Night blindness and eye dryness immediately after surgery. Night driving had to be done with driving glasses (Orange Lenses) and are a must on unfamiliar roads or when traveling long distances. Work pressure, back in August 2010, complicated things overnight and I m back to prescription glasses (back to square one). Being diabetic (Since 2005) doesn't help either.

Why can't you accept the fact that some people want to use their car year round?

This is exactly what I do. I am a one car person.

Rain, shine, subtropical temps in July and Arctic weather in January (here in Chicago).

I'm tired of owning Ferraris and being able to use them only in fair weather,I want a car with top performance and usability year round and no Ferrari or Macca or GT3 can do it.

I do not understand why you claim that Ferraris, Mclarens and GT3's can only be used in fair weather. Just stick snow tyres on them, drive sensibly and all is ok as long as you have enough ground clearance. The clearance issue occurs with the AWD turbo S as well, it does not sit any higher than an F458 for example and you can turn it into a snow plow equally well (no front lift on Porsches I think, but might be wrong). But it is definitely not true that AWD is a must under inclement weather conditions. Surely traction is better for AWD cars but only idiots drive fast in bad weather anyway. BTW, I read somewhere the other day in one of the german magazines that the turbo S is very prone to aquaplaning (the argument was that the stock tyres are close to cups). I have no way of knowing whether this is true or not, maybe RC can chime in.

Certainly, Chicago winters can be very bad and snow is an issue but then the FF is most likely not going to cut it either.  In particular  not any of the 911 AWD offerings will get you easily through a Chicago winter with a lot of snow.

The FF can,I even pretraded my 458 and ordered one after driving a demo for almost a week.

:::::::(((((( A mistake that can easily be corrected :::)))

In the end decided that I could not and did not want to,live with that styling and most of all horrendous depreciation that car would have after I put 40k miles on it in barely 2 years.

Depreciation is an issue with all expensive cars. Where I live the GT3 fares rather well in that sector, better than most others.

Lambos and Ferraris were very good before the crisis, now they are rather bad as well.

Btw,you saying "Panamera's cheapo switches and buttons"???

Have you ever seen Ferrari switches?

Yes, I see ferrari buttons and switches almost every day. There is certainly room for improvement but at least the ferrari buttons don't feature on zillions of Carreras, Panameras, Cayennes, Macans and you name it.

You make a lot of strange statements here..........

You mean 'strange-for-you statements' I suppose.

If she was officially doing 62 km/h , she must of been at around 75 km/h on the speedo . Sorry, but if she drives like that in a 30 zone ( children , pedestrians, schools etc… ) she is asking for troubles .

I live here , have always had sports car, know many people with sports car, and if you know where and how to drive, you do not get into these kind of troubles .

She drives there every day and it is a 50km/h zone. But one day they opened up a construction site and reduced the speed limit. There are no schools, not even pedestrians. It is just money making for the state, swiss style. In every other country that I know it would have been 100-300euros fine.

Nope... In the Netherlands that would've cost her at least her driver's license + a court case.
She has eyes in her head, so she is supposed to see when the speed limit is reduced. The one that's driving is the one that's responsible. Simple as that.
Tip of the week: Porsche offers a feature that reads roadsigns and warns you when you are speeding Smiley

I never like it when I get a fine, but in the end, it is always my own responsibillity.
And yes... fines are very high in Switzerland, but everybody knows it, so a good reason to be extra careful.
Next time she will think twice when she sees a construction site, so it definitely works. A 250 swiss francs fine would be peanuts for someone that earns 30k a month, so that wouldn't have any effect.  Smiley

Happy to see this. Since it came out and when I saw the 'AMG pipes' for the first time I didn't like them, I really wondered why not round exhausts. Now I have seen them I would NEVER pick these round ones. Think I got used to them! RC, you still prefer these round ones? I can recall you did. Wonder if you prefer them over the standard ones.

This is a great thread with a wealth of information. I have a 2014 Porsche panamera turbo on order, due in around Christmas. My dealer called and offered me a 991 turboSlast week, but by the time I got back to him, it had sold. I briefly entertained buying both, but that would be pricey. Yesterday I got to see the 991 turboS in the flesh.....wow, what a car.. Thankfully I didn't get to drive it( had not been PDIed), or I might have bought it.  I'm thinking about the 991 turboS again, over the panamera, although the Pano might be better fit for me....4 seats and a small trunk. Advice??? :)

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

    TomSilver:

Just another word about the 'friendly' germans: a friend brought his 14y old son to school, with his Cayenne. One day, the english teacher saw that. From that day, the poor kid was constantly mobbed by the teacher. At the end they had to take the boy from the school because it would have seriously affected his graduation.

