Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

I know this isn't 918 related but remember that nice guy who introduced (track driving technique) the new 991 GT3 in that nice Porsche video? His name is Lars Kern and he is actually a test driver for Porsche. I drove with him in a 991 Turbo S and he never used the paddles once. When I asked him why he doesn't, he told me that he wouldn't be faster and by not using the paddles, he can concentrate much more on the driving itself and exploring the car's capabilities, which is more fun for him. While he was driving, I was actually more fascinated with the PCCB brake than the driving itself because we approached a certain curve at 260-270 kph a couple of times (track was short) and always applied the brake in the last moment, which was breathtaking, literally. Just imagine heading towards a wall at 270 kph and in the last (LATEST) moment, you brake and take a right curve at around 80-90 kph.

Using a stick slows you down and instead of having fun using stick, they have fun exploring the car's capabilities. Of course these guys have fun driving stick too (like I do, drove a 60 hp dune buggy lately in Spain and it was huge fun...with a horrible stick and a brake not even worth mentioning ) but modern cars offer other possibilities to have fun, you just need to be open minded.

Regarding Marc Lieb: He is the son of Mr. Lieb from RUF and a great guy. His father is also very very proud of him. A great talent, as he has shown again on the 918.

Since you mentioned Marc Lieb's father/son connection, you could also have done the same for Lars Kern. Smiley
He is a second generation Porsche test driver, as his father also did or does similar work for Porsche. Among other things I believe he was involved with the Cayenne Transsyberia Rally effort.

Did I read that right? The Porsche test driver said the car is faster in automatic mode on a track?

Yes, this is how Porsche actually "found" him. Later on, he raced in the Porsche Super Sports Cup...I think. What a wonderful person and with fuel in his blood.

Here is what my favorite auto writer had to say about the 918. His second to last paragraph is something for all buyers of the 918 should think about.

Seriously, unless you plan to track the car, given what you already own (TTS and 12C) you probably could better spend the money elsewhere. But that is the beauty of having money to spend. Often you spend it because you have it and want something.Smiley

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

And if you have the money to spend, performance cars provide immense pleasure.  A close friend is wealthy and absolutely loves and drives his fabulous cars.  He has a 12C now, a TTS coming in October, an F12 arriving in November, a 918 in January and a P1 soon thereafter.  Now that's wealth and passion...

It's true for every modern exotic car. Try to hit high revs in anything and you'll get going way above the speed limit.

Cars are officially too quick imo. It has become almost entirely irrelevant.

Such cars end up as mere posessions with no relevance as means of transport or even driving pleasure. But if someone  has the right wealth and is a fan of the automobile, why not? Such posessions are not judged by their utility by those wealthy enough to purchase them.

Similarly, what is the relevance of a 100.000 EUR watch or a million $$$ piece of jewelery?

This two colour style is very appealing. It adds a lot to the design IMO. The best 918 I've seen so far.

Is it only in combination with the Weissach Pack?

The car looks great in any color I would say.... it just looks so damn hot!

Wondering how many of the 918 cars are running for test reasons for Porsche.... probably the first 100 are all factory cars yes

Very true. You buy something you feel good about. Also you may buy something which makes you feel good about because others admire it. Like women and their expensive dresses, handbags, shoes, etc.. Smiley

I admire and have the highest respect and appreciation for wealthy people who not only buy stuff for being seen in/with it but who also love the stuff because they like driving/wearing it. These are usually those people who know a lot of details about the stuff they bought, not just the price tag.

Life can be short, so let's enjoy it (this is what my wife always says). I don't always agree, I like to plan for the future but sometimes I listen to her because in a second, life can be over.

Now don't you feel a little bit sorry for me...?

I always buy stuff that I feel good about... Unfortunately not only cars, but also dresses, shoes, handbags, watches, gadgets, furniture...  The worst thing is that I always seem to like expensive things, without even seeing a pricetag! cheeky

Value is relative because for these luxury items it is linked to emotions as written above.

I don't like to show off, but I like craftsmanship and like to share it with others. However I try not to share the price of an item...
