Engine sound of pre and post facelift

I have a 2005 Boxster and my sister recently bought a 2010 Cayman.

The engine sound of my car is much louder and much more impressive than hers.  All the other post-facelift cars seem to be the same.  The engine sounds much more docile and really tame, other than a sweetspot when you push it.

Anyone else hear this?  Or know why?

Re: Engine sound of pre and post facelift

Firstly, the Boxster is always more impressive than the Cayman... ;-)

The difference in sound is due to the DFI engine. It is a lot quieter than the old engine. It is the same on the 911 (i.e. if you compare a 997.1 to a 997.2 the latter is not as loud).

Do both cars have or lack the sport exhaust?

Also, newer cars usually are less loud because of sound emissions laws/legislations.

Ignoring the PSE, in this case I think it is more technical than legislation.

The sound is always an issue regarding sound emissions laws, I had a pretty interesting talk about it with Porsche engineers. They can produce the sexiest sport exhaust sound but they cannot certify it. Yes, limitations may be of technical nature but these limitations can be overcome but when they do, the sound is too loud at certain rpm or speed figures, so they cannot legally certify it. Best example: The new 991 Turbo/S. Great improvement over the 997 Turbo/S but still not perfect. The technical limitation would be the VTG chargers but there is a solution. Unfortunately this solution cannot be certified because the sound gets too loud. Smiley

How do third party aftermarket suppliers to it? Well...they have it much easier than Porsche to legally certify their products. The same is valid for small production figures manufacturers like Ferrari for example.

How come Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini can certify it and Porsche not? All these cars are much louder. Did you ask the Porsche engineers this?

Different technology (VTG chargers on the 991 Turbo/S are a serious technical issue for better sound) but more important, the other manufacturers apparently fall under a less restrictive sound emissions legislation due to smaller production numbers. In the case of Maserati, I am surprised myself (they have higher production figures) but I guess certifying a car in Italy is easier than in Germany. Smiley

    Yes Smiley

But strictly speaking I guess it should be the same certificate for the entire EU-area. If it is tied to production numbers then it is clear. The GT3 is louder though, but maybe specific model numbers matter for the certification.

The certification process is very complicated and Porsche really tried hard to give the 991 Turbo/S more sound, they were even working on an (optional?) titanium sport exhaust but this is all they could do. In my opinion they did a good )(though not perfect) job but they should have kept a feature which was planned but not implemented (apparently it was a bit too much for "some" at Porsche): The "blow-off" noise, something people may remember from older turbo charged cars. It was not really "real" but the engineered it into the car and it was very nice. Maybe they should offer it as an option. Smiley

This can be a bit subjective - I much prefer the engine sound on the 987.2 Cayman S to the 987.1 Cayman S

DFI engines are raspier and much more free revving than the pre-DFI engines

Re: Engine sound of pre and post facelift

They really begin to make some interesting noise when the IMS bearings get loosened up on the pre-DFI cars!

Re: Engine sound of pre and post facelift

The DFI injector ticking noise a low revs I do find worse than the old engines (irritating in town) and I'm not convinced that the 9A1 based engines sound quite as good as any of the previous cars-although its all a matter of taste. On idle all  Mezger engines sound like a bag of bolts with a few miles on them as do my Ducatis (which sound even worse on idle!) although under load both sound fabulous. Pre facelift IMHO sound better (given a like for like PSE comparison) but of course they do have their issues which appear to have been completely resolved with the new generation.

In any case the ideal sound is probably the bigger air cooled Porsche like an early 3.0 but I guess it would never get close to the regs. PSE helps new cars of course but they all lack bass!