My daughter is on the same school. I always park the car one street further. That is Germany nowadays. Successful people must hide here.

Don't tell me about teachers. My daughter's last year religion teacher made several comments about my daughter's name (Grünberg), apparently he thought we are of jewish decent or whatever (there is a German town Grünberg btw. and the nobel price laureate Peter Grünberg, who is related to us, is not of jewish decent either). Why would a jewish girl attend catholic religion classes or even be christened? Smiley Anyway...no matter how good her tests were (she is a good kid in school), she always received very bad marks (between 4 and 6, which basically means between D, E and F). This year, she has a different religion teacher and she already got three marks. Guess what? 1, 2 and 1 (A, B and A). I was actually to school last year to talk to this teacher and he kind of told me in a very friendly way that my girl is lazy and doesn't prepare for lessons (which of course is BS, I know my girl, she has great marks in school) and when he said good-bye to me, he put a strong emphasis on my name, which I considered to be very weird (but I "got" it). He never said out loud that it is about the name (or a possible jewish decent), so I couldn't "nail his ass" (discrimination because of religion would be unacceptable over here) but it was pretty clear because even during lessons, he put a strange emphasis on her name, which her best friend confirmed. Anyway...this guy is no longer her teacher and everything is OK now but it was kind of a shock for me. I had issues because of my last name before when I was younger, even now I have people coming in my business asking if I am of jewish decent (I'm not but what does it matter?) but I never could have imagined that it would affect my kids, especially since they are fully integrated in the catholic community over here. I'm not a religious person and I have friends among ALL religions (jews, muslims, even buddhists) and stuff like that just makes me very very mad.

Then, there is her current religion teacher who tells the kids every day that the "rich" are filthy, that material things are not important at all, that everything we own should be shared with others and that modern technology is somehow an evil thing and we should find back to simple things in life. Smiley Sound familiar? Anyway, apparently this teacher is fair, she has these ideas and tries to communicate them to the kids but she doesn't discriminate the kids (she knows that my daughter comes from a wealthy family, she knows me and my wife from various meetings at school).

Now get this: The school principals released a note last week to all parents. Apparently even in the 5. grade (first grade in that particular school type) kids are "mobbed" because they do not own a smartphone. It is true, most kids in school have smartphones (c'mon, this is the 21st century) but they are not allowed to use them in school, Bavarian school policy. Only in case of emergencies they can use them (after requesting permission from a teacher) or outside the school. I can live with that. Anyway: Apparently some kids in the 5th grade make fun of others because they do not own a smartphone. Now the principal wants to forbid all smartphones in school, I mean completely. This is insane. So I need to buy my kids a 20 EUR crappy cell phone just because some parents apparently don't get their education right, so their kids make fun of others? Of course I'm not the only one opposing the complete forbidding of smartphones, so we requested that the parents of the kids "mobbing" others should be called into school, so the principal and teachers can talk to them to teach their kids not to make fun of other kids because they don't own the same stuff they own.

Seriously: I don't get this stuff. I tell my kids every single day that they shouldn't brag about their phones, house, vacations, cars, whatever because it could hurt other kids. Our kids understood and they are good kids, they shut up. Of course some of their friends know and brag about it "for them", which is always annoying but anyway, our kids do not mob others for not having what they have. My daughter even keeps taking her old phone to school, so nobody sees her using an iPhone 5S. It was HER decision, not ours and I am pretty proud of her, even if it is also somehow sad that they she needs to hide things from others.

We live in weird times and I think that sooner or later, school needs to address these problems in a different manner than just forbidding stuff and be done with it. This may be the easiest solution but it won't solve the real issue at hand.

Speaking of cars: I wouldn't dare to drive to school in my 991 Turbo S. I could "hurt" my kids. Not only teachers would be a problem but also other kids, who could start picking on them.

If you think this is a German thing only: I remember someone here in the forum driving in a Ferrari 430 to university in the US. Apparently one of his professors didn't take this lightly, if you get my point, so he stopped driving in a Ferrari to school anymore. I guess people are the same all over the world but unfortunately it seems that in some regions, they are more likely to act on their (evil) feelings than in others.

