.

Which is why I specified PASM on my 987S with 19" wheels. It is one of the most comfortable long distance cars I've ever owned.

What? A Steve R post without pictures? What is wrong with the world today!?

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions...

Well, I'm a bit photo'd out this week! I took so many of the 911 - 300 in total! One of them is being used for sure in the Porsche Club GB magazine - still can't believe it! Better get a better hit rate than 1 in 300 though

My car should be back tomorrow! Hope I don't forget the little black thing that you have to carry for the Porsche Tracker now - that would be funny!
Maybe I should lose it like they lost my keys last time When I opened the rear luggae compartment to put some shopping in, the front luggage compartments were in there! Then I opened the front compartment and the tracker had been fitted, all plastic removed and wires everywhere. The instructions were there too! At least it didn't rattle

Ahh, PASM... ....sadly missing on the service car. Combine that with the Sport button and away you go! You are totally right though - the 911 was on the same wheels and had PASM - very comfy given the rubber bands your riding around on!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

THANKS Steve for this short review
It's just what I have been saying all along, the 997 (S) is REALLY a GREAT car BUT you don't NEED it when you own A BOXSTER S. The latter is quick and powerful enough for normal road use, even if you have THE CHANCE to go FAST, AND let's not forget, it's TONS OF FUN, especially with the top down.
That's what it was made for, that's what it's bought for !!
All IMO of course (and in the mind of MANY others on this board I guess).

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

    Please take some pics!!!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

    Ok, some totally non-arty shots!

Got my car back now. New roof, now black roof lining too which is wierd and no rattles or other rubbish!!!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

Your photo looks more like it was taken in Ye Olde Trenton New Jersey than Ye Olde Scotland.

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

Yes, it's all gone mallsville here too!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

Steve, I look forward to your posts JUST FOR THE PICS! No, I like your comments as well! Give us a few more mate!

Here's one or two from me!

    My car!

    My garage!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

    Porky -

That looks like a pretty high tech garage!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

Love that garage!! Just bought a new apartment with 2 secure spaces for my cars! Would love a 911 to go in one of the spaces!!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

Its a very cool garage, can get 5 cars in the space of two (width) and two high. No nasty knocks and dents and saves a lot of space. Costs GBP 300.00 for each car per month though. Probably similar to NYC or London I guess but annoying all the same!

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

i don't know why. but the 987 really looks better than the 997....

Re: Boxster 987s - new loan car for the week!! Impressions..

I think the 987 has the nicer bum! The only thing is the standard 18 rims look a bit skinny compared to the 19" alloys of the Carrera - I heard that the 19's on the Boxster are very harsh...Steve, how does it compare with the 18" alloys?

Very different. The 19" look execellent in my view and really make the car. The difference is that the steering weight is much heavier - almost like non-power steering compared to the 18" alloys. The ride was firmer with the 19" alloys compared to the 18" and town driving is less comfortable. On the 997 I had with the same 19" wheels and PASM, the ride was firm but more comfortable than the 987S with normal suspension and 19" wheels.

I think the best ride and to be honest driving experience is with the 18" (not too exessive amounts of grip). The 19" on the S look great but are a bit too grippy and less comfortable in terms of ride quality in my view. Image over function maybe on the Boxster, but unless you drive the car to it's full potential or use it as a daily driver I don't think the performance benefits of 18" alloys would overcome the extra visual appear of the 19" wheels which really look the business!

So then what was more comfortable...BoxsterS with 18" and no PASM or 911S with 19" and PASM?

I have a Boxster (non S) with 18" and that was the most comfortable. The 911 C2 with 19" and PASM would be the best all round of the cars I've driven for a decent level of ride, handling and not too heavy a steering input (a big difference between the Box with 18" and 19" - maybe I'm just being a wuss!)
