Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

I’m attending next Friday to an driving event on Red Bull Ring with the new 991 Turbo S. Looking forward to drive the new Turbo on a decent track. I'll report back how it feels and goes. I know the track from August were i attended an X-Bow training so maybe some insight.

On the Porsche 50 Year Special last weekend at Salzburg ring there were a lime and a black Turbo S on display. Both colour wise don’t do it for me. The lime colour is ugly as hell, and the black is a lil bit bland. The Rhodium GT3 was a stunner. Also I got the chance to drive my 997.1 Turbo around Salzburgring. Really a nice and fast Track.

The day before i was invited to a McLaren MP4-12C Test day at Wachauring (a smaller Test track) also with the possibility to drive my own car before and after the event. I had my own instructor (Franz Wittmann jun. a pro Rally Driver) and boy had we a lot of fun. This thing just flys.

Maybe i get after the test drive next Friday a decision between the Turbo S and the MP4-12C :).

@RC: first two 991 Turbo S cars got delivered yesterday from our dealer to a customer (one for him and one for his son). This was signed by Porsche directly so it seems that very good customers getting the car before.

Well, maybe they just took the cars home and official delivery will be Oct. 5th. Smiley Dealers are paying hefty fines and face serious sanctions if they do not respect that. No exceptions made. Smiley If the dealer wants to risk it, well...his problem. Just do not post the name of the dealership. Btw: I got this wrong. Registration isn't a problem, the car can be registered as soon as the documents arrive at the dealership. Delivery is not permitted until Oct. 5th..

McLaren Munich sent me some special lease offers recently, highly interesting. You should contact them, I know the boss personally and if you say hello from me, he will surely make you a good deal.

Still not for me though...I'm a Porsche guy. Smiley

I don't get the embargo at all. Some 991 Turbo S arrived at dealers in Germany and other countries over a week ago, incl. customer cars. Personally, I wouldn't mind if someone is driving a 991 Turbo S a week or two earlier than me but according to a source, there seem to be people who take it very very serious if they get a car first or not. So maybe it is because of them that Porsche wants to keep a certain introduction date, when all first customers get their cars simultaneously. Smiley To be honest, I would be happy for everyone who gets the car earlier because I know how I feel...very very nervous Smiley and it doesn't really feel good. My son also already nags me all day long when the car is coming, he thinks more about this car than about school right now. Smiley

My wife says I should be happy that Porsche was generous enough to provide such an early car (it wasn't easy, my dealer is small and didn't have a production slot for a Turbo S that early) and I am very grateful but like every true Porsche 911 Turbo lover, I am very eager to drive this car again, especially since now it is mine (well...sort of... Smiley).

I am serious about the McLaren offer, just PM me before you go there (if you go there) and I give you details.

Is there a fail safe system for the Turbos rear wheel steering?  Each side uses a heavy electric motor and a very small belt to turn each rear wheel. What happens if a belt fails on one side ? Will the broken side mechanically recenter and if so will the non broken side correct it self automatically to match the other wheels angle?  Just curious.

I heard that in case of malfunction, for whatever reason, both wheels will go "straight" instantly (not sure how this works though). Same with the new active aerodynamics: If the front lip cannot "inflate", the rear wing stays down too and vice versa to keep an aerodynamical balance.

I don't see how one can tell much of anything from the wet conditions in that video.  Each vehicle's fittment of tires surely play a part on a completely wet track.

After I overcame my disappointment with the poor track conditions, it was interesting to see how the driver interacted with each car.  He seemed to be provoking the Porsche into tail-out positions any chance he got.  The Audi didn't seem to allow tail-out very much at all, or was too scary in previous attempts to put it on camera.  The Nissan seemed to be fighting back most of the time because the driver often ended up steering out of phase with the car's electronic systems -- I say this because of the under-damped, jerky finishing of a number of the steering maneuvers.

The Audi seemed to be the most fun and easy to slide aroung and drive, better engine sound too.  Porsche seemed quicker from all three, and Datsun is boring boring.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Indeed. Engine sound rank is: Audi, then Porsche, then Nissan.

The wet capabilities are interesting but a lot related to tire setup, as Mike already said. Can't wait for the test results (still hoping for some numbers today...).

991 Turbo S will smash them all, at least this should be the result. Both Nissan and Audi are almost Dinosaurs compared to this brand new Porsche product, and probably with 991Turbo S money you can buy the Datsun and a beautiful Boxster for the wife Smiley which I would never do, Datsun could have 900Hp and still wouldn´t be an option for me.

Re: OFFICIAL: 991 Turbo and Turbo S

Nissan missed a chance here. With a less "in your face boy racer look" (what serious guy in his 30s/40s/50s wants to drive in a "Playstation" car?), the GT-R could have succeeded. There were rumors that Nissan is re-considering their GT-R strategy, whatever this means. One source meant that Nissan will stop GT-R development, another source said that they are going the other route, improving the GT-R and making it more attractive for the typical Porsche/Ferrari crowd without asking a fortune for it.

I'm curious about the next gen GT-R...if there is going to be one. Same goes to the Honda NSX...very curious about it.

It's amazing, in Toronto I see more Aston Martins and Ferraris (by an order of magnitude) than GT-R's. Porsche's, it isn't even close. I saw two Carerra GT's last week downtown but haven't seen a GTR in weeks.