If you don't have kids and only one passenger, get the 991 Turbo S. The trunk is not big (however there is that special luggage piece which fits a lot inside) but you can always move the rear seats in a "down" position, being able to actually fit quite a lot of luggage in the back (I once drove to South France with two hard shell Samsonites in the back in a 996).

I don't see the point of getting a Panamera if you need one additional seat only. The back seats however are not really suitable for adults. My wife is 1.68 m, very slim and barely fits in the rear. The back seats may be suitable for "emergency" passenger transport in the rear but usually only kids below the age of 10-12 years feel comfortable in the rear.

RC, thank you as always for your detailed and insightful posts regarding both the NSA and the petty discrimination regarding your children's school and your alleged "descent".  You express yourself well, and your message comes through clearly.

Regarding the school issues, our son goes to a fairly large (900 kids) neighborhood school, and the rule is no cell phone use inside the school.  The kids and parents support this policy, as you say you do as well.  If someone violates the policy, the phone is taken away and has to be purchased back for $50 US.

About car jealousy or reprisals, I often take my son and his friends to school in our Cayenne Turbo S.  i can honestly say we get admiring comments and questions from kids and teachers.  Other parents and teachers have large SUVs--Mercedes, Ford Explorers, Lexus, etc., so we don't really stand out.  At least in our international city neighborhood, luxury type cars are mostly viewed as symbols of success or something to aspire to.

Yes they did. They said both were mentioned as risks in the information brochure which I didn't read. I was twenty one then, now I read everything before signing. While I wouldn't encourage anyone to do Lasik after my experience, truth be told that eye surgery has gone a long way since 2001.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

I had Lasik a year ago, and have had good results.  It has clarified my mid and long range vision, and slightly improved my near sight vision.  I was told up front that I would still need mild reading glasses, so I am not disappointed about short range.

Well, I hope so. I don't want people to misunderstand me. Don't get me wrong: The NSA works for the government and the government should "control" it in a way that the NSA employees cannot abuse their technical possibilities. People often forget that the government is actually them (or what they voted for). It is also very sad that all the international implications have been made public, this is something governments and international intelligence agencies should solve themselves within their organizations, it wasn't OK that it became public knowledge. I know the public doesn't understand this but there are certain rules in the intelligence community which are not to be broken and Snowden did a lot of damage to the whole community. This is also the reason why so far, countries like Russia or China haven't really commented on the whole Snowden incident or accused the US in a very strong way. Everybody does the same (in their own limitations and possibilities) but this is something the public shouldn't really know about. Smiley

Yes, I support not using cell phones inside the school but I also expect teachers and the school to welcome 21st century technology much more than they do now. I cannot understand why kids have to "suffer" through a 15 hours bus drive to England without being allowed to use a smartphone or a tablet. I also expect the school to actually teach the kids about the dangers of using modern communication technology, like malware because if the school expects to teach the kids "media competence" (this is how they call it here), they need to do that for smartphones and tablets too. My kids learn basic programming in school (which is pointless for school kids in my opinion) instead of learning how to use certain OS systems and to be aware of possible dangers (Java, Flash, malware, bogus emails and social groups/forums on the internet, etc. etc. etc.). Kids have to learn it from parents, which is difficult because most parents don't have a clue about this stuff.

Now you know why we want to move to the US. Smiley  Smiley

On the other hand, we celebrated (we had to postpone it a couple of times) my son's birthday yesterday. I drove in my 991 Turbo S, we went to a kart racing track and enjoyed ourselves, it was real fun. The kids loved the racing, they loved my car (everybody wanted to drive in it) and in the end, when we were sitting at a table eating pizzas, everybody agreed that we should do the same next year...and that my car should be there too again. Smiley Kids are different than adults...until they become poisoned by the ideological ideas of their parents and/or life and their surroundings. Sad.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Been away for a while and came back to an unpleasant surprise.

I mentioned before that my brand new Turbo S did a strange “toc-toc-toc” when the brakes were warm and the braking light.

I took the car to the dealer last Thursday morning and they still don’t know what’s the reason! :o They won’t give me back the car because it may be dangerous and I got a Cayenne Diesel as courtesy car!!! I already have a Cayenne Turbo and they know it. I want a 911 (or a Panamera), not a diesel!

Aside from the service level, how is it possible that after four days they still don’t know what’s the problem?!?

It’s like with the delivery date, until I started shouting nothing happened. They really make me work hard for everything. I like the cars, but the service here in Italy is abysmal. Audi was so much better. Not even comparable.

