The fact that the car was a 996 indicates an amateur situation, most probably.

Very sad indeed and such a "stupid" death as a co-passenger (I hate driving with others at the steering wheel).
Yes, he may have coached the other driver but why in the co-passenger seat? He should have driven in a car ahead of him and tell him what to do via a two-way radio. Way too dangerous to drive with rookie drivers at the steering wheel. Also, the car seems to have been rented. I do not trust rental cars, even less rental race cars. You never know what the previous driver "did" with the car and if the car has been maintained properly.
So sad...such a stupid death, I cannot believe it. R.I.P. Sean.

My condolences to an obviously talented driver.
Unfortunately that is the reality for many race car drivers. To make ends meet, they often coach.
Though I do it for fun and to "give back", I've instructed for years, almost always in the passengers seat and it is a skill that takes a great amount of time to learn and is physically and mentally draining but rarely deathly dangerous. I would have to suspect, not knowing anything about the crash and purely speculating, that this was a mechanical issue. Pretty big impact though.
