    2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Spy Shots...

    (20 February 2014)

Porsche is already nearing the final stages of development on the GT3's harder-core companion: the 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. These are the first spy shots of the car in testing.

Spied largely undisguised, the new GT3 RS looks sinister in its all-back exterior, its aggressive aerodynamics and large fixed rear wing making it clear this 911's about business first--and that business happens at the track.

Visual differences from the standard GT3 include a slightly widened track to accommodate wider wheels and tires, a larger lip around the front spoiler, modified rear fender and bumper air extraction paths, and, of course, the much larger rear wing.

Expectations for the 2015 GT3 RS include weight reduction, extra power and responsiveness, and an even more focused chassis tune. The current 2014 911 GT3 weighs just 3,152 pounds--relatively svelte for a modern car of its footprint and capability--so the GT3 RS is likely to be at or just under the 3,100-pound mark if Porsche's engineers can shave more weight through use of more carbon fiber panels, a synthetic rear window, and a somewhat more spartan cabin.

A shorter final drive ratio could bring the GT3 RS's gearing into more track-suited ranges (though it will also lower the top speed slightly). The GT3's 475-horsepower 3.8-liter may grow more powerful, as well, though it may be tuned for greater responsiveness instead, perhaps through use of lighter internal components and/or a lightened flywheel.

It's not yet known if Porsche may offer a manual gearbox in the GT3 RS. The standard GT3 doesn't offer one, though rumors persist that it may at some point come with an optional three-pedal setup. The PDK gearbox in the GT3 seems like a natural fit for Porsche's most high-tech track machine.

Performance figures for the 2015 GT3 RS should slip just under the 3.3-second mark for the 0-60 mph sprint, and just over the 195-mph top-speed mark to optimize Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times--a key bragging right.

The 911 GT3 RS is likely to reach the market this summer as a 2015 model-year offering. Beyond the GT3 and GT3 RS, Porsche still has two more super-911s in the works: the GT2 and GT2 RS, which should become available in late 2014 and late 2015, respectively.

    Porsche 911 GT3 RS to get 500bhp...

Spy shots reveal new GT3 RS, due next year. RS will get wheels and tyres from 918 Spyder and levels of downforce to match a “race car”

Spy shots have revealed the new 911 GT3 RS undergoing testing...

    (20 February 2014)

The next-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS will be a "far greater step forward" over the current GT3 than the last RS was in comparison with its GT3 stablemate, according to a well-placed source.

As with the previous generation, the new GT3 RS will be both lighter and more powerful than the GT3 on which it is based, in this case the 475bhp, 1505kg  car derived from the current 991 series of 911.

However, the major step forward with the new RS has come with the aerodynamics. An extensive system of wings and spoilers, shown here in spy shots, means the car is already developing levels of downforce that make it "close to a racing car" far ahead of its global debut next year.

Currently the car is testing with a standard GT3 engine, but the RS is said to have an output of "at least 500bhp", eclipsing even the 493bhp of the 4.0-litre, limited-edition Porsche GT3 RS 4.0, which will make it the most powerful naturally aspirated six-cylinder road car engine produced by Porsche to date.

Additionally, Porsche has reworked the GT3’s suspension and fitted the wheels and tyres from the 918 Spyder, improving grip and traction.

Purists might have been hoping that the RS would provide an excuse to return  to a manual gearbox in the GT3, but it seems it will feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic like the existing car, although bespoke ratios are a possibility.

Given that the GT3 can hit 62mph from rest in a claimed 3.5sec, the lighter, more powerful RS should reduce this to the region of 3.2 or 3.3sec.

However, due to the added drag of its aerodynamic addenda, top speed is unlikely to increase beyond the GT3’s 196mph and might even be reduced.

Official pricing and details have yet to be released. The current GT3, however, costs £100,540.

What do you think are those lines on the hood and roof that we can see under the camo ?

I spotted those as well; running all the way from the front bonnet, over the roof, into the engine cover where they line up with the recession made for the 3rd brake light.

I'm sure marketing department will come up with some beautiful language convincing the world that it is for added longitudinal stability or so,... Though I guess it's more for aesthetics... looks very pretty though if you ask me! Smiley

Those lines concern me. What possible value could they add. Why would they change the shape of the bonnet and roof? This is a 911 and those parts should be standard across the range. Other than that the car looks great!

It could also be camo that covers up a recession like the 997 sportsclassic had on the roof... yes

Exactly! I hope not. We don't need sculpted lines on the car. The shape is a classic. Fender flares, wing and front aero parts are fine. Don't mess with the core lines please.

I would accept that bonnet Smiley However there is no roof in the 911 history that justifies a grooved roof. Sport Classic doesn't count!

The Carrera GT roof is grooved when closed with the panels in place.

The last RS had a lower top speed as well due to drag, same power though and same gears I believe.  This will be an interesting car.  Can also use the rear tires to Steamroll new asphalt!  What are those ?  335?

Both 3.8 and 4.0 RS models had lower gears than GT3 (but I thought 6th gear was adjusted to provide Vmax that was close to theoretical maximum).  3.8RS had 15hp more than GT3 and 4.0RS had 65hp more than GT3 - I was under the impression that the RS cars were as faster or faster than GT3 in Vmax...

Look at the inside of the rear wing tips - you can see what could be the actual wing tips in a curved form, and the rectangle ones could just be camo stuck on top to hide them.

The front aerodynamic add-ons look more interesting.  Note the boxed structure ahead of the front wheelwell-this is a variation of the front flicks, but also create controlled flow across the rotating wheel.  BMW has introduced a similar concept on its cars including the new X5!