I’d like to briefly comment some of the previous posts, as I didn’t get a chance before.

I will skip commenting on Swiss speed limits, because I may get unpleasant ;))

More in general, IMHO, to comment on speed limits it would be necessary to know the real reason (i.e. ratio legis) behind the limit. Officially it’s always safety, but most of the times is something else entirely. If it was safety why not limit the cars (electronically) based on the braking range? It could be done car by car and not left to the driver's discretion. Just to make an example. Or why is it possible to buy guns and rifles in the US, but driving over 65 miles/hour is considered dangerous!?! Seriously, guns are safer than going, say 90 miles per hour? Obviously speed limits only seldom represent concern for the public safety.

Coming to the social issues relating to luxury cars. I have to agree with RC, especially when you have kids it could be a relevant issue. I’m not saying it always is, but I have the unpleasant feeling that it’s not getting any better (at least in Europe). Although I didn’t have - so far - any experience as bad as RC. A good friend of mine had a 911 Turbo and a Cayenne Turbo in Munich and switched the 911 for an M3 for business reasons (the Porsche was too flashy for his business), but never had problems with the kids.

And last (sorry, been away for a while ;) Panamera and 911. I drove for a few days the Panamera Turbo S and really liked it. It is much more comfortable than the 911 and very fast too. However, in my humble opinion as an amateur driver, they are very difficult to compare. In the city I find that the Panamera (I also drove the diesel and hybrid) is much more comfortable than the 911. Better suited. But when it comes to pure performance, the Pana cannot match the 911, not by a long shot. The power feeling I got from the 911 Turbo S was absolutely unique … if only I could have my car back!!!!!

    Till next one :)

Been away for a while and came back to an unpleasant surprise.

I mentioned before that my brand new Turbo S did a strange “toc-toc-toc” when the brakes were warm and the braking light.

Sorry to hear that, this must really suck.  Smiley I have no clue what the brake noise could be but it doesn't sound very good, especially incl. the fact that the braking light comes on. The only noise I have now (it is colder now in Bavaria) with PCCB is that infamous squeaking noise which sometimes comes on but it is already some sort of a trademark of PCCB, especially under lower temperatures. Smiley

A Cayenne Diesel instead of a 991 Turbo S? Oh boy. I get it, the dealer may not have many 991 available as loaners but I am pretty sure that he could have found at least ONE car for you. Well... Smiley

Keep us updated what the problem was, I hope it is nothing serious (sounds like something loose which extends during heat and starts hitting something) but your dealer is right, you shouldn't drive the car, it could be dangerous.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Just came back from a surprise visit to the dealer ;)

Btw, by "light" I meant light (as in soft) braking. There's no light going on.

It seems they are doing their homework. They've recorded the noise and tested the car in all possible conditions (I've seen the recordings). It's not the brakes. They think it's the transmission. It's been turned over to Porsche Italy that, they tell me, will immediately turn it over to Germany.
They surmise it'll be a big deal given the unknown nature of the problem and the type of car it's happening to.

They found a 4S to give me ;) I'll get it tomorrow morning. Still it's a long way from the Turbo S, but I get it.

The head mechanic told me that the 997 Turbo S compared to the new one seems like it goes half the speed!
They drove some 40 Km to test it under various conditions and they said they were amazed by how different (superior) the new 991 Turbo S was. They also acknowledge that it's not even comparable to the 4S.
Little satisfactions ;) I'm guessing they've had more fun with my car than I've had so far! :))

    Till next one

I mentioned before that my brand new Turbo S did a strange “toc-toc-toc” when the brakes were warm and the braking light.

That sound can be made due to the compound brake rotor (separate ring and hat) and the different thermal expansion of the two elements (Aluminum hat and carbon-ceramic ring)

That sound can be made due to the compound brake rotor (separate ring and hat) and the different thermal expansion of the two elements.  That is normal, but having the brake warning light on means that either the brake fluid or brake pads are too low (in most cases).

Sorry, it was my bad English. I meant that it makes the sound when I brake lightly/softly.

No brake light goes off. And they took the brakes apart and checked them meticulously. They are 99% sure it's not the brakes.

Apparently it does it even when simply slowing down, not even braking.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Looks like Nissan is fighting back at the new performance offered in the 991TTS with an improved GT-R with Ring time claimed at 7:08 (much faster than any current Porsche, save the 918)
